Fixing Feed Problems

Just got an email from a feed subscriber that my blog’s RSS feed isn’t working (thanks Bob!). I noticed that two days ago when my Firefox’s Live Bookmark feed failed to load but I thought it was nothing. It’s working with FeedDemon though.

I’m now looking into it. Feedburner’s FeedMedic is reporting the errors. I should be able to find the problem and fix it asap.

Update:

Ok, I can’t seem to find a fix for this one:

XML Parsing Error: not well-formed
Location: http://www.yugatech.com/blog/?feed=rss2
Line Number 196, Column 11: <tags> page
————————^

Anybody experienced the same problem?

Update 2:

OK fixed it. Two problems. One is mine and the other is inherent with WP.

1) In wp-rss2.php, there’s a line there which involves changing to . Note the capitalized SS letters.

2) There was a problem with the RSS feeds when you include the “<" and ">” chars. That was caused by my post titled “< tags > page”.

@ Andrew

Removed your first comment. Thanks for that tip! Took me a while to figure that out. :)

Adsense Heat Map for Blogs and Forums

Adsense Help Center has released a new heat map to blogtimize or optimize Adsense on your blog.

See sample heat map below:

Blogtimize

Remember that maximum number of Adsense ad blocks per page is 3 for content ads, 1 link ad unit, and 1 ad for search. Bear in mind that your blog’s layout will ultimately dictate how ads should be positioned.

For people running forums, here’s the suggested heat map:

Adsense for Forums

See explanation here. Forums are inherently harder to monetize with Adsense because users have already gone accustomed to the ads and eventually become ad-blind so it’s good to change ad placements once in a while.

Google could engage in Pre-Crime?

Of course, we first heard of the term “pre-crime” in the Tom Cruise movie “Minority Report” but is that really possible nowadays?

Well, Google might be doing just that.

It has almost happened before:

A North Carolina man was found guilty of murder in November in part because he Googled the words “neck,” “snap,” “break” and “hold” before his wife was killed. But those search terms were found on Robert Petrick’s computer, not obtained from Google directly.

Read more about: You Could Go To Jail For Googling Certain Keywords.

Just for some light reading. *hehehe*

AMD buys ATI for $5.4 Billion

In a press release yesterday, Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE: AMD) announced that it has agreed to buy graphics manufacturer ATI Technologies in a transaction valued at approximately $5.4 billion.

Under the terms of the transaction, AMD will acquire all of the outstanding common shares of ATI for a combination of $4.2 billion in cash and 57 million shares of AMD common stock, based on the number of shares of ATI common stock outstanding on July 21, 2006. All outstanding options and RSUs of ATI will be assumed. Based upon the closing price of AMD common stock on July 21, 2006 of $18.26 a share, the consideration for each outstanding share of ATI common stock would be $20.47, comprised of $16.40 of cash and 0.2229 shares of AMD common stock.

This development would practically allienate ATI’s rival company, nVidia. I think if AMD can afford to buy nVidia, it would have bought it instead of ATI. Maybe Intel would follow the same route and buy nVidia, and it has enough funds to do so.

Intel was quick to respond to this news by pulling off the ATI chipset license, reports Bit Tech. That was fast! That means nVidia will be exclusive to Intel and we won’t see any nVidia cards for AMD processros as early as next year.

How will this affect the buying market? I hope with much cheaper graphics cards.

Restoring an earlier Backup

It just happened. My WP database went kaput.

Actually, all other blogs on the server were running normal. Just my blog’s WP tables gone crazy.

What is weirder is that just the “wp_post” table was empty. All the rest are intact. Still don’t know what caused it but I’m restoring from today’s (1:30 am) backup.

A post and several comments might be missing. Apologies for that. If you can spare a little bit more time to re-post your comment, I’d appreciate it. :)

Update:

I prolly found the culprit. I installed WP-Cache plugin a long time ago and it broke somehow wiping out the “wp_post” table.

Technorati gets a facelift

A new version of Technorati was launched just a while ago. This should be the 3rd version of the popular blog search service:

Technorati

The new version now looks like more of a search than a blog portal. It’s now more usable and personalized. You’ll be greeted with the recent posts of your Technorati Favorites once you’re logged in.

A new feature has been introduced call Discover and it shows you the hot topics in the blogosphere for tech, sports, entertainment, business and life.

I don’t know why the new Technorati look feels like Digg.

