Essentials of a typical Advertising Rate Card

I started getting direct advertisers on this blog about two years ago. The other blogs just followed suit. It was an exciting prospect because the growing interest in blog advertising was something that popped out of nowhere. One of the best ways to prepare yourself for direct advertisers is to come up with an ad rate card.

About 13 months ago, I shared a sample of my rate card here. You can still download a copy of the file here. It’s an old one and I’ve actually updated that one into a new PDF file (which needs another round of updates because of the redesign). Essentially, there are 3 basic parts that you should include in your rate card and we’ll tackle each one of them.

How to spot a real advertiser?

Every week or so, I get emails from potential advertisers on some of the blogs and forums that I operate. For every 10 inquiries or proposals that I get, just 1 one them pushes thru. Why? Because a whole bunch of these inquiries are sent out blindly or the proposals are outright out of whack (read: one-sided).

Other bloggers have also forwarded me emails they got for ad inquiries. I’d like to share some of the more obvious signs on how to spot a real advertiser.

Check your WordPress themes for malicious codes!

If you’re using free WordPress and Joomla themes, then you should check your theme files for some malicious codes. This issue was first raised by Derek of 5ThiryOne (via JaypeeOnline) which hit Digg’s frontpage the other day. One of Derek’s free WordPress themes have actually been modified and inserted with malicious codes.

Harry Potter Book 7 Contest Winner

Update: My apologies for not announcing the winner of the Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows Books Contest last night, midnight, due to some oversight. I scheduled a post and timestamped it 12:00, August 6, 2007. It’s supposed to be 00:01 instead so the post shouldn’t come out until noon today. Sorry to those who came to the blog and waited for the announcement.

We now have a winner. There were half a dozen people who joined the book raffle contest. I read thru all of the creative alternate endings and got a good kick out of it. Anyway, without further delay, the lucky winner is…

Google, where’s our street maps?

I’m still waiting for my street level maps from Google. I know it’s hard to gather all that data for the entire world and resources might be scant. In the US, Microsoft is lugging it out with Google in taking street-level 3D pictures. Just look at their click-happy SUV armada prowling the streets and taking hi-res pictures for geo-mapping.

Tonton and the 300, a translation.

I’ve been hearing about these YouTube videos from so many people already. Most refer to it as Tonton and the 300. The series features several portions of the movie 300 and Troy dubbed in Ilonggo. Those who’ve watched it on YouTube say it’s really funny even if they don’t know what the people are talking about.

I’ve decided to translate one of the videos from Hiligaynon (or “Ilonggo”) to English. See video and translation after the break.

Discovery Communications just bought eco-lifestyle blog TreeHugger.com, allegedly for $10 to $15 million. Then, TechCrunch published a recent study by the University of Texas (sponsored by Chitika) claiming that the top 50,000 blogs based on Technorati generated a total $500,000,000 in revenues for 2006 {download PDF here}.

Though this report does make the whole blogging industry look very lucrative, I feel that the study is just wrong on so many levels.

Blogging & Strategy Tax

I believe I first read about the term Strategy Tax from Dave Winer’s blog many years ago. Dave explains it here with examples. Dare Obasanjo makes the same observation with search giant Google in his blog entry “Google’s Strategy Tax: Integrity of Search Results vs. Ads vs. Cross Promotion“. In essence, strategy tax is the price your users/customers pay in favor of a business strategy (and likewise, the other way around).

In (pro) blogging, I believe we can also illustrate several examples along these lines:

Celebrity Blogs on Libel and Copyright Lawsuits

Coming from someone who has had a brush with libel (though not thru any of my blogs), I assure you that the possibility of getting one in the future isn’t far fetched. Instead of sending the same emails over and over again, I thought I’d share some of the lessons I’ve learned with that recent experiment. The entire process was a great learning experience which gave me a few insights on the way search engines behave with these types of situations.

The discussion will primarily be focused on WordPress blogs but entire the idea will also be applicaple with any other stand-alone blogs, minus the plugins.

Going Pro: Network or Indie?

I went to meet an old acquaintance last week who was pitching an idea to me. Our discussion revolved around the choice between putting up an independent blog or writing for a blog network. I explained that there are two sides of the coin when going pro — would you consider it a business or a career? To illustrate, I compared the advantages and disadvantages of the different salary models currently being used by blog networks.

Early this year, when I was still writing for BlogHerald, I wrote this little observation…

Hack attack in progress

One of the ugliest thing that could happen to a blog or a website is getting hacked. For a person like me who runs his own dedicated server, this is a daily pain in the neck. We get hack attacks everyday, some by expert hackers but mostly script kiddies who take some scripts laying around somewhere and try to inject malicious codes into your site hoping to get access.

Since Friday, my blog has been targeted incessantly. You could be next! (Or you’ve already been, you just don’t know it yet.) So be wary.
