GoPro’s 16-camera Rig Called Odyssey Gets Priced

During the Google I/O conference last May, the search giant launched its virtual reality platform called Jump, along with a then unnamed prototype from GoPro which featured 16 Hero4 Black cameras all strapped on a fancy panoramic contraption.

Today, Google and GoPro officially announce that said camera rig. It’s called the GoPro Odyssey and both companies provided some key information about it, including its price.

Because of how these cameras are setup, Odyssey can capture immersive 360-degree videos which are then stitched together by what Google is calling the Jump Assembler to form a stereoscopic VR video.

The result, as you might’ve guessed, is nothing short of outstanding. Here’s a short sample video shot using the new GoPro Odyssey.

The sad part about it is that you won’t probably get your hands on one of these, even if you can afford its bank-breaking price tag of $15,000. That is because both Google and GoPro have a say on who gets to purchase an Odyssey, and those who want one must sign up for the program.

Well, you can give it a shot if you want. If you are one of the first few to be approved to own a GoPro Odyssey, you can expect it to be shipped in November and will come with all the essential accessories you need to create your own 360-degree VR video.
