Toshiba develops refocusing camera module for smartphones

Toshiba Corp. plans to bring smartphone photography to a whole new level by developing a camera module that lets a user refocus an image even after it was already taken.

This 1-centimeter cube-shaped camera module houses 500,000 microlenses, each measuring 0.03 millimeter in diameter. These microlens captures its own focused image which are then combined together by an imaging software to compose a large yet complete picture. The result is a technology that is similar to the US-made Lytro Light Field camera which allows a user to alter a captured image’s focus or help fix an out-of-focused image altogether.

Currently, Toshiba is planning to commercialize the module by the end of fiscal 2013 and is looking for tablet and smartphone manufacturers that could integrate the said module in their devices.

Yes @anthony it is the Light Field Camera known as the “Lytro” Steve Jobs when alive (no Duhh) was talking with the Lytro Creators and Try to produce the camera for the iPhone Unfortunately it was too big. Now that toshiba has created a sensor “that could Possibly do the same thing” Unfortunately it still will not work for the iPhone due to the sensor being thicker than the iPhone but hopefully As Years or better months past by Toshiba and Apple can work together and create the sensor thin and small enough to fit the iPhone. This does not only includes the iPhone but guessing the Lytro camera being popular its possible that other phones might have one as well :D

I wonder if this would be put into low end phones to strengthen their low pixel count. But then again, how much would this cost that it would still be “low end”? haha
