How to be noticed and get TLA ads?

In our meet-up last Saturday, Markku and I discussed about how to be noticed and get ads from TLA.

First, when advertisers will look for an appropriate site on TLA to put ads, they’ll do a search or browse on the categories. Due to the huge volume of TLA affiliates, you’re listing might not be easy to spot.

Once in a while, you might notice some referrals from the TLA website. This is good since it means potential advertisers are checking your site. But before they could check your site/blog, it needs to show up in their search. This is where you need to optimize your listing.

Login to your TLA account and go to the Publisher Program panel, click on the “Edit your listings” link and select which site/blog you want to optimize.

There’s a new section there that’s been recently added by TLA — Keywords listing. Add as many relevant keywords on that form that might describe your blog. One best way to go about this is use your blog categories as your cheat sheet.

TLA has it’s own listing categories so you could copy them as well.

Getting noticed (or showing up in the search listing) is just the first step. The harder part is getting the ads.

We’ll discuss mroe about that later.

Anybody still watching Digital Tour?

I remember about 2 or 3 years ago, one of my favorite local shows to watch was Digital Tour on Studio 23. They’re practically the only other TV show that’s pretty heavy on the tech side. There’s also Convergence on Net 25 and this Wikipedia entry says they’re consistently No. 1 on that category. (I wish they’d do reruns of TechTV.)

Anyway, both of these shows aren’t really showing anything new these days. Bunch of really old stuff and more old news. It’s like a three-month old delayed telecast or something.

Well, I guess, their average viewer isn’t as updated but to me, the show has become too boring nowadays. Hope they could do at least a segment or two that aren’t oh so too cheesy.

P.S.
Wait, now I remember. They did a feature of PinoyTechBlog September last year. :D

Relaunching PinoyBlog v3 Beta

Been hacking away for about a week now with the migration of PinoyBlog from EE to WordPress. It’s not a 100% complete based on my original expectations, feature-wise, but I thought I’d launch it this early and add the nitty-gritty details along the way.

PinoyBlog

So, I’ll just have it online and ask people to update their profiles and test out the new site for bugs. I hope I could get away with the beta label. ;)

Consolidate all your email accounts in Gmail

Or what I would have titled as “One Gmail to rule them all!

Anyway, this tutorial was meant for someone who asked about it but I thought I’d post it here as well for future reference.

This simple tutorial will enable you to use your GMail account as your catch-all inbox for all your other email accounts. The idea is simple — be able to receive all messages form all other email accounts into your GMail and then send emails or reply to emails from the originating recipient.

Here’s how you do it. (Note: This tutorial assumes that you other email accounts are on cPanel or have a Forwarding Option)

Setting Up Email Forwarding

This step will show you how to setup the forwarding option for your other email accounts. It assumes you’re running on cPanel/WebMail. If you have a different platform, it should still be almost similar to this.

1.) Login to your WebMail. You will directed to a landing page just like below. Look for the “Forwarding Options” link.

2.) You will then be prompted with a form asking for the address you want to forward your emails. Type in your GMail account. Click Add Forwarder.

3.) You will get a message that the Forwarding has been successfully completed. We’re done with this stage.

OK, let’s move on. Login to your GMail account.

Setting Up Email Accounts in GMail

The following steps will show you how to activate email accounts in Gmail. We’re assuming you already have GMail; if not, get one here.

4.) Inside GMail, go to Settings -> Accounts -> click on “Add another email address”. See screenshot below:

5.) A pop-up window will appear, asking you what email address you want to add. Type-in the desired account name and email address you used above (in step 1). Click Next.

6.) A new page will ask you to Cancel, Go Back to the previous page or Send Verification. Click on Send Verification.

7.) The verification email will be sent to your other email account. Since, it was set to forward all messages to your Gmail, just go back and check your Gmail Inbox for it. Follow instructions by clicking on the link provided. You’re all set and ready to go.

8.) To send email with the new account, just click on Compose and on the composer panel’s “From:” field, you’ll see a drop down allowing you to select which account you are using to send.

9.) By default, all outgoing mails will be sent/replied-to by your Gmail account as the Sender. You can change this so that the originating recipient is the one replying to the email. Change this in the Settings -> Accounts page as shown below:

Take note that your signature will always appear at the footer of all composed emails no matter which email accounts your use. The Inbox of the forwarding emails will still have a copy of the messages but you may want to check in and empty them once in a while to save inbox space.

Likewise, you won’t get any forwarded emails if the other email accounts are down, though you can still send emails thru GMail.

Disclaimer: I do not guarantee that this method will work on all types of email accounts.

Google’s new Content Referral Network

Google is currently testing it’s CPA campaign called Content Referral Network. CPA means cost-per-action and differs from the regular AdSense CPC method because CPA requires that a visitor clicks AND performs an action — like filling up a form, buying a product or service.

