Globe offers 3.5G

Globe has recently announced their launching of a commercial 3.5G service, ahead of Smart recent news on commercially offering 3G (dubbed Smart 3G):

3G or third generation mobile services is a high-speed mobile network that allows subscribers to make video calls, watch streaming videos or television, and browse the Internet at speeds comparable to broadband, wired Internet.

3.5G, however, is the next evolutionary step toward a faster network that uses what the industry calls High Speed Downlink Packet Access or HSDPA.

This service, which competes with Philippine Long Distance Telephone’s WeRoam service, allows users to connect their notebooks or laptops to a HSDPA network using a PCMCIA network card worth 13,000 to 15,000, according to Patricio Pineda III, head of business planning of Globe Telecom’s wireless group.

Globe Telecom is offering HSDPA service for a monthly fee of about 2,000 pesos, which provides unlimited wireless Internet connection to Globe Telecom’s HSPDA network. {full story}