There’s one thing that remained the same though:

Sorry

We couldn’t complete your search because we’re experiencing a high volume of requests right now. Please try again in a minute or two. We’re working hard to make our search results better. Thanks for your patience.

Paypal in the Philippines via Xoom

Updates: You can now have a Paypal Philippines account. Just sign up here. You can withdraw an amount not exceeding $500 per month to any debit, credit card or directly into your Philippine bank accounts. You will just need the bank codes and savings account number.

Maybe you’ve already heard of the plan and the efforts to make Paypal available in the Philippines.

Though I think we’re still far from getting that much coveted nod from eBay (owner of Paypal), I think it’s good to know that there IS a way to get paid by people who has Paypal. If you haven’t heard of it yet, spell X-o-o-m.

I know, it’s not the real deal, but it’s close enough. So how do you receive payments from Paypal users?

  • Sign up for a Xoom account.
  • Enter your personal bank account. See complete list of supported banks here.
  • Create a Payment Button by indicating an item name/number along with the list price and the shipping fee.
  • Paste the button on your website or a send the link to your client via email.
  • Client receives the “request for payment”, creates a Xoom account or logs in and processes the payment using his Paypal account, credit card or eCheck.
  • You get a confirmation email with the tracking number and receive the payment directly into your bank account in a matter of hours.

That’s it! Xoom payment limitation is from $25 to $2,500 per transaction. If you don’t have a bank account, you can opt to pick up the cash in the bank within minutes (list includes Equitable PCI Banks and Cebuana Lhuillier) or have it delivered into your doorstep. I was even able to get my remittance delivered at 9:00 in the evening before — good for people who are away during the day or at their offices working.

You can choose to receive the money in peso or dollar denominations. Is it expensive? Depends on what you’re comparing it to. If you send $50, there’s the $3.50 fee (7% transaction fee). If you send $1,000, the fee is just $8 (or 0.8% transaction fee). These fees apply if you want to receive in Philippine peso but it’s a little more if you opted for US dollars.

The catch? Their peso-dollar exchange rate ain’t that good. Today, it’s just US$ 1.00 = PHP 50.8687. Still if you factor that in, it’s still cheap.

Some guy contacted me the other day wanted to advertise on my site so I asked him for $45 for 3 month’s for a single link to his website. I sent him a payment request via Xoom and I had the money in just over 3 hours. See the tracking code for preview.

I know it’s not the real deal. We still ought to have our very own legit Paypal account somehow. But I’ve been using Xoom for 3 years and it works.

I think one way of convincing eBay to add the Philippines in it’s list of supported countries is by using 3rd-party services like Xoom. If eBay notices that there are tons of transactions going into the Philippines from people currently using Paypal, they may think that we’re not a high-risk country anymore.

Contributing for PC Mag Philippines

I’ve been asked by the guys at PC Magazine Philippines to write a couple of articles on problogging and blog monetization. I’ll be joining the ranks of fellow bloggers like Migs, William, Gary and Mike though I think they are regular contributors already.

Writing a 1200-word article seemed a bit harder than doing four 300-word blog posts, so I’m putting more time with this one to be more thorough. Haven’t finished yet but I’m halfway there.

If you (a Filipino problogger) want to be included in the write-up and it’s okay to quote how much your earn from your problogging gigs, drop me a line.

If you have an extra hundred bucks, do grab a copy of PC Mag Philippines on it’s August issue to read my article.

This is my first time, so be gentle. :)

From zero to $800 with Adsense in 4 months

Leo shared that his 4-month accumulated AdSense income has reached $800. He mentioned in the same comment thread 3 months ago that he got $17 after 23 days.

I’m not sure if all of it was from his OFWTips blog but that sure is a really good amount to reach considering he’s only into blogging in the last 4 months. He has several blogs actually, some of which are really good niches like Entrepinoys Atbp., OFW Business Tips and Entreprenuer Help.

His oldest blog is getting some decent traffic (400 uniques/1,600 pageviews on average) and is actually at 20 something at Pinoy Top Blogs.

The best case on blog monetization I had was with PTB which broke the $100 mark with Adsense on its 4th month, though there were direct ads on it as well.

My other groups blogs like the Urban Blog and the Travel Blog weren’t as lucky though.

Care to share? What’s your most successful blog so far?

