NVidia Tegra 4 Wayne details leaked

Chinese website, Chiphell, has recently revealed some of the details of NVidia’s upcoming System-on-Chip. The leak suggests that the Tegra 4 Wayne will have six times more GPU cores than the chip manufacturer’s current offering. If you do the math, that should equate to a groundbreaking 72-cores!

When used correctly, the Tegra 4’s 72-core GPU will be able to support devices with an eye-popping WQXGA (2560 x 1600) display with 120Hz refresh rate or displays with 4K resolution (4-times Full HD).

In addition to its mammoth GPU, this 28nm SoC will sport a fifth battery saving core just like its predecessor and USB 3.0 support right of the bat. Accompanying the processor is a DDR3L RAM and a high-performance imaging chip to aid the handset in producing high quality stills and clips.

We’re expecting NVidia to give us a sneak peek of their upcoming torch bearer in next year’s Consumer Electronic Show. We hope we can fly to Vegas for the said event to bring you guys the latest buzz in the tech industry and be up close and personal with the NVidia Tegra 4 Wayne.

Until NVidia learns to release its source to the dev community, it might be better to avoid NVidia based chipset. Look at Motorola Atrix – no more updates, LG Optimus 2x super slow/late update to ICS. In the case of the LG Optimus 2x, both LG and NVidia are guilty.

If it does not matter to you, timely updates, then I guess an NVidia chipset is ok. But if there is an issue that needs an update then you will be at the mercy of NVidia and the HW manufacturer (LG, etc.).

Will it be used in cellphones?
