Philippine’s Mobile Industry

It is estimated that there are over 30 Million cellphone users in the Philippines. With just about 85 Million in population, that’s one cellphone user in every Filipino. I find it a little unbelievable.

Yes, we have the working class which almost always has a cellphone or two. I see yayas, tinderas and taxi drivers sporting a cellphone. But with 60 percent of the Philippine population still under the poverty level, I am still amazed that the cellphone-per-user density is that high.

I know cellphones are already chep now but how did the low-income earners able to get a cellphone? Call it GSM - Galing Sa Magnanakaw. Not always true but it’s a reality. Low end models even sell for Php500 only. And they’re everywhere.

There’s this joke in Recto that whenever you visit the place and look for cheap cellphones, the tinderos they will ask you what mdoel, then run off and find someone else who has it, steal it from them, and sell the phone to you dirt cheap.
