Congress pushing for Php50 M fine to slow ISPs

Members of Congress are looking into creating or amending existing laws to impose higher penalties to erring Internet Service Providers and telcos if they don’t provide the mandatory quality of service standards.

House Deputy Minority Leader and LPG-MA Rep. Arnel Ty stated that they are looking to impose fines of up to Php50 million if ISPs fail to provide the minimum expected service.

Currently, the NTC regulates telcos and ISP but the outdated law only mandates for Php200 per day if an ISP is found on-compliant.

Back in Pairl, Senator Bam Aquino initiated a Senate Inquiry of the slow state of internet in the Philippines. Last May, the hearing started off with different heads of government departments and telcos were summoned to shed light to the situation (see video here).

Yung Globe DSL Plan 999 dati 3MBPS. Ngayon, 1MBPS na lang. Obviously for marketing purposes para kunin yung PLAN 1299 3BPS o 5 MBPS for 1599.

Exactly, xdarkx, better to allow foreign telcos to operate in the country instead of more government regulation.

Freedom is truly an alien concept to many Filipinos, ariel.

Now if this will push through 50M is a big amount for telcos to swallow, biglang mapapaisip ang mga yan sa serbisyo nila sa publiko o mapapaisip sila kung paano at gumawa ng paraan para suhulan ang mga politko para di sila mahuli……at the end of the day …mas pipiliin nila ang maglagay o suholan ang mga politiko dahil kakarampot lang ang suhol kesa sa fine na 50 M o di ba? san ka pa….madali suhulan ang mga yetang politiko na yan…

Telco’s are much more corrupt than the Government itself! They will do everything to protect their “assets”. Spending Taxpayers money for a lousy 1Mbps internet speed is kinda overrated for them isn’t it? In theory, 10Mbps will only be achieved if those lawmakers would push that Nonexistent Anti-Trust bill which would level the playing field of company’s/corporation’s. “I’ve just played Russian Roulette & lost big time!”

    • Avatar for zarne zarne says:

The key is a working Anti Trust Bill which will open up market competition plus ‘strict’ enforcement of heavy fines for false or misleading advertisements from any Telco. Most of these companies have no moral and the Gov’t can not legislate morality.

ok na saken yung 10mbits/s na minimum internet speed

    • Avatar for fatfat fatfat says:

      10 mbits = 1 megabytes po

    • Avatar for hisairness hisairness says:

    • Avatar for facepalm facepalm says:

      8 Megabits = 1 Megabyte.
      8 Mb = 1 MB.
      8 Mbps = 1 MBPS.

Telcos prefer to use the smaller unit (bits) as it gives a Bigger number.

1 Mbps should be made minimum, like the Netherlands. (Although their internet download speeds NEVER reach the minimum nor go below it)

Style nyo bulok.

    • Avatar for zarne zarne says:

Creation of Internet Police?? Shame on corrupt politicians.

  11. Avatar for woo woo says:
