Ideal PC Specs for Internet Cafe?

For the past 2 months, we’ve been doing rounds on setting up a new internet cafe business. We wanted to start small just to see the demand in the chosen location. One of the biggest challenge was figuring out the specs of the computer stations.

Since we were in a tight budget, we had to settle for something affordable yet has ample performance to run most of the popular online games available in the market.

Here’s what I ended picking for the workstations:

AMD Athlon X2 7750 2.7GHz Black Edition
Redfox MCP6P-M2 GF6150 AVL
NVIDIA GeForce 6150 GPU (onboard, 512MB shared RAM)
2GB Apacer DDR2 800MHz RAM
320GB Seagate SATA HDD

Including the casing they end up somewhere around Php10,000 each (monitor not included). At the lower end of the price list was a 2.6/2.7GHz Athlon 64 LE1640 which is only Php2,000 but the Php3,450 Athlon X2 7750 seemed a pretty good investment that will last the business 2 or 3 years in the future. And since it’s a BE, one can easily overclock this CPU later on.

The 320GB HDD was also chosen instead of a cheaper 80GB because in the long run, the resale value of the former will make up for the price difference.

For the graphics card, on board GPUs are mostly capable in running majority of the online games now. All is needed is allocate more shared memory on the card from the system. That’s where the 2GB RAM comes in. I’m still on the look-out for an optional discrete graphics cards to use for PCs running 3D-intensive games.

What do you think? Is this specs a reasonable one? What would be an alternative for the same price point?

that motherboard’s chipset (MCP6P-M2)is already 3 years old.. you could have probably bought a geforce7050/amd690 (which is 2 years old) or a geforce8200/amd780 (barely a year old) chipset-based mobo bout at most 1k more. if you had to stick to the budget you could slice off the extra cost on the hdd(160gb?) or the processor (athlon x2 4800+?). performance-wise, an athlonX2 4800 + amd780g/geforce8200 combo would outperform a 7750BE + geforce6150 combo by a mile in most online games

also that motherboard might end up not let you overclock that 7750 BE, and could encounter compatibility issues since its meant for 1st generation 90nm AM2 processors.

aside from that everything looks good :)

  2. Jam. says:

    6150 is not enough IMO

  3. john says:

I think there are no new processors right now that are not able to run even the latest 3D games. 2gb of memory is more than enough for XP to run all games available. What is important is the graphics card. Invest to the least on geforce 9500gt or ATI 3650. 320Gb of harddisk is too big while 160Gb is enough. On-board graphics should not be carelessly considered for gaming purposes.
    So here’s my specs,
    AMD Athlon 64 LE1640 2.6Ghz
    ECS 6100PM-M2
    2 Gig 800Mhz RAM
    Geforce 9500gt 512MB, 128bit DDR2
    160 Gbytes Harddisk
    Case and Power
    Keyboard & Mouse
So somewhere around 11,500 pesos w/o monitor

Since these units are meant for gaming, I think the question that needs asking is what games will they run? The Nvidia 6150 will be fine for most MMOs but it does feel a bit itchy since it’s a 3-4 year old gpu/board

  5. yuga says:

Thanks for all the comments about the motherboard. From feedback by other net cafe owners, the mobo is usually one of the first ones to give up, along with the HDD.

Never thought that the Redfox mobo was very old. We’ll look into other boards like ECS or MSI on our next purchase. We don’t do very heavy 3D gaming so I thought the 6150 works just fine.

  6. FSProcyon says:

I’m not quite updated with the prices with AMD processor. Didn’t imagine i has gone this low since my Athlon X2 4200. For internet browsing purposes the on-board graphics card is more than enough but for the 3D online games get a mid-range like nvidia 7300 or 7600 DDR2 series would be enough. 1GB RAM i think is enough to support most of the application considering the speed of your processor and SATA 160GB HDD would run faster and booting. MSI, ASUS and REDFOX motherboards are my top recommends. Don’t get a ASROCK which has an overclocking capabilities. Mine got busted twice, luckily it was still under warranty that time. You don’t want to make a really fast PC workstation since your just starting and PC internet business gets their revenue through its running time the customer is paying you. You earn by the time the spent YUGA. Just a tip fro mmost of the internet shops i know. Hope this helps. For the monitor i recommend SAMSUNG LCD but most of the LCD monitors on the market are good enough i believe.