A copy of the Google invitation to the network can be found here: Google Launches ValueClick Killer.

Of course, a whole lineup of existing companies will become direct competitors of the Content Referral Network which includes ValueClick, Commission Junction and Direct Track, among others.

What will this mean for site owners, webmaster and bloggers? Well, it’s another campaign everyone can try and it promises higher returns, IF you can get your visitors to buy the advertised product/service. It will be hard to do that if a majority of your audience don’t have credit cards. In a way, you’ll need to have a site where users/members are pre-disposed to buying something. This could probably be good for forums about cellphones, accessories, gadgets, and stuff.

Will it work? Maybe for a few publishers and internet marketers. Not as successful as Adsense though. It’s easy to get people to click on an ad but not as easy to get them to do something else after that, much more to make them fish out their credit cards.

Advertising your Blog

Darren Rowse asks “Do you advertise your blog?“.

Why of course, everyone does. Its just a matter of up to what extent people advertise their blogs. Most people want free advertisements so they sign up with blog rings, blog forums, traffic exchange programs. Others are a little subtle but they’re pretty effective with leaving trackbacks and comments on other blogs within their niche.

The better question would be, how much are you willing to spend to advertise your blog? Some people spend some money on running contests or sponsoring one. Others do direct advertising. A lot of us around here do that.

I once got $30 in free AdWords (last year) account so I used it to advertise my blog. JAngelo used to run AdWords and I often see his ads on Inq7.net as well as Marc during the first few days of the V7N.com contest. Same with Rickey for his Live @ USA podcast; used to see his ads around here for entries related to “pinoy/filipino”. I’ve also seen BryanBoy buying BlogAds over at XiaXue‘s blog and another Gawker Media blog (forgot which one). And those are ad spots in the hundreds of dollars.

More interesting to know though is how effective these ads are for their blog. If they earn more than enough from their own blog, I think it is wise to invest some of the revenues back to advertising and increase traffic.

Level-Up! gives in to underground Mafia

Just read this news from Inq7.net about “Level-Up! surrenders to underground economy”.

Almost all online virual games such as World of Warcraft (WoW), Ragnarok Online and Second Life suffer from such massive violations. Blizzard responds by banning tens of thousands of accounts caught cheating the system. Level-up! gave in to the mafia and reasons out that:

…online game community has become so organic and so diverse that it would be hard to control people from going beyond the bounds of game rules. It’s not cheating anymore because everyone is doing it already and it’s becoming beneficial for everyone.

This is according to Level-Up! Chief Operating Officer Sheila Paul. Nice one! *hehehe*

What she may have meant there was since everyone is doing it and cashing in on the system, why exert more effort to curb it and spend money when they could join the crowd and possibly increase sales. *heh*

The State of Philippine ISPs

My recent entry at PTB talks about “MyDestiny and the quality of local ISPs“.

While we’re enjoying the fruits of competition in the broadband internet industry by way of lower rates and higher bandwidth, we usually suffer from service lock-ups and really crappy customer service.

They say, we get what we pay for. Does that mean, that my Php1,995 monthly bill for PLDT myDSL (786kbps) isn’t the “ideal” rate and what these ISPs do is undercut services in terms of uptime, annual lockups, and understaffing which causes poor technical support by undertrained staff?

Is the technology not that mature enough, international bandwidth costs a bundle or this is purely greed? I hope not (for the latter).

Flocking Flock more often

I’m finding myself using Flock more often alognside Firefox. Sometimes, I just feel that Firefox is too bloated and have been crashing more often. (Not that Flock is crashing almost as often.)

I guess the difference here is that I’ve got about a dozen or so extensions install on Firefox. The Session Manager seems to be the culprit. Viewing PDFs could most likely freeze the browser as well.

Anyway, Flock Beta 1 was just released and Paul Stamatiu did a comprehensive review of the latest release here.

Their site was also revamped headed by Barry Bell and Filipino-American designer Bryan Veloso. Bryan shares the full the story here.

This after a fresh funding of around $10 Million according to TechCrunch.

What makes the Pro in ProBlogger?

More emails are coming in from people asking about opportunities of making money from their blog or on doing part-time problogging gigs (courtesy of Ms. Susan Ople’s write-up in Panorama and David Llorito on Business Mirror). What I do is come up with a draft email with pertinent links to several entries on my blog along with Powerpoint presentations I did last April. I then use this draft to reply to them emails.

One question that got me a little un-easy was about the prefix “pro” in problogging. The question was “Can I just be a regular blogger and earn money from it and not be called a problogger?”

So I told him about a story of an old friend and dorm-mate back in college, Jake Versoza.

Right after college in Ateneo (MIS grad), Jake worked in a semicon company for a while but soon gotten a little tired of it. His passion was in photography and was doing it for fun during week-ends and vacations. He hooked up with groups and organization along those lines and tagged along with other professional photographers in the field, contributing to local mags for free.

