Intel Core i7 940 CPU Benchmark

After a month playing with the new Intel Core i7, here are some benchmark results I got based on comparisons between PC Marks and SuperPi 32M of 4 relatively high-end CPUs. The Core i7 940 is expected to top the results but what would be more interesting is by how much.

The rig that was lent to me by Intel had the following specs:

Intel Core i7 940 2.93GHz
3GB DDR3 RAM
NVidia GeForce 9800 GTXÂ

I then compared results with several other rigs lent to me by Intel and AMD (Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 @ 2.53GHz, AMD Phenom II 9950 X4 @ 2.6GHz and Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.4GHz which I own).

SuperPi 2M:
Q6600: 52 seconds
Core i7 940: 29 seconds

Super Pi 32M:
Q6600: 23 mins. 9 secs.
Core i7 940: 12 mins. 17 secs.

With SuperPi 2M and 32M , the Core i7 940 scored between 79% to 88% better than the Q6600. The Core i7 performed better under higher stress with SuperPi 32M.

pcmarks results
With PC Marks, the Core i7 940 performed 43% better than the Q6600 and 30% better than the Phenom 9950 X4.

The Core i7 920 2.66GHz has a price tag of Php16k at PC Express so I can only imagine the 940 to go as high as Php30k (based on SRP released by Intel Philippines).

How much faster is the Core i7 940 than the Q6600 in SuperPi 32M?

The Core i7 940 completed SuperPi 32M in 12 minutes 17 seconds, while the Q6600 took 23 minutes 9 seconds.

What was the PCMark score of the Core i7 940?

The Core i7 940 scored 5397 in PCMarks.

What is the estimated price of the Core i7 940 in the Philippines?

The estimated price of the Core i7 940 is up to Php30k based on Intel Philippines SRP.

Intel core i7 processors have great performance as compared to others however it there is importance of individual requirement.

It doesn’t matter if a processors price is high and what’s important is, the performance is worth the cost and you are satisfied of the processors function.

est P30,000 a processor?!?

A better investment would be to buy the mid-ranged cost/performance processors available today and spend the rest on RAM, HDD & Optical Media Storage and GFX Accelerator and other peripherals(tv-tuners etc) and still have enough money for a snack.

agree…why would i spend a lot for a rig that will be outdated after 2yrs…yes that is true…i got my rig(e7200,p35mobo with 9800gtx) and now new stuff are available for the same price as my rig a year ago…and they’re step higher…

well, its up to you if you want to waste money…

well at current times its not practical to go buy a core i7 the price is too damn highâ€¦.. and also with its other components like the motherboardâ€¦

for now if I am going to build my own pcâ€¦ i would choose a AMD based systemâ€¦.

for my motherboard i will go with any brand which has a 790fx chipset, a phenom 2 X4 black edition (its a cinch to overclock :)) 1000w power supply a radeon hd 4890 for maximum graphics performance, 500gb of hd, and 8gb of RAM (yeah im going for the 64bit os)â€¦â€¦â€¦.

personally i don;t like intelâ€™s they are extremely hot not enough performance to cost ratio and donâ€™t easily overclockâ€¦â€¦

we should be reminded that processor (whether its intel or amd) is not the be all and end all of a rig. it should be accompanied by high-end graphics card and a very promising memory modules. believe me, without the other mentioned, its just a dud.

The Intel Core i7 is now on top selling processor of Intel Corp. ever. because of its specialized components and I’m sure this is the new evolution of upcoming more innovative computers an introductory path that enables us to make more things efficiently..

Dang! that’s the super i7. But i’d rather choose the latest AMD which is sufficient enough for a simple yet bloody (ab)user like me. indeed AMD enough can kick ass unlike i7 which is better yet only in my dreams as a middle income earner.
AMD phenom= somehow pang masa.
Intel i7= dream PC ng masa.

i7 would remain as the cpu queen but
the i7’s price tag is soO high also the platform is very expensive as well as the ram.. so i guess amd (paired with the unified “all amd” 790fx nb chpset, phenom 2 x4, and ati hd4870x2) would remain as my own personal choice.. And ofcorz the price is lower! Hihihi…

Well the Intel i7 is undoubtably fast, but its like price tage is off the scale….. woww.

I would recommend a comparable AMD phenom II which in its quad core level now…….

For me I would stick to AMD….. Intels are too expensive…. and you dont get what you pay for

If only its cheap to upgrade to an i7 platform. You need atleast 2 new components (mobo & RAM) for this.

Yuga, could you use the latest version of CPU-Z to display a much more accurate info about the CPU.

I use to immediately upgrade once a new generation intel CPU is around now I think I have to skip and wait for the next.

Its just that for the fast five years of upgrading I just barely notice any speed difference(in real word testing) specially in the field of multimedia and video production. IMHO.

Can’t wait for AMD’s Phenom II. I know it won’t perform anywhere as good as Intel’s Core i7 but price to performance ratio should prove favorable to AMD specially when we factor in motherboard costs.

I’m currently very, VERY content with my Compaq CQ40-107AU which lets me run all of AeriaGames MMO games like Shaiya, Twelve Sky, Shin Megami Tensei, and even Project Torque at their highest settings (except for anti-aliasing which is set anywhere from disabled to medium) at the laptop’s default 1280×800 resolution.

I hope AMD decides to further enhance their Dragon platform by creating an even more power efficient and over-clocker friendly motherboard which supports Hybrid Crossfire as either a graphic enhancing solution or as a power saving solution depending on the discrete GPU attached.