  7. FSProcyon says:

By the way, a 2.7ghz Athlon to 3.0ghz would be enough and working for the next 3 years. Just maintain everything. I think a athlon 5600 X2 or a bit higher would be appropriate enough for your internet cafe business.

  8. jerome says:

try using Windows XP 64Bit Edition instead of the usual 32bit. using 32bit edition of Windows will just use half of the AMD Athlon 64′s processing power. i tried running Left 4 Dead on both 32 and 64bit and i was surprised at 64bit’s speed. Ever since, iam using 64bit. in short, since 64bit os uses the whole processor, it’s faster. cause i think each processor is 32bit

Hey guys, quite a good discussion here.

I want to start a new netcafe and was wondering how much of a start up capital would i need and what paperworks do i need to make this happen.

Looking to have around 10 pcs and a server.

    Thanks

  11. yuga says:

@miguel — 150k to 175k for the 10 PCs. Php20k for the server. Depends if the place is rented or owned but expect Php300k as starting capital.

  12. JOHN says:

Hi.I just want to ask how can I overclock a pc with an Athlon LE1640 processor, emaxx MCP61P-AVL Version3 and a 1GB PC800..and what values will I enter in the bios setting to improve the performance without the risk of overheating the processor and the mboard.Thank you

hello, i am putting up an internet cafe around dorm areas in u-belt. I have promised lessor i will not offer games…so services will be usual email, chat, files/music downloads, etc… i figured i would still have clients as they are now more on chatting..

1.) may i know the specs of 1 pc i need for these services? 2.) do you know of anyone that offer complete assembly of these PC with terms?
3.) how much is the salary for the staff?

hope to hear from you, thank you.

  14. onnies says:

I find this post very very useful but i just got few questions, are the specs posted came in pre-assembled from the seller or built by yourself?
and if its not too much to ask where can i possibly avail those specs at the said prices? Coz right now I think am ready to upgrade my PC :D .

  15. yuga says:

@jean – salary could be based on minimum wage. the pc specs could be the same as I posted above. Depends on the number you will need, dealers can give you some freebies or something.

@onnies – It came pre-installed when I got it at PCX.

I was reading that AMD is better than INtel? does this matter?

    Thanks!

  17. Don_FranZ says:

    @ Don

kinda… in some applications… you can buy more powerful processor at the same price compared to intel. *i’m pointing out amd.

in other words you can upgrade in more higher video card… than buying underpowered costly intel proc.

    Hi I’m planning to set up my net cafe, tapos na ang construction ng place, nalilito lang ako sa specs kasi year 2007 pa na games ang mga alam ko bago ako pumunta dito sa Dubai. Ang specs. ko ay ito;

    AMD Athlon64 X2 7750+ 2.7Ghz 3MB AM2
    ASUS M2N68-CM DDR2 A/V/L
    Kingston 2 GB
    Western Digital 160 GB SATA
    Brand New LCD 17″
    ATX 500W Black/Blue
Windows Vista Home or Windows XP Home
    INNO3D GF9500GT 1024MB DDR2 128bit

Kakayanin ba ng specs. ko yung mga bagong games ngaun?
Windows Vista Home or Windows XP Home?
Paano ba ang gaming license? Saan ba kukuha ng
LAN game license katulad ng NBA 2k9, Red Alert 3, DOTA?

Pls. post out some comment :)
    Thankyou

  19. jeric_raval says:

    @Christopher

recommendation ko lang, assuming na somewhere dito sa manila ang shop eh mabibili mo sa gilmore shop tong setup na to around 17K (nagflufluctuate ang presyo sa mahirap magcommit ng fix price)

    ECS™ A740GM-ML or ECS™ GeForce 7050M-M
    AMD™ Athlon64™ LE-1640 box (AM2) 2.6ghz 1024kb
    Kingston 2 GB
    Western Digital 320 GB SATA
Chimei 18.5″ (CMV-95QD) wide black (glossy) DVI
Cheapest Casing that has 80 mm fan near the video card
    500 W generic power supply
Palit Inno3d 256 MB DDR3 (don’t get inno3d and 1GB as this card is not optimized for the memory size)
    NTC Keyboard
    A4tech optical mouse

This setup performs OK for a gaming shop na kayang kaya mga games na binanggit mo without eating up your electric bill. And consideration for warranty on the motherboard, cpu, hdd and LCD is all atleast 2 years each.