When Ateneo won the championships in the UAAP that year, Jake got a lot of attention for his shots of the Ateneo-La Salle game. That same year, he got bookings left and right. What was a hobby at first became a part-time gig and he was earning huge that this hobby was earning him more than his regular day job. So he decided to go and become a full time photographer. On his first year alone, he earned around a million pesos. Now, you’ll see Jake’s work in almost every magazine and billboards across the country.

Ok, going back to problogging.

Along those lines, I did an analogy that whatever hobby or past-time that you do can become a fulltime career that could earn you your living. The same is true with blogging. If you “just happen” to have a blog and people advertise on it and you earn from it along with programs such as AdSense or YPN, you can become a problogger if you live off from it.

We have heard of professional video gamers (progamers) and professional photographers having success and living off from what was just a hobby and a passion. Why would blogging be any different? It’s just something new to the ear but it does not mean it’s a really peculiar job.

So, my answer to the question: Yes you can just be a blogger and happen to earn on the side. That means you can drop all your ads one day and still live a normal life and be able to pay all the bills on time. Probloggers do concern themselves with traffic, with ads and with advertisers because in a sense they are like any other web 1.0 micro-pubs (e.g. ClicktheCity, LocalVibe, GetAsia).

P.S.
I did an interview with him back in 2001 just before he broke the professional photography scene.

Will there be less hate on M$ once Bill retires?

PCWorld ran a story last Thursday about Microsoft Chairman and Chief Software Architect, Bill Gates, planning to retire by 2008.

Gates said he is leaving gradually in order to smooth the transition of his duties to the two men who will assume them–chief technical officers Ray Ozzie and Craig Mundie, who have been named chief software architect and chief research and strategy officer, respectively, effective immediately.

Gates emphasized that he has no plans to ever give up his position as chairman of Microsoft’s board of directors. “I don’t see a time in the future when I won’t be chairman of this company,” he said. “I see myself as always being the largest shareholder in Microsoft. Steve is the second largest, and I think we both take a lot of pride in that.”

So it seems that he’s just handing over a critical role in Microsoft operations (Chief Software Architect) but since he still owns majority of the company, he’ll remain as Chairman of the Board.

Much of what Microsoft achieved is due to Bill Gates and at the same time his name has become almost synonymous to monopoly and corporate bullying. With Bill leaving the Redmond premises make the face of the company a little less monolithic? Will there be less hate towards him and eventually to the corporate giant? Maybe. Or it could be worse.

Reminds me of this funny video at Youtube:

The guy who invented Ctrl+Alt+Del, David Bradley of IBM, jokingly recounts how he came up with the idea but gave credits to Bill for making it popular. *heh*

Logitech’s MX1000 Laser Mouse: OK for Gaming

For the past couple of weeks of playing Warcraft’s DOTA AllStars, I’ve used several mice I’ve had from Logitech. The LX7 Cordless Optical mouse which I bought last January is no good for gaming due to the obvious lag in response time. The older Marble Mouse is actually better and I’ve been quite accustomed to using a trackball now especially in gaming (not for a prolonged period of time though).

MX Laser Mouse

So I thought the one that I recently got (Logitech MX1000 Laser Cordless Mouse) won’t be any different with the rest of the older versions. Surprisingly, the game went very smoothly and the response time was no different that using a regular USB mouse (I’ve had the MX500 before as well).

Logitech Mouse

There’s a comprehensive review of the MX1000 over at DVHardware. I hope this one doesn’t die out on me too soon. My old MX500 went berserk after 18 months.

Un-wiring “The Pad”

For over a year now, I’ve been using my old trusty D-Link router (D-Link DI-704P Cable/DSL Router) in my apartment to network my two PCs. But when I got my laptop a few months back, the wiring became a little cluttered because I need to carry along with me some 20 feet of cables (at the couch in front of the TV, at the dining table and in my bedroom). My brother even tripped on it twice and thank God my laptop wasn’t hurt so bad though I thought that time will come someday.

The logical step was to get a wireless router and thanks to the free Amazon GC’s, I now have that Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router everyone is talking about.

Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router

Unfortunately, the power adaptor that came with it was only for 110V. I thought the ones they were selling in there have auto-voltage for 110/220V power outlets. The old adaptor from the D-Link was compatible with it so I used that one.

The only other problem is that my cordless phone downstairs is interferring with the wifi signal everytime it rings (same frequency?). I think there’s some settings I need to change to avoid that but I’m a little clueless.

Anyway, if you happen to pass by Bangkal, just look for the wifi router named “YugaTech.com” (advertising the blog huh?) and maybe I could share the password. :)

AOL’s new Netscape is a Digg-killer?

