Have cellphones abandoned the infrared?

Relevance: 100%      Posted on: May 15, 2009

Was wondering about this for some time now. IR was once a staple feature for connectivity options on mobile phones and it was even more common than Bluetooth. Today, I almost never see infrared as a feature in the newer phones. Bluetooth survived but it looks like IR was totally forgotten. And I thought there was much more potential with transferring data thru light/lasers than radio signals, tech-wise. I might be wrong though. There could be low-end models that still have IR in them. Has anybody bought a cellphone recently that has IR in it?

HSDPA laptops in 2007

Relevance: 50%      Posted on: December 28, 2006

I mentioned this to the girls over at Globe the last time we had a thanksgiving dinner. Since Laptops with built-in HSDPA cards are starting to come out, would it not be a good marketing idea to bundle these rigs with SIM cards. HP is coming out with one model, Compaq 6400, while Lenovo is partnering with Cingular to do the same. Dell signed a deal with Vodafone to offer the same 3G-ready laptops (Dell Latitude D420) and I think Acer has one too. If them telcos can easily snag new customers by bundling cellphones with postpaid plans even at…

Relevance: 47%      Posted on: June 30, 2014

House Bill No. 4511 or the "Kill-switch Phone Security Act of 2014" has been recently filed in Congress which aims to mandate telcos to equip all their postpaid mobile phones with a kill-switch software. The Kill-switch Phone Security Act of 2014, authored by Ang Matay Alagaan Representative Lorna Q. Velasco, is an act that requires all cellphone network service providers to "pre-install a reliable and perfectly functioning kill-switch software" in all their mobile phones that they provide to postpaid subscribers to enable them to remotely disable it or erase all data therein when reported stolen. "The enactment of this bill…

Which gadget brands depreciate so quickly?

Relevance: 47%      Posted on: April 3, 2011

Been helping friends sell a number of their gadgets for years now and have noticed that in recent years, gadget prices have depreciated much faster than before. Devices like laptops and cellphones are among the most notorious when it comes to depreciation. I think there are several factors that contribute to this effect. Product Lifecycle. Before, devices like cellphones usually have a lifecycle of around 9 months to 12 months before they are replaced with a newer model. Today, it's around 6 months or sometimes even shorter. Purchasing Power. People can afford these device more than ever before. Remember when…

Isn’t the Pager already dead?

Relevance: 41%      Posted on: April 12, 2007

We were having dessert at Cafe Breton in GB3 a while ago with the rest of the BoB thinking when we could record our next episode when our discussion rolled over to those ancient Nokia cellphones and the pager or beeper. Aren't they dead yet? At least, here in the Philippines. Easy Call used to be one of these paging companies but has now evolved into a call center (with clients like Wendy's). Are there any other companies still into this? Just curious.

I was on my mobile phone with another potential client for about 15 minutes then I checked my load balance to see how much credit I still have left. I was a bit surprised to see that my last call didn't even reach Php100.
