Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 quick hands-on

A few days ago, we were able to spend a few minutes with Nokia’s upcoming Windows Phone 8 smartphones during Microsoft PH’s launch of Windows 8. Check out our quick hands-on of the Nokia Lumia 920 and the Nokia Lumia 820.

Let’s start with the Lumia 820. Compared to the Lumia 920 and its predecessor, the Lumia 800, the Lumia 820 has a different form factor having a flat glass on top of its 4.3-inch (480 x 800, 217 ppi) display instead of a curved one. The rest of the body is covered with an interchangeable shell made of glossy plastic.

As far as build quality is concerned, the Lumia 820 feels solid and nice to hold but the design makes the device look bulky when in fact it is lighter and slightly thinner than the Lumia 920. Thanks to the 1.5 GHz dual-core Krait processor, Adreno 225 GPU, 1GB of RAM and enhancements brought by WP8, UI navigation is smooth and snappy.

Nokia Lumia 820 specs:
4.3″ AMOLED display with ClearBlack @ 480×800 pixels
Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 1.5GHz dual-core, Krait processor
Adreno 225 GPU
1GB RAM
8GB internal storage
microSD support
LTE
NFC
8MP rear camera, LED flash
1080p video recording
1650mAh Li-Ion battery
Windows Phone 8

Now for the Lumia 920, the flagship retained the curved form factor of its predecessor, the Lumia 900. Although bigger, the 920 managed to be a bit thinner than the 900. It’s polycarbonate unibody houses the 1.5 GHz dual-core Krait processor, Adreno 225 GPU and 1GB of RAM.

Despite having the same processor, GPU and RAM as the Lumia 820, the Lumia 920 has more edge in terms of display quality thanks to its 4.5-inch (768 x 1280, 332 ppi) PureMotion HD+ IPS display. Like its smaller brother, UI navigation on the Lumia 920 is also smooth and fast. However, at 185g, the Lumia 920 packs some weight. Even heavier than the Galaxy Note II (183g).

Nokia Lumia 920 specs:
4.5″ 720p display PureMotionHD+ @ 1280×768 pixels
Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 1.5GHz dual-core, Krait processor
Adreno 225 GPU
1GB RAM
32GB internal storage
LTE
NFC
8MP rear camera, LED flash
1080p video recording
2,000mAh Li-Ion battery
Windows Phone 8

To conclude our quick hands-on of the Lumias, we can say that both smartphones have left us with good impressions. As of the moment there are no details on local pricing and availability but we’ll surely update you once Nokia PH makes it official.

-Flat screen vs 2.5D Sculpted Glass
-Less durable screen (No Corning Gorilla Glass)

sa tingin ko kailangan pa improve ng nokia os nila para maibalik nila reputation nila kasi tulad ngayon very popular and iOs the andriod..

THEY SHOULD NOT GO WITH ANDROID. Windows OS is not that big but is growing. (Search for BUILD CONFERENCE 2012) What’s better in Windows is that they assure quality and not focus on the quantity of apps. Just wait for the OS’s rise to the top :)

I’m planning to buy lumia 800 but after viewing some video reviews and reading some articles about these 820 and 920, It changed my mind, I’ll wait for these.

Does anyone know the exact release date and the price of 820 and 920?

    • Avatar for ThisIsLumia ThisIsLumia says:

I asked a nokia lady earlier at SM Megamall and she said that it will be available by next year :( I hope not… it should come out earlier.

  4. Avatar for Reui Reui says:

it has no FM Transmitter AFAIK.

  5. Avatar for ARTPOP ARTPOP says:

May “FM Transmitter” feature ba to? I have a nokia n900 kasi at isa yon sa mga features na gusto ko. Kung meron, i think itatapon ko na sya (bulok kasi, may problem sa charging) and mag-uupgrade na ko to 920 kung meron. Kung wala, siguro magsasamsung na lang ako.

  7. Avatar for Dave Dave says:

If Windows Phone 8 only has Instagram, Temple Run and other popular iOS and Android apps I’d really switch to a Lumia 920

    • Avatar for boombuild boombuild says:

Just wait for it. Windows already held a conference of developers of around 2000 to go and make applications. It will be very easy too since it is native.

      Search BUILD CONFERENCE 2012 ;)

    • Avatar for ThisIsLumia ThisIsLumia says:

How come? We’re defending the phone because he said bad things about it. I respect personal reference as long as you don’t say negative things about others.

(My bashing of Android is for defense :D HAHA)

Based on early reviews it seems that Windows Phone 8 has NOT addressed the wifi disconnect issue! This is a big flaw!

I have a Lumia 710 and while I love the design and the app selection has improved, WP7 DISCONNECTS FROM WIFI WHEN YOU LOCK AND PUT THE PHONE ON SLEEP. And there’s NO option to keep wifi on.

So when you’re on wifi and lock the phone, it disconnects, thus you don’t get any alerts, kik/whatsapp/fb messenger/Line/Viber other IMs nor Skype/Tango calls.

Going on 3G and locking the phone keeps the cellular data on but for people who want to keep their cellular data usage low, using wifi (without disconnecting) should work.

    Disappointed.

    :(

    • Avatar for fireice2 fireice2 says:

Meron na app para hindi mawala wifi connection. Not the best solution, pero I hope this will be solved in future updates.

Windows Phone 8 is really designed to work in tandem with a Data Plan. This will work great with always-on plans no prepaid but will suck bigtime for post-paid users.

this app i use to keep my wifi connected

    • Avatar for Ronald Ronald says:

Thanks, ceegii63. The workaround app works. :) A real OS update that fixes this issue would be preferable though.

  12. Avatar for ceegii63 ceegii63 says:

confirmed today Lumia 920 has PENTABAND 3G/HSPA+ and may have multiple unlocked LTE bands

kaya naman pala pumayag NOKIA na exclusive sa ROGERS CA at ATT US for 6 months eh pwede naman pala ang Unlocked versions sa Tmo US at Wind CA

  13. Avatar for Request Request says:

Please do a comparison of the iPhone 5 camera and the ones on the 920. Thanks in advance!

    • Avatar for E E says:

any significant difference of win7 and win8?

    • Avatar for Request Request says:

Sir yuga has an article for the changes made in WP8. Well, inside, WP8 and WP7 has a different core. The cause of WP7 devices not being able to upgrade to WP8 is that Microsoft changed WP8’s core so that it has the same with Windows 8. However, you wouldn’t notice a huge difference in terms of the UI.

  15. Avatar for Bryan Bryan says:

If only they introduced 820 as Pureview, I would surely get one. I’m hesitating on 920 since it’s big. would be hard to move around inside our factory.

  16. Avatar for Adamex Adamex says:

I hope it’ll be available soon! I want to get my hands on the gray version! :D

  17. Avatar for mike mike says:

    Lumia 920:”8MP rear camera”
That’s no ordinary 8MP camera. That is a 8.7MP Pureview Camera with Optical Image Stabilization.

  18. Avatar for deuts deuts says:

Gusto ko na nyan! I want one!
