Guesting on ANC this Monday

Will be off to ABS-CBN for a guesting in Ricky Carandang’s show this Monday (July 10, 2006). Call time is 9:30AM.

Topic is on blogging but I would have appreciated if I had more specific details about it before I go answering questions on air.

Me and some friends are also watching Superman Returns on IMAX (SM Mall of Asia) at around 3AM before that so there’s no more good night’s sleep for me.

On a side note, I’m a little uncomfortable writing the about our guest profile. I’d usually point them to my About page but depending on what topic we’re discussing, it’s better to have it short and specific.

How to prevent defacements?

Several blogs on our lot was target of defacements earlier this morning. Two were Connie’s food blog, one of Chin Wong along with two others. It’s always a dreaded thought that one of your sites or even servers getting hacked by some punk from Russia (or where ever).

I first got notice of the series of defacements last night while updating of our blogs on that server. Only one page was defaced and that’s the readme.html of the stock WordPress installation file. It was obvious how it was done because the file has write permissions for basically anyone to tamper with (chmod+666). Deleting the file and checking permissions of other files and folders was the logical move to fix that. And I thought that was all of it.

Or so I thought. Early this morning, we got calls that there were other defacement on the same server — 4 more blogs running on WordPress and Expression Engine. I really thought the entire server was compromised so we had to spend the entire day checking practically hundreds of other sites on that same rig. Though we’re still not 100% sure exactly how all these happened at the same time but evidence of cross-site scripting and improper folder permissions were the primary reasons.

How to prevent this in the future:

  • Check your blog/sites for improper file/folder permissions. The plugins folder or the themes folder of your WordPress account is the more common entry-point.
  • Check registration access levels – leave them at Subscriber level if possible.
  • Always check for newer updates. EE had a vulnerability report posted last January so if you’re not aware of them, do regularly check your blogging software provider for updates, patches and other fixes.
  • Always have a local copy of your DB and your files. For WP, there’s a DB Backup plugin for this and always have your existing themes in your PC. Will be helpfull when the time comes.

I’m sure we’d get some heat from this but battling hackers, spammers, and phishers is no easy task and a continuous effort. We get literally dozens of brute force attacks everyday and all we can do is be alert as ever. Any provider saying they’re 100% hack-proof is only asking to be targetted by more attacks.

All we can do is learn from this incident, be more carefull and move on.

Superman Returns + IMAX Rocks?

Superman Returns on IMAX at SM Mall of Asia seems like a really good mix that people are willing to wait weeks just to see the 3D effect. All week-end slots from 9AM to 9PM are already fully booked until the 16th.

SM Mall of Asia

So, we’re scheduled on Sunday the 16th from midnight (12AM) to 3AM.

I guess with all the raves about the movie and what IMAX (short for Image Maximum) could do to your viewing experience, people are pretty curious about it.

But at Php350 a pop, methinks this craze will end the same day Superman leaves the big screen.

Busy Sked Ahead

One of the more common reactions I get when people learn that blogging can be a career is that it would be a boring thing to do. Boring in the sense that you work in your pajamas and your office is where you sleep or just too socially distant for interactions.

Well, that may be true. But there are other perks in the category of “priceless” one may not want to pass up. For JAngelo, it’s the convenience that he’s able to stay in with his kids and watch over them while working. Same is true with Connie for years now, esp, when her kids were home-schooled. Reminds me of my Microsoft (Great Plains) days when parents are allowed to bring in their kids to office and leave them play all day at the kid’s nursery/recreation room.

For me, nothing beats the guestings, talks, out of town invitations and the side-trips that come along with it. Thus, a potentially busy sked ahead.

First, there’s my TV guesting at ANC on Monday with Ricky Carandang. Another one after that with Manolo’s TV Blog Show. He’ll spill the beans when it’s time to do so. (Uy, congrats for the show, ha?)

