Apple loses patent lawsuit, could pay up to $862 million

Apple was recently found guilty in a patent lawsuit which could force the iPhone-maker to cough up $862 million in damages.

According to a report by Reuters, Apple was found guilty by a U.S. jury for using a chip technology owned by the University of Wisconsin-Madison without permission.

The chip technology, which improves processor efficiency, was patented by the university in 1998 and was used by Apple in its A7, A8 and A8X processors which are found in the iPhone 5S, 6 and 6 Plus, as well as some iPad models.

The Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) sued Apple in January 2014, four months after the announcement of the iPhone 5S. According to the recent ruling, Apple could be liable for up to $862.4 million in damages.

It’s not over for Apple though, as WARF has also filed a second lawsuit against Apple just last month, this time for the A9 and A9X which debuted along with the new iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, and iPad Pro.
