Nikon’s considering to enter the smartphone scene

During an interview at Nikon HQ in Japan, President Makoto Kimura said that they’re looking at the possibility of changing their approach to offer products to that “bigger market”. And by bigger market, he meant smartphone users.

This statement came after the news of the industry-wide decline in compact camera sales last quarter which is partly due to the significant increase in smartphone usage all over the world.

“The number of people taking snapshots is exploding by use of smartphones that sold 750 million or so last year and are still growing. Our task going forward is to find an answer to that change.

Although the imaging firm has already forecasted the possible decrease in point-and-shoot sales, they understand the need for Nikon to broaden their horizon to stay competitive in this ever-changing-world.

“We’ve centralized our ideas around cameras but can change our approach to offer products to that bigger market,” said Kimura. He then adds by saying that “We want to create a product that will change the concept of cameras, and it could be a non-camera consumer product.”

Nothing is confirmed as of this moment and Mr. Kimura declines to outline the company’s future plans any further. However, I think we can all agree that his statements towards the current trend definitely hints at a Nikon smartphone in the future.