Then, while I’m not over yet with the FNF workshop (another session on Thursday), we’ll be going to somewhere south of Luzon for a blogging talk sometime 2nd or 3rd of this month.

If all goes well, there might be another one down in Mindanao on August too. September should be the most exciting month as it’ll be my first time out of the country for a blog conference of sorts. I hope DOST has already lifted my 5-year-old no-departure ban.

Since a number of bloggers have been suggesting this to me for quite some time now, we should organize our own Philippine BloggerCon this November or December. How does that sound capping off 2006?

Blogging from the FNF Seminar

Just finished my talk on blogging basics, talked to Manolo for a while about guesting on his TV show which will be aired next week, then a sumptuous buffet at a Chinese restaurant nearby.

Compared to my last talk on the same topic back in March, this one was a breeze since we used WordPress.com instead of Blogger — less or almost no HTML tweaking, IMO.

What’s more interesting are the topics we discussed about the tone, niche and overall direction of a newly created blog. While seasoned bloggers already know what they want to do before they launched their nth blog, the newer ones tend to have their focus scattered everywhere.

I always make a point that it’s okay to be personal at the start, find your voice, pick up from the experiences as you go along until you find a niche you are passionate and comfortable with, then stick to it.

Another topic I briefly discussed was about breaking blogging barriers. The Philippine Blogosphere is still small and very young which is why seminars like this one (sponsored by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation) is a good way to increase the number (exponentially) of voices out there and help spread the use of blogging as an alternative media.

The blogging barriers is more social than personal. As one of the attendees of the seminar (JotThings) says, “we could actually start having blog breaks instead of yosi breaks”.

What’s your oldest registered domain?

A link from Digg reported that the oldest registered domain, Symbolics.com, is still up and running. The domain was registered as early as March 15, 1985 — more than 21 years ago!

I got my first registered domain back in 1999 for yugatech.com which was offered for free by NameZero. Domain registration then was still $35 per year and free domain services like NameZero and NameDemo used advertising in a frame to offset the cost of the free domains.

Took me until October 7, 2002 to finally re-register yugatech.com along with pinoyblog.com thru my friend who runs MobileHive. We had another domain (blueleafmedia.net) registered July of 2000 for our group but forgot all about it.

Those were good times to remember by.

So, what’s your oldest registered domain?

Forum Monetization & PEx’s Business Model

PinoyExchange (PEx) is probably one, if not the oldest, of the commercial sites in the Philippine cyberspace that breezed thru the dotcom boom and survived the bust. With memberships of 171,729 and 15,258,823 posts since July 1999, PEx could very well be the second biggest site in the country in terms of traffic next to Inq7.net.

There’s no available public stats for PEx but a quick check with Alexaholic showed it’s neck-in-neck with PhilStar for the second spot.

Alexaholic

Still, despite the relative success in the online business, PinoyExchange is still under the red and funds are always short (mainly from advertising and co-branding). The site is currently suffering from slowdowns/overload and the admins admit they could not upgrade the servers because there’s no available funds for it.

I’m not sure how many servers they have but I reckon it could be around 2 or 3 costing as much as Php50,000 in monthly hosting cost. That’s on top of the cost of operation and salaries of the admins, sales and marketing people. So you’re looking at a conservative estimate of Php 300,000 monthly burn rate.

They’ve already scrapped AdSense altogether so I guess they’re not earning enough from the real estate it used to occupy. What’s getting a lot of heat right now are the huge ads that came along with the Server Busy page (makes people think they’re doing it to pad ad impressions). Another option they will be trying is “interstitial ads” which is similar to what you get in YahooGroups (much like an 8-second pause for an ad when you flip pages).

Active users are now suggesting that maybe the subscription model alongside the advertising model would help ease the cash-strapped forum/community. They used to have PEx Plus+ which is an annual subscription for premium members a few years back but they discontinued it. I think it’s time to revisit that idea. With over 170,000 registered members (ok, there’s a lot of multiple and dead accounts in there), even if only 2% of that are premium subscribers paying Php50 a month, that’s already Php170,000 — more than enough to quadruple (4x) their server capacity with some spare change for a good Web 2.0-ey redesign.

