Sony announces PS3 Super Slim — a game changer?

Listen to article

The last four years have not been a walk in the park for Sony in terms of sales, especially in the LCD TV and gaming console department. In the hopes of steering things around for the PlayStation lineup, Sony has announced the PS3 Super Slim. But is this enough to turn the tides in their favor?

As its name implies, the Sony PS3 Super Slim (289.56 x 229.87 x 59.44mm) is the slimmer version of the PS3 Slim (289.56 x 289.56 x 64.77mm) from 2010. Besides touting a sexier body, the revamped PS3 will be released with 500GB and 12GB SSD versions (not available globally), which is the biggest and the smallest storage capacity in the PlayStation console’s history. The PS3 will also be available in 250GB model.

Of the three, the 250GB model of the PlayStation3 Super Slim will be the first to be made available for public consumption. This model will be sold starting the 25th of this month for $269.99 while the 12GB and 500GB versions will be retailed starting next month for $229.99 and $299.99 respectively.

having a smaller form factor *may* have affected power consumption, meaning lower power usage.

ISnt 8 MB the smallest storage capacity for Sony’s History? If you are talking about PS3’s History then I agree

And no

This is not a game changer at all. a price drop to $199 maybe

Sony is doing this because they are late for bringing new Game Console… a Gaming Console’s Life span is normally 5-6 years only. but Sony didn’t make a new one because they are regaining their loss with the Ps3…remeber the PS3’s first price? it’s 70,000 pesos… the development of the PS3 cost too much, so when they lessen the price…they loss so much, so this is their solution. just wait for Playstation Orbit.

I am happy with my current PS3 slim, if they bumped the graphics upgrade maybe then i can consider it. My desktop still offers great graphics compared to this.

I will just invest that price on a two GTX560 SLI mode upgrade.

Then wait for PS4 :)

It’s a game changer because it has a weak point you can hit for massive damage.

Sony Didn’t Drop the Price of the PS3 So As Not To Upset You

Prices on older models—a 160 GB version starts at $250 and a 320 GB sibling at $300—aren’t moving either. Sony’s explanation says that consumers don’t want a price change. Say what?

In an interview with Engadget, Sony exec John Koller cites that consumer feedback as the reason they’re holding fast on the MSRPs for the PS3:

“There’s no price drop formally, but the thing that’s been happening in the market over the last year or so is that there’s been so many retail price promotions, and so many different gift card offers and all those things, being done by all of us (Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony), that we’ve heard from our consumer, ‘Enough with all these weird price moves. What we really want is content and games and value.'”

wala ng maisip na innovation ang mga company ngayon. either pinapanipis na lang (ps3) or pinapahaba(Ip4)
