A blog reader sent me an email today and wanted to share some astonishing photos of flying jets escaping the sound barrier causing the Prandtl-Glauert singularity. As much as I wanted to give him credit for this, he asked not to be named or linked.
At speeds near that of sound, the temperature and pressure variations occurring at every speed can also be exaggerated in steady level flight. The mechanism for this near-sonic exaggeration of the temperature variations is the so-called Prandtl-Glauert singularity which requires that pressure and temperature perturbations approach ± ¥ as the flight speed approaches the ambient sound speed.
More pictures with captions here, here, here and here.
I am no physicist, but these pictures are awesome.

cool, wala ako nakitang X-35 sa mga picture, speaking of jets watch the movie STEALTH..
Is that an SR71 – Blackbird? Mach 5 yata.
Darn, I couldn’t recognize them jets even if it were in front of me.
wow! amazing shots. when i was a kid, i dreamt of flying a fighter jet. fav movie – “Top Gun”
@jaypee
Maybe you should try the flight simulator XPlane. I had a demo but well I’ve have flown several planes already, Concorde, 737, 747, Cessna, Hornet… But I failed to land. It’s so easy to take off, the landing is the problem. However, you still need to do some crash course about the terminologies used in flight, like those roll, yaw, mixtures, taxi in the airport, flight plans, etc. I have relied too much on GPS because I cannot read the analog instruments. Hear the radio say “Squawk 9-2-0-0… Heading something something left”… that I don’t understand too.
I also modified the Hornet so I could fly super fast. But since I am no avionics engineer, with the poorly designed wing – it broke off and separated from the fuselage. What a tragedy!
Ay, I had about two successful landings pala. One is about a few meters off the runway, well yes I even went beyond the runway, and another by completely shutting down the engine so I could slow down hahaha.
The good thing is you can fly and crash again and again with the simulator and be back alive! Ahihihi.
@fleeb
looks like a hornet or a tomcat, hehe. nice photos
na-try nu na ba sa SM mega ata yun, Flight Sim (F-22/ F-18/ F-14 etc) naka-hydraulics and some more swinging parts (pwede nakabaligtad ka na sa upuan mo!) nakakahilo at first pero nakaka-addict once you get the “hang” of it, hahaha.
OT: hey look guys i got my gravatar na! hehehe (joy!)
Sonic Boom!
@jaypee
@hoop: cute ng pug.
@hoop
@fleeb
@joeyboey
thanks, wala pang kid kame kaya dog muna pinagpapraktisan… hehehe.. kamukha niya si maurice sa madagascar diba? hehehe
@darksparrow
@ hoop
pareho tau, la pa baby… doggies muna… me 2 ako halfbreeds… http://yugatech.com/joeyboy/?p=11
ung tapat namin condo me pug at mini-pin… tuwing gabi nilalabas, pinaglalaruan namin pug… tinuturuan namin kumanta ng “who let the dogs out”
@joeyboy
nice to know mahilig ka rin sa dogs. may halfbreed rin ako na isa pero pinapaalagan lang sa akin ng tito ko to so anytime puwede niya bawiin. dahil nga sa halfbreed namin to natuto nang mangalabit at kumatok sa pintuan ang ibang aso namin… hehehe
@hoop
i’ll try if i can get my hands on those flight simulators. thanks sa info.
btw, i just installed Photopress, uploaded a couple of images but there are no photos found in my photo album. can anyone help me with this? thanks!
@ hoop
mga doggies ko naman sanay magpakarga…
wow is jets all u ppl talk about
[...] Couldn’t resist not posting this one. The same anonymous blog reader who provided a link to the picture of a Prandtl-Glauert Singularity sent me this one. (Btw, the old post is so popular in the SEs it now have close to 15,000 page views) [...]
Does anyone know where I can get airports for x plane 86+? please let me know. thanks!
