Seagate Technology, one of the premiere companies in the storage solutions industry, has recently announced that it’ll halt the production of three of its four 2.5-inch 7200rpm hard drives to give way for next generation Solid-State Hybrid Drives.
Solid-State Drives or commonly known as SSD are becoming a top choice for consumers and manufacturers because of its speed and its small profile. The need for a storage device with a smaller footprint and faster read/write capability has put a lot of pressure for spindle-touting Hard Disk drives that are comparatively slower and are a tad bulkier than SSDs.
In line with this trend, Seagate will cease the production of these three 7200rpm 2.5-inch HDDs (see below) later this year. The company will instead focus its efforts in further developing their Hybrid drive offering which is the Momentus XT.
• Momentus 7200.4
• Momentus 7200.2
• Momentus Thin 7200
As manufacturers strive for a thinner, faster and energy efficient machines, it only makes total sense for Seagate to allocate their resources and R&D on their upcoming SSD and SSHD products. This puts the company in a better position to compete with the other big names in the industry.
