Poll: Which desktop CPU are you using right now?

Listen to article

Was in SM Cyberzone MegaMall yesterday after a meeting, did the rounds and was looking for a desktop processor for my next gaming rig (specifically, the 1st generation Intel Core i7 960) but could not find any store that still carries them (they were all pushing for the Sandy Bridge Core i7 2600).

So today, I’m hoping I could find that CPU and be able to complete my hodge-podge of a gaming rig (still have a couple of LGA 1366 ROG motherboards Asus gave me a year or two ago, plus the video card from Inno3D I won in a raffle and Gainward gave me a kick-ass top of the line GPU several months back, the HDDs that Western Digital gave me last year and the Cooler Master CPU case I bought just for kicks). So all I need is a fairly new processor and two 4GB sticks of RAM.

This is in anticipation of Diablo 3, which should be out anytime soon.

Anyway, I was thinking that if I still cannot find that Core i7-960, then I should have a back-up processor. The most likely candidate is the AMD FX6100 3.3GHz 6-core processor.

Anyway, I thought of asking my readers what desktop processor they are using now. It’s been a while since we did a poll here at YugaTech.

Do chime in via the comments section and tell me what desktop CPU you are using right now and what do you use it for?

My desktop rig has a Celeron 330 (2.66 Mhz, 256Kb L2 cache, single core). It’s about 7 years old. It is used web browsing, general office applications, simple video editing and light gaming. I know it is in its last leg and planning to have a new one within the year. As to which CPU (Intel or AMD), I’ll wait for the release of Windows 8 and determine which one provides a better price:performance ratio. I might even try to have an ARM-based rig if it became available.

Best use i5 2500. Best bang for the buck processor out there. Go with 2500k if you plan to overclock your processor otherwise stick with 2500. :)

For real? GDDR6 HD 8200 and DDR4 RAM? Well, maybe there is a 1024 SSD even if I’m not sure. but for the 1st two I mentioned? hell yeah! I will believe it if you post such a CPU-z screenshot and GPU-z! or else..another talkshit..

Lol JM, you don’t have to take him seriously, although even if Ivy Bridge isn’t even out yet, I’m real excited as to what Haswell will bring to the table.

@Ivy B

I would’ve been impressed with the set-up, but an HD 8200? Dude that’s onboard graphics level XD You should study AMD GPU nomenclature first :)

Running a “desktop replacement computer” or a rather large laptop: Asus G74SX-3DE with an I7 2630QM and a GTX560M 3GB Video Card…

If it was not for Electricity I would have gotten a Twin 580 SLI rig paired to a 5 GHZ OCed 2600K!

We currently have 2 Desktops

Both have Athlon II x3(1 unlocked older one to X4 other one is just new so havent tried it yet)

also

3 laptops that has a C-50, a e_450 AND a Turion x2.

2 Laptops with Intel Pentium and a Core 2.

1 Desktop that just got demoted but I presume the Core 2 Duo E7200 in it is still functioning.

Hmm just saw the other question.

Both Desktop have a 6850 and a 5750. i Use the both for gaming

technically speaking I see no use in buying Fast CPUs if gaming is all i care about. Buying an expensive GPU is better than an expensive CPU in games

still using the athlon x2 250… while we are on the subject of the amd fx6100, I think you are better off with the core i5 2500k or an i7. The fx6100 was on the top of my list for an upgrade until I saw the benchmarks… the core i5 handily beats the newer fx6100 on most benchmarks.

the i7 2600/2600K is faster, cheaper, and more efficient than the old lga1366 i7s. its around as fast or faster than the 6-core i7 980x in benchmarks. i guess the old 1366 ROG boards you have is the only reason left to buy the i7 960.

as for what i have running, i’m using an i5 2500k (and gtx 470) mostly for playing battlefield 3 and browsing.

FX Series as of now is not that bad lalo na my patch na sya for windows 7. for multi gpu setup, FX Series is not the processor for you. In gaming, FX Series is not bad as other says(Single GPU Setup). Anyway, AM3+ ang FX Series pero backward compatible sya sa AM3 with bios update even required by mobo manufacturer. For intel setup, pwede na ung i5 2500k na cpu good for single and multithreaded apps.

Here’s mine.

Mobo: ASRock 990FX Extreme 4
CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1055t 2.8GHz
RAM: Gskill Ripjaw X 1600 1.5v
GPU: Sapphire Radeon 6850 1GB