Adsense Site Crawler Diagnostics

Google has just added a new section inside the Adsense Panel which is a tool to view detailed diagnostic information about the pages Google crawls to display relevant ads.

Basically, this utility will show you a list of pages where Google has problems crawling content and serving ad pages. It also indicates what might have caused the problems or the reasons these pages are blocked.

See sample screenshot below:

This is a really nice tool you can refer to whenever you see problematic pages or websites showing blank ads or PSAs.

There’s the Google Help Center as well to assist you in solving these problematic pages.

Professional Social Bookmarkers

Jason Calacanis stirred the blogosphere again a couple of days ago when he posted an ad about hiring top users of social bookmarking sites such as Newsvine, Delicious, Digg, Flickr, MySpace, and Reddit.

The job? Doing what they’ve always been doing on their spare time — tagging and submitting stories. The perks? A nifty $1,000 monthly payout for doing the same with Netscape (a base of 150 submissions per month).

I’d say good for him and nice one for the top bookmarkers who sign up with him. Forums looking for new members have been paying people to post, why not tag?

If you’re having fun doing these things for nothing, I guess you’d be more motivated it there was money involved. Just look at the bloggers around you — more often than not you’ll see them very active on blogs that are raking in the big bucks. The ones that were borne out of pure passion and pasttime can always wait the next day, when there’s enough time.

WeblogsINC has been paying great bloggers (including a couple of Filipinos) to blog for the network at $7 to $12 per post and so far business looks good.

It’s all about the business and Jason seems to be putting in the right bets in his previous ventures. It’s a win-win deal — Netscape gets more active and talented contributors and these people get paid for something they’ve been doing for free before.

I have to give it to him — he really knows how to stir things up. AOL’s lucky to have him in their wing.

How much drive space you got?

These days, drive space are almost dime a dozen. There was a time when retail prices where around Php1 per MB and a lot of storage manufacturers (Western Digital, Maxtor, Seagate, Fujitsu) are fighting teeth to teeth to deliver faster and higher capacity drives.

I have around a total of 360GB of storage space. (Make that 400GB if you add my 40GB iPod)

Back in 1999, I bought a 13GB 5400 rpm Seagate drive for about Php5,500. Now, I can get a Seagate 300GB Barracuda SATA at PC Express for Php500 more. That gives you 50MB per Philippine Peso (~50MB per dollar).

The 400GB and 500GB drives (7200 rpm with 8MB cache) are still a bit expensive. Villman sells them at Php13.5k and Php17.5k respectively.

That, despite the fact that Seagate has already merged with Maxtor last December.

Just wait ’til Flash drives become really cheap most laptops and PCs will have them instead of the slower EIDE/SATA drive.

Smart WiFi Chronicles on GMANews.tv

I just found out about this story on the website of GMA News (www.gmanews.tv) which talks about my comsumerist blog, Smart Wifi Chronicles.

There were actually two stories published on the same day (June 13, 2006) which linked to the blog:

- Irate Smart Bro subscribers vent angst in cyberspace

- Smart: Facilities upgrade causing internet service woes

The first story heavily quoted posts from people submitting complaints on the blog. (I manually review each one and oftentimes edit them before publishing, usually due to text speak)

What surprised me though was that one of the articles quoted a Smart Public Affairs Executive saying:

Sought for comment, Ramon Isberto, head of Smart public affairs, told GMANews.TV that they were unaware of the complaints posted on the internet.

“We will look into it,” said Isberto, concurrently spokesperson of Smart’s parent company, Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT).

That ain’t right. I know they already knew of that blog. Some of them even registered as a user in there. If my memory serves me right, that’s one of the reasons why they launched the Smart Bro Big Bro campaign.

So ok, short term memory loss?

TagsPage

TagsPage uses the same concept as the Million Dollar Page with tags instead of banners. Obviously, this idea is an attempt to capitalize on the marketing popularity of MDP, and with much luck could bring in enough dough as well.

What do you get from it? The tag (for the exclusive type) or the title (for the shared type) links directly to your website. This is great for your Search Engine Optimisation(SEO) and will improve your ranking with the search engines.

If the < tags > page makes it, you’re site will benefit not only with traffic but with some link juice as well.