Of course, the rest of the 98% of the members will still have the free and basic services they get from PEx, maybe with the search function enabled as well.

Performancing BlogRank

I almost forgot about Performancing Metrics when it didn’t worked with my blog just after it was released. The detailed stats I got from MeasureMap is enough but since I can only have one account there, I decided to go back to Performancing for the other blogs.

Then I discovered that Performancing is also doing a ranking for all users running their metrics — BlogRank.

Although not all sites on the Top 100 BlogRank are actually blogs, ehre are some of the existing ones of note:

Using the BlogRank Widgets, you’re also able to see where your blog ranks beyond the Top 100.

Post FAds Review

My latest review on PTB (Friendster Ads Declassified) was about the trial ad I did two weeks ago on FAds (Friendster Ads).

The most important feature that was lacking in the ad reporting was the click-through rate. Since FAds was basically just a CPM model, which btw one can also get using AdWords on Friendster (remember Site Targetting?).

So I went to Friendster and clicked on the AdSense’ “Advertise on this site” link. I logged in to my Googe AdWords account and breezed thru the wizard. Guess what, the minimum CPM rate is just $0.25. That means, I pay $0.25 for every 1,000 ad impressions or 4,000 per $1.00.

Had the Php1,000 ePin budget given to me was used with Adwords, I could have gotten roughly 75,500 ad impressions as opposed to the 30,000 eyeballs with FAds. Huge difference there. The ads would also have been bigger and all the text clickable directly to my own landing page and I get to know my CTR as well.

This only means that potential advertisers on Friendster will be better off using AdWords than FAds, not only value-wise but feature-wise as well.

So, I fired off a similar ad on Friendster via AdWords, set my budget at $1.00 per day and let’s see how it’ll fare.

Practically Pay Per Post

pay per postHere’s a new company which is practically paying bloggers on a per post basis – PayPerPost.com. Bloggers get as much as $10 per post they publish on their blogs. All they need to do is login to their campaign, check the opportunities and post an entry about them along with the requirements.

The requirements include one or a combination of the ff:

  • 50 words minimum
  • requires a link
  • requires a photo
  • and a tone

The real giveaway here is the tone requirement. Advertisers may require bloggers to post a positive tone about the product or service. The posts are then reviewed if they meet the requirements before bloggers are credited with the payout.

Bloggers are then paid via Paypal. Bloggers have the option to disclose such arrangements in their blog.

What’s really funny is that the PayPerPost.com website leverages on an article written about them by the Business Week (Polluting The Blogosphere) although the article’s tone wasn’t positive at all.

Performancing Partners Ad Network

Performancing is launching an Ad Network specifically for bloggers. Dubbed Performancing Partners, the main goal of the ad network is to open the floor for bloggers to generate more passive income on top of direct income from their blogs.

The ads will be non-contextual so you can run them alongside your Google AdSense or YPN ads. Two revenue models are being put in place — Direct advertising on a monthly flat fee basis based on recommended CPM for category type, and CPA (cost per aquisition).

Success of such a niche ad network will highly depend on the people behind it and how they can attract advertisers already scattered amongst dozens and dozens of exiting competitors — AdBrite, BlogAds, Chitika, AzoogleAds, etc.

Maybe a higher publisher revenu share? The standard right now is about 50-50%. What I’m more interested is how this new network will be able to help monetize blogs that are only getting less than 500 uniques per day.

This is one ad network to watch out though and we’ll see once they roll it out soon.

How not to send a Business Proposal

I’ve been doing online business for years now, getting business proposals and job offers from people/companies halfway across the world since 2000. It’s nothing new to me now so whenever I get emails from people who say they’re coming over from the US to talk to me about a certain arrangement, I approach the situation with a certain level of sincereness but with minimal expectations.

