Samsung i9100 Galaxy S II in the flesh!

Listen to article

What’s thinner, lighter and twice as powerful as the Galaxy S? Well, it’s the Galaxy S II (GT-i9100) of course and we’ve got one of them babies right here (though it’s still an engineering unit and not the final release).

Having owned the first Samsung Galaxy S, I was pretty excited how much improvements this second generation Galaxy S would look like and perform.

It’s definitely thinner, though not by much, despite having a larger 4.3-inch screen. It’s much snappier too, if I might add.

Samsung definitely made good effort in upgrading their Galaxy smarpthone. Just look at these specs.

Samsung i9100 Galaxy S II specs:
4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus @ 480×800 pixels
Gorilla Glass display
Dual-core 1.2GHz ARM Cortex-A9 proccessor
Mali-400MP GPU, Orion chipset
1GB RAM
16GB and 32GB internal storage
up to 32GB via microSD
HSDPA 21 Mbps, HSUPA 5.76 Mbps
Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, DLNA, WiFi Direct, WiFi hotspot
8MP autofocus camera w/ LED Flash
Stereo FM radio with RDS
GPS with aGPS support
Bluetooth 3.0 + HS
1080p video recording
2MP front-facing camera for video calls
Li-Ion 1650mAh battery
Android 2.3 Gingerbread

The Galaxy S 2 still has that little protrusion at the bottom end of the back panel, giving it a better grip when held with one hand. The back panel also has a textured finish and the camera is now paired with an LED flash, an important feature they forgot to add in the first generation.

The snapper now takes a full 1080p video with the 8MP camera. I was already impressed with the camera from the old Galaxy and they’ve still improved on that more.

The first Galaxy S was already thin at 9.9mm but this new one is even thinner at just 8.5mm. And despite the larger form factor, they managed to shave off several grams from the weight (down to 116g from 119g).

We’re still not sure when Samsung will officially release the Galaxy S II in the Philippines and for what price. Will post an update once we get word. Full review coming up later next week (Samsung PR warned me though that the unit is still an engineering model so there might be bugs here and there).

Hi! Do you have any forecast as to how much this phone would cost here in the Philippines? I am really interested to have this as my next phone. I used to be a big Sony Ericsson (I had Xperia X8 since November 2010) but I switched to Samsung just this month. Now, I have the Galaxy Ace and I am way happier with it as compared to X8.

I thought the Galaxy S was the best smartphone when it came out but still I wanted to wait for the second iteration. I think Samsung didn’t disappoint and a lot of you would agree that’s its worth the wait. This one will definitely enter my list of tech buys in 2011.

things are getting better and better… in the end the sweet thing about this never-ending competition are the end-users. we just need to wait for the right time to get the right phone that will suit to our needs… and what’s more… it might end up cheaper than we expect. :)

Even better to include in the review are the similarities and differences between the Tegra2/SCLCD and the Exynos/SAMOLED+ versions of the SGS2. :)

I’m thinking of selling my Galaxy S and buying this one when it comes out. :)

Definitely the one to look out for. Kaya lang this was delayed because of the speed bump from dual 1ghz to dual 1.2 ghz right? I think the delay was partly due to the rumors of the iphone5 being delayed as well. Sammy might be thinking of releasing this at the same time as iphone 5, but since the latter might be delayed, there is no need to rush the S II na rin.

My money goes on this being launched (here in the Philippines) at around July to August, if not even later.

” they managed to shave off several grams from the weight (down to 166g from 119g).”

Sir, parang mas bumigat sya based sa statement above? is it the other way around, down to 119g from 166g ?

Reply

Erin · 15 years ago

“Down to 116g from 119g” roughly translates to “bumaba sa 116g *mula sa* 119g”. Your suggestion doesnt make structural sense as you cannot use down to 119 if your starting point is 116.

just clarifying.

BA
Balbon · 15 years ago

Sa palagay ko 166g ang unang nailagay. Kaya nagtataka sya. Inedit na lang to 116g yung mismong post ni yuga.

I dont think so. Look at what hihey posted in his/her comment. Yuga also gives credit (at the very least in the discussion) for typo catches whenever he edits an article.

@syunga: yep, I think I have a reading comprehension problem and an impulsive comment syndrome. I like trolling as well. Thank you for pointing it out and balancing my non-constructive comment.
