Samsung trumps Motorola for 2nd spot in mobile phone market

A recent report from IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker places Samsung as the number 2 mobile phone manufacturer in Q2 of 2007. There are a total of about 272.7 million units worldwide for the said quarter with Samsung shipping 37.4 million units, beating Motorola which slipped down number 3 at 35.5 million.

Nokia on the other hand is still king of the mobile market, shipping 100.8 million units during the second quarter. That’s more than what Samsung, Motorola and Sony Ericsson (24.9 million) combined. LG Electronics places 5th in the roll with 19.1 million units. Motorola is slowly losing the battle with almost 31% drop in sales compared to the same quarter in 2006. Nokia, despite it’s dominance, hasn’t taken a good foothold in North America where Motorola’s RAZR have been selling like hotcakes in the past couple of years.

Motorola, Samsung, Nokia

Motorola hasn’t really been innovating lately. Since the RAZR, there hasn’t been any hot unit from the company.

My latest handset, the smartphone Samsung SGH i600, is my first non-Nokia unit since 1997. Been a Nokia fan myself for a decade. I never thought I’d be leaving Nokia for another brand but I did.

I’m still sentimental with my D&G RAZR which is still in good shape all these years, but ever since I got my iPhone 3GS (under O2 UK) i will never go back…caters to my every need! This coming from someone who used to be anti iPhone…

I’ve also read in a newspaper article regarding the F300 and other new phone models launch that they claim to be number 2 in the philippines. That’s funny, coz when I go to malls or ride jeepneys, all I see are Nokia and SE phones. I see the usual, K750, P990, K800, W810, N70, N73, 6600, in people’s hands, I rarely see a samsung phone and I’ve seen more RAZR and SLVR users than Samsung phones.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Sony Ericsson moves to 3rd place and Motorola drops to 4th place. Motorola can’t seem to do things right. They’re still stuck with mediocre 2 megapixel phones(they still don’t have a 3.2 megapixel phone), RAZR designs, and lame interface. Samsung’s phone designs are better but their user-interface(with the exception of S60-based samsung phones) is as lame as Motorola’s, you can’t even apply or install themes. IMO, SE still has the best-looking(flash menus and the new PSP-style XMB menu in W910, K850, and W960) and fast loading interface.

Never drooled for a motorolla phone, too.

I was a sonyericsson user for years and my last units were P910i and W800i. But when SE released P990i which I was drooling for months, I was forced to go back to Nokia for e61i because it has far better and stable features. The best phone that I have used so far.

Maybe SE can make me return to their camp with the release of either P1i or W960i

I never really fancied Motorolla phones to begin with. But you’re right, Motorolla has been stuck with the RAZR since it came out, I guess they thought that was the magic bullet for them.

Still, no more Nokia for me. I’m now a happy Sony Ericsson fanboy. Can’t wait for the K850 to come out. :D