Anyway, I got this email the other day and the person did not introduce himself completely (no last name) and even avoided mentioning his company. He tells me that he knows we are a web hosting company here in the Philippines and he would like to directly hire a bunch of sales and support people which we will manage for him. He followed up with a couple more questions about me and my company’s background.

I would have answered his email thoroughly but there were red flags all over the email which made me think this could be shady backgrounds:

  • No complete information about the sender, just the first name.
  • No clear information about the company (no company name, no website url)
  • Uses free email service instead of official company email.
  • Email was adress back to the sender and not actual recipients (used blind carbon copy, BCC)

Clearly, the person who sent this did not do any background checks except for the email address posted on our website.

I did a background check on him using his email address and only found one old website containing a similar email composition address to an Indian company where he’s looking for ASP developers and another one on a freelance/job site where he posted an ad but did not follow-up on requests for more info.

In doing business online, the very first thing one should take into account is transaparency in order to build trust between two parties. Not being upfront about such basic details as company information only solicits suspicion and distrust.

Google Checkout is no Paypal-killer

Google Checkout came out yesterday and though I had a blog entry for it in draft, I’ve revised it and changed it to this one.

Checkout is practically just another payment gateway for merchants and shoppers, and has been predicted to be the next Paypal-killer. Um, maybe if you live in any of the 50 states (and 1 district) of the US.

google checkout

Google Checkout is tied up with your Google Accounts so all you need to do is login and then fill out the credit card information page. But wait, look up at the screenshot and you will see that the CC info needed needs to have a US billing address.

That spoils every bit of excitement I had about the new service. Still, even if you have one, it doesn’t have that person-to-person Paypal transfer feature either.

Oh, well.

P.S.
A response from a Google rep posted on Digg stated :

At this time, only merchants with a United States address and bank account can integrate and process transactions through Google Checkout. You also must have a United States billing and shipping address to buy with Google Checkout.

We look forward to making the service more widely available in the near future.

I hope that future is near.

You can use MSN’s adCenter technology to predict a customer’s age, gender, and other demographic information according to his or her online behavior—that is, from search queries and webpage views.

Here’s on I got for this blog:

MSN Adcenter

That’s 51% male and 49% female with average age range of about 25 – 34 years old. Interesting predictions, eh. Hi to all yah ladies out there! ;)

I did another one for PTB:

ptb-adcenter.gif

PTB, on the other hand, is heavy with male readers (62% vs. 32% female) but wiht a much lower age range of 18 to 24. That’s strange. *hehehe*

What you basically do is layout your form, label them, add properties with options to require field inputs and then you’re done. It will generate a code (in iframe) which you can copy and paste into your webpage.

Bong Austero is 2nd Filipino blogger-turned-columnist

Most of the people out there who are closely watching the Philippine political blogosphere will probably know who Bong Austero is.

For those who don’t know him yet, he was the blogger who published the “Open Letter To Our Leaders” last February 27, 2006 which became so popular it might have been passed from one email to another thosands of times over (I got one but didn’t read all of it). It was eventually used by opposition groups and published on major newspapers. Mr. Austero even got a TV interview on The Big Picture (ANC) with Ricky Carandang.

That 60 minutes of limelight has made the previously unknown Bong Austero from a mere blogger to a columnist at the Manila Standard Today (officially starting June 19):

Starting today, and every Monday and Wednesday thereafter, my byline will appear in the opinion pages of the Manila Standard Today. My maiden column is about something close to my heart as a Human Resource Management practitioner: wages.

Although it was that letter that gave me my 10 minutes of notoriety, it was this blog that caught media’s attention. Yup, bloggers out there, it looks like mainstream media is indeed keeping a keen eye on the blogosphere. Manila Standard Today has another blogger on its roster of columnists, Sassy Lawyer.

I know that there are bloggers out there who will see this move as a form of selling out. I don’t.