Don’t worry about upgrade, mga 2-3 years ng around ang AM2 na technology, on how the pc trend goes mga 3 years na lang ang natitirang active cycle sa market ng cpu, motherboard at ddr2 memory. After nun forced ka na rin bumili ng second hand dahil ang presyo sa market ng paobsolete na piyesa is more than the newer models. Good luck sa iyong computer shop business

  20. mga mgkknu b yung gnyan n set po?>

  21. bobsietabs says:

sa akin lang po… ang specs ng pc for computer shop depends sa class ng mga tao na magrerent sa iyo… if you’re planning to get pc around 20k+ thats good (pang intel lalo na kung may budget ka)… pero kung low budget ka naman pwede na yung le1640 or x2 5000 mga around 15k with monitors (onboard video card)… based sa experience ko.. unang priority mo is to get a good location… good internet and then at least core 2 or x2 for amd with good video card computer for your business…

  35. Kevin says:

The goal is pesos per hour for internet cafes. Honestly location is the only factor, even with junk computers users stop at the first café along their path from school to home or work to home. Mostly students and gays is all you really see in most I-cafes. Those that recommend 64 bit Operating systems for an Internet café should consider that XP 32-bit can run Microsoft’s Steady state for free and you never need to run antivirus programs after Appling disk protection, just download your patches on one workstation that has the antivirus on it then scan your patches first before patching your systems. Avoid the X2-7750 AMD or any processor over 90 watts. Use a 65 watt processor or lower. We in the Philippines have the highest electric rates in all of Asia. As far as DDR use 1 stick only 1 or 2-GB in the slot furthest from your processor. The fake AMD processors that are sold in the Philippines will not support Standby in the first slot the first time the BIOS updates. Any mother board that has everything onboard 512 Video on board is great for any internet café. Do not add another card because its money for nothing, you will not make more money with another video card.

Wow there is so much to write that will mean the difference between being broke or making money. Like services that you should disable or place into manual, anything you can stop from running will save you money. Disable Restore if you use WDP plus gaming sucks when a restore point is automatically created in the background. The most important thing is the session manager. Many internet café owners will use Café manila because it’s already been hacked and can be gotten from every technician in the Philippines, this is truly unfortunate, not for Café manila for the Internet café owners, I say this because there is one program that can manage your session time, manage porn access, manage your processors power usage through task and service management, it allows you to set your systems advanced registry setting and polices, it allows you to restricts programs to limited run from locations. When the session time is up the system is placed in standby mode, and of course the biggest issue of all is Safe mode with network access, I have seen many attendants making money on this simple issue, they grant access to safe mode at a reduced rate or full price and many of the poorly written session managers simply cannot stop the attendant from stealing this way.

I am an internet café owner operator, before taking on the I-Café business I wrote programs to access and operate automation equipment, I wrote Café Joe and Café Davao it was written by a Café owner operator for Internet café owners. You can get this software for free from me through davaosale.com feel free to test it on 2-Client workstation for an unlimited time period. Have your electrician record the Computers and monitors amperage on the two units then compare the amperage to the same two units running without my software, PROOF Positive saving you can see with your own eyes! If you decide you want the full version it’s yours for 3800 Pesos with the ability to manage 254 clients. also i have several questions for you:

      * Would you recommend 1000baseT
      connectivity for my I-cafe?
      * Would you recommend cisco, TP link or
      Dlink, etc….
      * Since I’m inclined towards using Gigabit
      connectivity, will it have significant
impact on my users… since 100baseT is
      much predominant in the Netscape.
      * Cat5e or Cat6? What level of future proof
      can I benefit from this?
      * Will this work with cafe Joe/ Cafe Davao?
      * Which Mobo will be mostly capable of
handling Gigabit connection… Also pls give me some insights of what amount of ram should I use to avoid bottleneck on the hardware… Need to streamline the hardware and network for speed consideration.

    - Motherboard integrated Audio, VGA & Lan
    - 2gb DDR3 RAM
    - 500gb HDD
    - DVD Multi Drive
    - 15.6″ LED monitor
    - ATX casing w/ 500w PSU
    - AVR

    worth only for 15,100.00

    how would this look?

    • Kevin says:

      Hello Jan…

If the processor is an e-series it’s great. If it is the 7750 model of the 250 avoid it, the 7750 has a TDP 95 watts rating, make sure you get the X2-250 65 watt processor or the X2-250e 45 watt processor.

