Rumor: Canon EOS M is Canon’s first MFT camera?

All the while we thought that there’s only a slim chance that Canon would enter the mirrorless market because they were doing so well with their DSLR lineup and their point-and-shoot. That is, until we heard of rumors that an MFT camera is already on the works.

So why did we think that a Canon MFT (Micro-Four Thirds) camera is a highly unlikely? Well it has something to do with pricing actually. Canon might have a hard time positioning the product that’s smacked in between their high end point-and-shoot (S100, G1-X and SX40 HS) and their entry level DSLR (1100D) without sacrificing one or the other.

In our opinion, if Canon manufactures an MFT camera, it will have a significant effect in the pricing of their high end compact digital cameras. This may also be the reason why the company has forgone this idea for quite some time. Or did they?

This is supposedly what the first ever MFT camera from Canon may look like based on rumors. Dubbed as the Canon EOS M, this camera is, in our opinion, is what you’d get if you fused the S100 and G1-X together. While little is known about the specs of the EOS M, what gets us excited about it is that it’s rumored to have an EF mount. For the uninitiated, that’s the same lens mount used in all EOS cameras which means that you can use your Canon lens with this.

What’s rather disappointing about these leaked images is the absence of a built-in flash, which we hope that will be compensated with higher than average ISO. But if you already own an external flash, this shouldn’t be a problem.

If this rumor is true, then Canon should make up for lost time for not embracing the MFT technology earlier like its imaging competitors Olympus, Sony, Nikon and Panasonic. Only time will tell if the rumored Canon EOS M has what it takes to go up against already established MFT cameras in the market, if ever there is one.

ronnie, here’s another article on the new Canon camera, this one’s from Digital Camera World. they used the term CSC, compact camera system (i think).

    http://www.digitalcameraworld.com/2012/07/23/canon-unveils-its-first-csc-the-canon-eos-m/

  4. Avatar for PJ PJ says:

not a rumor. a photographer/blogger featured this on his site and has included press releases from Canon USA.

here is the link to his blog: http://www.iphotocourse.com/official-canon-mirrorless-eos-digital-camera/

This article must be edit ASAP because of a wrong information. Before writing an article you should search for the term.

  6. Avatar for Name: Name: says:

Well, calling it mirrorless will also be confusing. All Point and shoot cameras are all MIRRORLESS. So if you do go by your correction to calling it Mirrorless, your article title will be: “Rumor: Canon EOS M is Canon’s first Mirrorless camera?”

So what’s wrong with that title? It won’t be the first mirrorless camera that Canon will dish out.

The correct term would be Mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera, or Electronic Viewfinder with Interchangeable Lens (EVIL).

Do some research, dude. Di na pwede ganyan ngayon. People are much better informed nowadays and could easily comment and be heard. Sabi nga ni Lourd Deveyra, “GMG: “Google mo, gago!”

    • Avatar for wb wb says:

Yup, this is can be best categorized as MILC since it does not have a built in electronic viewfinder.

hay sana po lumabas na yan para sure ubos ang masa sa market… go go go Canon… this would be exciting actually for other people to enjoy.. pero honestly if they are using a same sensor expect the lens are big and heavy…

  11. Avatar for Rad Rad says:

This is nothing but bad reporting. The writer clearly knows nothing about cameras.

First, Canon will not make a Micro 4/3sâ„¢ camera because it is an Olympus brand. It’s the same as saying “Samsung releases its next generation iPhoneâ„¢ with a Retinaâ„¢ display”.

Second, you will not be directly able to use your existing Canon EF lenses because of the flange focal distance.

Third, how did the writer ever come up with the idea that a Canon EF mount lens can go with a Micro 4/3s camera?

    • Avatar for Turonbulaong Turonbulaong says:

Sorry if you feel that way. We meant mirrorless not MFT. Regarding your third point, I have an Olympus EP-L1 with a Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Aspherical (IF) MACRO via Olympus MMF-1 lens adapter. This is the same lens I used on my Canon 7D.

      http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/tamron_18-270_3p5-6p3_vc_n15

That’s where I got the idea that a Four Thirds Canon EF Mount lens can be used on a Micro-Four Thirds camera. So other than the multiple erroneous description of MFT that should have been mirrorless, I think I know something about camera.

    • Avatar for Name: Name: says:

Sir, m43 is not an Olympus brand. But I do think that the writer should totally brush up his knowledge about cameras and revise this article.

    • Avatar for Vin Vin says:

To be precise MFT is a brand of Panasonic and Olympus.
If this camera comes to the consumer market, I bet it will host an APS-C sensor, not MFT.

    • Avatar for wb wb says:

m43 is not a brand po. aside from the fact that there is indeed a rumor, fail itong article. hope the writer can make another go at this.

    • Avatar for Chris Chris says:

@wb: Rad never mentioned that u4/3’s is a brand.

The writer maybe a techie, but obviously, he doesn’t know much about cameras, moreso, the Olympus brand, considering the number of times he wrote down “MFT” in relation with Canon. LOL!

    • Avatar for Rad Rad says:

“Four Thirds Canon EF Mount” I didn’t know that the Canon 7D came with a 4/3 lens mount. That’s news to me. You are clearly mixing up your lens mount standards.

The MMF-1 allows one to attach a Four Thirds lens to a Micro Four Thirds body. Unless you have a third-party EF to 4/3 adapter, which you failed to mention, your EF Tamron will fit the MMF-1 just as well as it will fit Nikon bodies.

But, if you do manage to attach your EF lens to the EP-L1, how do you change the aperture?

And, what about my second point which you conveniently steered clear of?

Micro Four Thirds is arguably a brand. It is not a manufacturer’s name like “Olympus” or a product name like “Pen”, but it is still an idea Olympus and Panasonic use to market their lens standard.
      http://www.brickmarketing.com/define-branding.htm

    • Avatar for wb wb says:

like you said, m43 is a standard. panasonic and olympus are still competing against each other even though they both make m43 cameras and lenses. other third party lens manufacturers also make m43 lenses. putting it this way, i don’t think olympus and panasonic would think of it as a brand. rather, it’s the result of their strategy that allows them to make smaller, lighter cameras that are inter-operable with other manufacturers’ products that adhere to the standard.
but i totally agree with you re lens mount. it’s too early to get excited even about mounting EF/EF-S lenses in this camera. the picture clearly suggests that the camera has an EF-M mount. we can only hope that it does accept EF and EF-S lenses, with or without adapter, retaining all features and operational performance. and no, not all Canon EOS cameras have EF mounts. EF-S lenses are definitely not made for EF cameras.

  14. Avatar for Marilyn Marilyn says:

First things first MFT means Micro four thirds or M43 brand name Olympus.
Second is try reading some Wikipedia… Peace

  15. Avatar for Francis Francis says:

Why do you keep on referring to it as a MFT (Micro Four Thirds) Camera? I don’t think Canon will make a Micro four thirds mount camera. A Micro four thirds camera should have a micro four thirds sansor and a MFT mount. I doubt Canon will follow this standard. Maybe the correct term for your article is a Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Camera and not Micro Four Thirds.

  16. Avatar for kevn kevn says:

Wow! If this is true then I’ll surely buy it! I wouldn’t buy any other camera products aside from a Canon brand. I hope it would have an EF mount too!
