Starmobile Crystal, a 4.5″ qHD smartphone under Php8K

Listen to article

We’ve featured a few Starmobile handsets in the past and one of them is the flagship Astra which we reviewed last November. Now Starmobile follows up with a new flagship called the Crystal – a 4.5-inch dual-SIM dual-core qHD Android smartphone.

Starmobile Crystal

It’s hard to deny that the Starmobile Crystal’s design was inspired by the Samsung Galaxy S3. While some might see the Cyrstal as just some sort of an S3 knockoff, it’s good to know that this new flagship has a good build. Although made entirely of plastic, the Crystal is packed tight meaning there’s no sign of creakiness and feels solid in the hands. At 9.1mm thick and 148g of weight, it is also comfortable to hold and carries a decent amount of heft.

Starmobile boasts that the Crystal has a “stunning screen display” which is actually a 4.5-inch IPS display with a resolution of 540 x 960. This equates to a pixel density of 245ppi. Partner that with an IPS screen and you’ll get a display with an above average quality. Having owned smartphones with high-density displays, I can definitely say that the Crystal’s display looks good.

The Crystal also has an 8 megapixel BSI (backside illumination) rear camera with LED flash and a 2 megapixel front. Powering the device is a 1,700mAh battery and runs a stock Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box.

Check out the jelly case. I’m a bit confused.

The case is obviously for the BACK of the phone since the (top) cutouts seem to be for the camera lens and the LED flash, but how come there’s a huge square cutout in the middle? Is that there to show off the Starmobile logo? Or is it for the screen…. which is in FRONT?

Hmm… esep esep…

And your point is?

I didn’t think I’d need to spell it out, but my point was, it’s obviously a poorly designed/flawed case.

I actually agree, the included jelly case seems a bit pointless, but at least it protects the sides.

open rear cutout is for better heat dissipation.. The best advantage for jelly case. Cooler phone!

I almost choked when i saw the price, especially In the light of CM’s Blaze and now Omega’s price-feature. This should already have either JB, 1GB RAM, bigger screen to compete. Hahaha oh well good luch SM.

Problem is, better brands are coming in with similar specs at better prices like lenovo A800 at 6,990. Suddenly, 7,990 doesn’t sound so attractive anymore and I’m sure that’s just a start. Better specs such as 1g RAM’s should replace 512mb’s price point by the middle of the year. Local brands better prepare how to spar with these behemoths coming in.

1gb phones could be available as early as next month

The Crystal has a better camera (8MP BSI with LED flash) and display resolution (960×540 pixels) than the A800. It’s only reasonable that the Lenovo model is 1,000 cheaper.