I recommend the 880 G+ Red Fox motherboard because of the integrated Video. Just remember there is no PS-2 mouse port so use a Genius NetScroll 110X mouse its USB cord has a large diameter and will last a long time in an I-Cafe.

2 GB DDR3 is all you need for XP.

Just make sure the HDD is 7200 RPM.

DVD Multi drive, why add a DVD I have many I-café locations, once in a while a customer will ask for a DVD, honestly we see it as just a waste of money, plus if you do not cycle the tray once a week when you do get a user that actually needs it you will need to force eject the tray because the drive band will no longer work.

15.6″ LED monitor. You will regret it. Use the 19” AOC model e936Vw, in most areas in the Philippines I get this for 4700 to 4875 pesos.

ATX casing w/ 500w PSU. Considering that no I-café computer has ever pulled more than 200 watts under any running condition. The hostage computer industry here in the Philippines subjects all of us to ignorance on sizing a power supply. If you look at the power curve of any 500 watt supply it is absolutely the wrong thing to do. SORRY I can only say if you use Techwill kiss some of your hardware goodbye and even more of it when used with an AVR. If you have time order 80/20 rated 350 watt supplies even if they cost twice. The reason is the power curve will put the performance curve and actually computer usage in an optimal range so your watt loss or heat will be only 35 to 50% of what it is with the 500/550 watt supplies. Oh yeah your electrical savings related to the Computer could be as much as 35%, but the big savings will be in your air-conditioning costs.

AVR, wow another scam here in the Philippines and in most of the world. I HAVE NEVER used an AVR and I will not. Your PSU should be rated as Voltage regulated, this means VR and guess what the power going into the PSU is Alternating at 60 hertz so your PSU is a Alternating Voltage Regulated power supply (AVRPSU). Now if that does not say it all how about this, the capacitors in the adder AVR are used to keep the voltage stable for a few milliseconds’, we have seen many voltage sags here in Mindanao for periods longer than any AVR can handle, we have also seen in one of locations 7 other cafes had damaged mother boards each of which used an AVR. It’s all up to you if you use an AVR however long sags in voltage will damage both the AVR and then computers hardware.

Set your motherboards BIOS, enable Wake on LAN, and under power management set the ACP to 3, and also from within your OS setup the power management of your LAN adaptor (Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby)

I go to this site once a week so if you have any additional questions please be patient with me.

      Kevin

  38. Kevin says:

    Hello Jan,

This is what you should pay for what I recommended above.

Your price of 15,100.00 is about 1200 pesos to much, and I am assuming your monitor is the inferior Chimei not the AOC LED.

9700 PC with an extra fan mounted under the PSU, avoid the fan in the middle of the cover. When the fan gets older the sound is magnified.

    4700 19″ AOC LED Monitor

14400 Total not including the mouse or keyboard.

      Hi Kevin!

Can you please send me the specifications on my email. i am interested on your price.
      Thank you.

    • Kevin says:

      zamai,

I do not sell computers. If you are in Davao City I will certainly help you to keep some of your money by avoiding a few of the computer shops in this area. Most I-cafés think the local shops here are good, they are not. Many are just trying to survive and certainly your interests are the last thought when they are offering you a package.

I can help you pick the components and peripherals’ to keep your monthly costs down, and what keyboard and mouse you should use as well. We have sourced replacement keys for one keyboard brand in this area and trust me these little details ad up.

You can join the COA, Inc group in Davao in August and receive my software free along with detailed plans on a cubical design that will stop 100% of the theft most I-Cafes have. Also the Café Joe software uses Windows Disk Protection so DeepFreeze can be completely eliminated. Café Joe also allows you to configure all policies and restrictions on all your Client workstations at one time with one click!

If you want to see an engineered I-café go to Toril and ask anyone in the RCFI building located on Agton Street for Kevin, if I am in the Philippines I will be no more than 5 minutes from the RCFI building.

I am in need of advice what specs should I buy for gaming and internet that I can get it in a very low price.. My budget is only around 300-350k.. Where can I buy pc’s convenient when transporting the units. I am really in great need of advice.. You can contact me through my email..HOpe you can give me some or lots of advice..

      cheb,

      380,000 will get you:
      18 units
      Your Electric utility deposit
      Cheap cubicles
Two electrical branch circuits, one for the Computers and one for an Air conditioner
      One 1-HP wall mounted Air-conditioned

The area you are looking at will allow you rent your units out for about 6.5 hours at 10p/Hr during a 24 hour period. This is the yearly hourly average. Your unit hour utilization will be higher during scheduled school months but your off calendar period will kill you, so I am giving you the average based on an actual shared computer model I wrote to cover your area.