There are three ways to get your tag on this site:

- exclusive (starting at $5/character) – if you want to get the highest exposure this is the type of tag for you. The font size, the color and the background color for these tags can be customized. Your tag will also be added on top of the following pages: free tags #3 (Page Rank 6), free tags #2 (PR6), free tags #1 (PR3)

- shared ($3/character) – your site will be listed along with other sites that use the same tag. This will bring you targeted traffic and will give you the edge over your competitors. You’ll be able to edit the title and the description for your site

- free, your site will appear on the free tags page #3. You won’t be able to customize your tag. Our visitors already filled free tags page #1 and #2 with 800 free tags each so we decided to start a third one.

Good if you’re just starting out with your blog and need some linking. We all love free links.

Update: When you order a tag they can use the coupon “tagspage” and they’ll get 50% discount on the price.

Dreamhost on the Top Technorati Searches

Connie woke me up this morning with a text saying her blog wasn’t loading properly. I quickly checked and it was fine from my end. She was still upset though as half of her blogs are still down.

Apparently, the ones hosted at Dreamhost have had no luck in the past 3 days. So I checked Technorati to see how far and wide the problem was. It was practically on the front page of Technorati:

Dreamhost

That’s #6, just below Zidane and Bush. Now we realize how much of the blogosphere relies on Dreamhost for their hosting needs.

For some reason, I have this tingling in my gut and I pray hope this doesn’t happen to us.

88% of 50 Billion emails a day are junk

The Times Online published an article that there will be enough IP address by 2009 thanks to implementation of the IPv6. The estimated number will increase to 340 undecillion, 282 decillion, 366 nonillion, 920 octillion, 938 septillion or 340,282,366,920,938,000,000, 000,000,000,000,000,000. Just too many zeros to count.

At the end of the article are some really interesting information:

  • 50 billion. The number of e-mails dispatched every day wordwide; in 2001 the traffic was less than 12 billion
  • 88 per cent of e-mails are junk including about 1 per cent which are virus-infected
  • 32. The average number of e-mail messages received per person per day. This is rising by 84 per cent each year
  • 440 million. The number of electronic mailboxes in use, including 170 million corporate ones, growing by 32 per cent per year
  • 1,035 million. The total number of mobile phone text messages sent each month in Britain
  • 37. The average number of texts a user sends per month compared with 21 in 2001 1 million the number of children aged under 10 in Britain — one in three — who own a phone

Where did I saw that stats where the average Filipino mobile user sends about 8 text messages per day (240 per month)?

More than half of Filipino Bloggers use BlogSpot

While Von is doing his series on Pinoy Top Blogs, I’d like to share some of the data that I’ve mined in there as well. One of the more interesting things I discovered is that Blogger (BlogSpot) is the most popular blog service used by Filipinos, accounting for more than 50% of the sample population.

Pinoy Blog Usage

What’s more interesting is that local blog service provider i.PH came in second at 6.75% although way below Google’s Blogger service.

This is followed by BlogDrive and Wordpess.com at 6.00% and 5.40% respectively. The rest are shown on the table above.

The survey is taken from the current database of members from Pinoy Top Blogs. Of the total registered accounts of just over 1,500 blogs, 533 of them were using free or hosted blog services. Several of the ones included in the list are not really blog services but free hosting services (e.g. fil.ph and dHost.info) with which you can install any blog scripts you want while Pod-o-matic is a free hosting for podcasts.

Blogger’s popularity (6.29%) may be attributed to the fact that it’s one of the oldest running services out there. Although LiveJournal is also a old as Blogger, it hasn’t gain as many users. I guess usage of LJ is waning in favor of the newer ones like WordPress.com and Friendster.

Pinoy Top Blogs 1st Anniversary

Today is the 1st year anniversary of the Pinoy Top Blogs Project. The very first post about it is here.

The site was originally hosted here as a subdomain until Andre of Enthropia donated the domains to me a few months later. The old site now hosts a blog directory called “Philippines Best of Blogs“.

Here are some of the entries that discussed about the project at that time:

This was also the time when Milky Soft sent in his first link bait (was I right Marc?).

Several server moves, a 2GB RAM upgrade and tons of emails from concerned people, we’ve managed to maintain this project up despite the $149 monthly cost.

To commemorate this day, The FIlipino Librarian is doing a series of posts analyzing profiles and demographics of the members of Pinoy Top Blogs:

Really good stuff, I must say. Thanks for the series, Von. The Ca t also had an updated version of her “Blogging Trends – Profiles of the Top Pinoy Bloggers“.

Will be posting some more data mined from the system and share them here as well.
