HTC announces Sensation XL, the Titan for Androids

HTC announced the 4.7-inch HTC Titan running on Windows Phone 7.5 Mango last month. Now they have the HTC Sensation XL which comes with a similar hardware but now running Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

The Sensation XL is also among the few handsets that is branded with Beats Audio, just like the Sensation XE.

With its ginormous 4.7-inch screen and 9.9mm thin body, the Sensation XL is one of the biggest handsets from HTC, along with the HTC Titan.

HTC Sensation XL specs:
4.7-inch S-LCD display @ 480×800 pixels
1.5GHz single-core Scorpion processor
Adreno 205 GPU, Qualcomm MSM8255 chipset
16 GB storage
768 MB RAM
up to 32GB via microSD
3G / HSDPA 14.4Mbps
WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, DLNA
Bluetooth 3.0 with A2DP
8MP autofocus camera with dual-LED flash
720p video recording
1.3MP front-facing camera
Li-Ion 1600mAh battery
Beats Audio
Beats headset
GPS with A-GPS support
HTC Sensation UI 3.5
Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread

It’s big in size and big in sound but not that really big in pixel density (199ppi). The Sensation XE has a better screen at 540 x 960 pixels even if it’s just 4.3″.

The lens on this one though is pretty decent, rated at f2.2 at 28mm. However, the 720p video recording isn’t inspiring, considering the previous Sensation variants were all capable of doing 1080p. That could be attributed to the older GPU & chipset that comes with this one (Adreno 205 GPU, Qualcomm MSM8255 chipset).

And because it will come with Beats Audio, expect it to be very expensive — somewhere north of Php35k, when it reaches the Philippines.

Update: I am told projected price for the XL is between Php30k to Php33k and is capable of running Windows Phone 7 and Android (though not dual-boot).

I had the htc touch diamond and I couldn’t wait to get rid of it. I will never own another htc phone again.

Maybe worth it if the beats audio sound card provides a much better audio experience compared to other devices.

Audio quality hasn’t really been given enough focus in the smart phone world. A big reason why audiophiles still carry a dedicated player to provide them their listening needs.

Just wondering though, is the beats audio a program or hardware add on? I’m talking about a sound card and not the headset.

Both the Sensation and Sensation XE phones have high resolution of 960 x 540, why would Sensation XL be just 800 x 480?

    • Avatar for ken ken says:

probably because it shares the same hardware as the titan which only supports the 800×480 resolution required by WP7

Perfect for those who are looking for smart phone that sits between a tablet device and the entry-level phones with 3.5 inch screens.

I doubt though it would easily and discreetly fit in your pocket.