You may change the numbers to make yourself feel better, I WOULD NOT!

      Your monthly costs:
      Electric – Computers + Server, printer: 7,912
      Electric – Air Conditioner: 7,169
      ISP/Phone PLDT: 4,950
      Typical Lease: 10,000
      Employee(s): 4960
      Service AC: 175
      Theft: 100
      Manipulated Tax: 300

Your monthly costs will be 35,566, or your total annual costs will be 426,792

Your total sales year to year will be 427,050
After you subtract your cost from your sales you will earn 258 pesos a year, YES A YEAR!

You will not survive at 10p/Hr, if you cut out the air conditioner your Suki will teach you a lesson real fast.

It is my opinion that anyone who invests into a business should know something about the Return On Investment (ROI).

Your business venture will likely ruin you in that area!

An ROI for an I-Café should be 15 to 20 months anything longer than 20 months insures you will never be able to maintain your business, in your case you are losing money from day 1,

There is some great info on this thread that i never considered, especially from Kevin.

I am starting an icafe in Manila, currently in the construction phase. I have selected a company to buy my computer setup from and now I am killing them with detailed spec questions… (thanks Kevin)

The CPU’s are the 65 watt model, but the PS’s are 600 watt… a bit over kill..

If I was going to replace the PS’s, what would you recommend I get?

    Thanks

    • Kevin says:

Try to get an import 80/20 at 350 watts.

It’s worth the Return on Investment (ROI) for the money to pay what you must.

The power curve on a 600 watt supply is a joke for any I-Cafe, for that matter any personnel computer anywhere in the world.

Most consumers are ignorant. They keep asking for bigger ignorantly thinking bigger is better it is not!

Below are the typical numbers for a 65 Watt thermal designed power processor taken by me using a Fluke 123 industrial Scope-meter.

The numbers were collected from 89 different computers using BIOSTAR A880G+ motherboards, 2 GB Ram, 500GB 7200 RPM HD, no Optical drives, the monitor was running during every test and its power usage is included in the numbers below. The monitors were 95QD LCD CHIMEI. I recommend the LED over LCD now that it is available, I clearly am stating avoid AOC, they have not honored their warranty for us.

      Amps(I) Watts(W)
      0.6456 142.0359551 Never exceeded
      0.4711 103.6348315 Processor at 100%
      0.4122 90.68449438 Normal user
      0.0387 8.515730337 idle amps

Use these numbers to figure your power needs for your computers with comparable or better monitor power numbers only.

      Hope this helps someone.
25 Units as I have explained should be ran on a 2-pole 20 amp breaker using number 12 AWG or 2.05(D-mm) or 3.31 mm2 copper wire.

Maximum at 213.4 volts is 19.37 amps if all 25 units are powered up simultaneously.

Maximum 11.78 amps using 100% of one processors core on all 25 units (99.9% of all online games use one core)

10.31 amps pull is a typical number for 25 units all occupied.

0.97 amps is a typical number for 25 units idle and available using my software to reduce power usage.

0.11 amps is a typical number for all 25 units when they are all in Stand By mode, avoid hibernate power modes to insure Cache files do not get corrupted.

Thanks for the info Kevin…I intend to invest in some reasonable PS’s.

I would be very interested in checking out your program.

I just finished my shop in Tondo Manila. Starting with 10 computers and we built our own furniture. I spend 320,000p (lease, dsl, store front, furniture, aircon, and computer package from Bytes Computer Solutions).

search for AB&S iCafe on FB…

Don’t buy hard discs for workstations. Buy ccboot. Is cheaper and fast if you had good server with enough memory and at least gibabit lan everywhere. Advantage:
      1) Electricity bills are lower.
      2) Virus or malwares are vanish when the station reboots.
      3) Hard disks failures are over!
      4) Lesser noise.
      5) Lower heat.

You need PXE support at workstations motherboards lan card. You may lost some megabytes from main station memory which do the job of local fast cache. You need 2003 server or 2003 server 64bit or newer OS if you had more than 4GB of server memory.

Guyzz related to internet cafe specs, shall we also consider the gaming side? May we ask the tech expert here based on the specs mentioned above and on the pevious replies, what do you think are the games that can be played here; Please enumerate the games currently played on the cafes only including Lan games / online / single player?
