For the past 2 months, we’ve been doing rounds on setting up a new internet cafe business. We wanted to start small just to see the demand in the chosen location. One of the biggest challenge was figuring out the specs of the computer stations.

Since we were in a tight budget, we had to settle for something affordable yet has ample performance to run most of the popular online games available in the market.

Here’s what I ended picking for the workstations:

AMD Athlon X2 7750 2.7GHz Black Edition
Redfox MCP6P-M2 GF6150 AVL
NVIDIA GeForce 6150 GPU (onboard, 512MB shared RAM)
2GB Apacer DDR2 800MHz RAM
320GB Seagate SATA HDD

Including the casing they end up somewhere around Php10,000 each (monitor not included). At the lower end of the price list was a 2.6/2.7GHz Athlon 64 LE1640 which is only Php2,000 but the Php3,450 Athlon X2 7750 seemed a pretty good investment that will last the business 2 or 3 years in the future. And since it’s a BE, one can easily overclock this CPU later on.

The 320GB HDD was also chosen instead of a cheaper 80GB because in the long run, the resale value of the former will make up for the price difference.

For the graphics card, on board GPUs are mostly capable in running majority of the online games now. All is needed is allocate more shared memory on the card from the system. That’s where the 2GB RAM comes in. I’m still on the look-out for an optional discrete graphics cards to use for PCs running 3D-intensive games.

What do you think? Is this specs a reasonable one? What would be an alternative for the same price point?