The beta version of the new Netscape portal really looks like another Digg-clone. Techcrunch calls it “the massive digg-killer” noting that Netscape serves a whopping 811 million monthly page views – far more than Digg today. With that amount of existing traffic, Jason Calacanis (the head huncho for WeblogsINC and Netscape), is pretty excited that they could build something great with the so-called meta-journalism (or social journalism).

The main difference between the new Netscape and Digg is that the latter is 100% pure user-driven while Calacanis’ new one will have editors or moderators. This means that the news that gets on top of the frontpage are then followed-up by the paid meta-journalists by way of verification, interviews and further research. Basically, the users themselves will be the ones nominating which stories should be covered more.

Digg CEO Jay Adelson responds to Netscape challenge:

Finally, we are very proud of the fact that there have been thousands of clones of digg. Keep them coming! (Time Warner is the first billion dollar company to do it, but bring it on. Surprised they went for the look and feel too, though.)

Oh wait, any new social news and bookmarking site now becomes a clone of Digg? Besides, was Digg ever an original idea? Digg was just a mix and match of the best features of del.icio.us and Slashdot. At least at Netscape, any attack/criticism on their site still gets the frontpage. Last time I heard, any submissions to Digg that’s anti-Digg are buried to oblivion.

I like Digg, don’t get me wrong, but if the owners talk as if their ideas are original and any other group or individual trying to improve it by either cloning or innovating on the idea are just a mess isn’t a nice way to welcome a new player.

A ProBlogger’s Father’s Day Interview on the Insider

J Angelo left me a note that he was interviewed by ABS-CBN’s Insider for a Father’s Day special. The interview will be aired tonight at around 10PM so go check it out.

My correspondent texted back, and she turned out to be Ms. Monique Lachica, a news desk editor for one of the country’s largest networks, ABS-CBN. They were looking for someone to interview for a fathers’ day special, and stumbled upon my blog. They thought I would be the ideal one, due to my, umm, alternative lifestyle/set-up.

Looks like the people at ABS CBN are busy scouring the web (especially blogs) for some leads and fresh topics.

SEO: Art or Exact Science?

There’s an ongoing debate at the SEO Philippines Yahoogroups about what makes a deserving Isulong SEOPH Contest winner.

Point #1: Contestants should not rely on blogs as an out-of-the-box solution. Make an effort to beautify your website entry. Isn’t the Philippine Web Awards doing that for the last 8 years?

Point #2: Do contestants need to be “clean” (read: white hat) in their strategy for Isulong SEOPH? If we were to promote SEO in the Philippines, is it okay if we award it to someone who stuffed his website with nothing but 1,000 isulong seoph keyword and another thousand in comment spams/trackbacks?

Point #3: What can we possibly learn from this exercise? What if the winner employed some gargantuan spammin’ and jammin? Are we telling everyone that it’s okay to spam and jam to get to the top?

Point #4: As one commenter who’s been doing some rounds, “who is benefitting from all these?”, pointing to the contest sponsors that require linkback to their own websites.

Point #5: Why the preference to Google? Personally, I would have gone with Yehey (poster boy for Philippine search?). Patriotic tayo di ba? *joke*

Growing interest in blog advertising

There seems to be a growing interest by companies to advertise on local blogs.

This week alone, I received 3 inquiries for direct advertising here on my blog and on PTB. I have had the occasional advertisers before but they were from individuals and fellow netrepreneurs so the sale is often sealed verbally.

Lately, the inquiries we’re getting are from SMEs (small and medium enterprises) and top firms in the country. Of course it got me pretty excited that to the eyes of these companies, the blog is no longer just a blog or a personal journal, but a good avenue for targetted exposure.

So I whipped up a blog profile and advertising rate card for YugaTech. (You can download it here.) :D

I’m still doing one for the travel blog and the PTB.

Ahhh… so there is still hope for online micro-pubs in this little country of ours. :D Imagine if we could somehow “consolidate” the top ranking quality blogs in the Philippine blogosphere?

Playing WarCraft 3 with voice + gesture commands

Imagine playing a network game of Warcraft 3 without a mouse and keyboard? Well, this demo video of a PhD study by Edward Tse (BSc, MSc of Interactions Laboratory, Department of Computer Science, University of Calgary) shows it all using a combination of speech and gesture commands:

Warcraft Game Speech and Gesture Commands

Warcraft 3

See video demo here.

Interaction on a digital table supports face to face collaboration with the added benefits of digital displays (e.g., real time updates, access to the Internet and rich satellite imagery). Core features of my work include rich whole handed bimanual gestures, speech and gesture input, and multi user interaction.

Application areas include tabletop gaming, military command and control, air traffic control and hospital emergency rooms.

Really cool invention. Reminds me of Tom Cruise in the movie Minority Report (2002). It’s not just for computer gaming but a whole plethora of other fields of discipline as well.

Nevertheless, I’d love to try playing Warcraft with that myself. :D
