Digital Christmas Gift Ideas

Christmas is fast approaching and I’ve been asking everyone for gifts! hahaha

From my end though, I thought it would be nice to come up with a set of list for a possible digital Christmas gifts. Here’s what I had in mind:

  • A digital camera, preferably Canon Ixus series. Hand-me-downs will do if they’re a close relative.
  • A mid-range Nokia celphone. Can be had for Php500 to Php800 a month for 12 months on BPI sale. I like the N6020 personally; the white has that iPod feel to it.
  • Desktop speakers. Logitech has a lot of good ones between Php1.5 to Php3k.
  • Mouse. Ah yes, nothing like a brand new mouse — choose from Logitech MX510, MX 700 to the laser-rigged MX1000.
  • If they have an mp3 player, a brand new set of Sennheiser headphones.
  • A brand new blog (my signature gift) — with a catchy domain, hosting and AdSense to boot!
  • If the person has a PC, why not give her/him a TV tuner so she can watch “Ang Panday” and “Wowowee” while blogging?

Will think of some more to add.

Pinoy Big Blogger “Experiment”

Yeah, everybody’s calling it an “experiment”. Why experiment you say? Because it’s all about “wanting to see, learn, and profit” from search engine traffic for popular keywords. And Pinoy Big Brother is the word these days, and so is Ang Panday.

Manolo came back with a vengence to all Pinoy Big Brother bloggers out there, wanting to help political blogs like his regain the top spots in the Philippine blogosphere. Mikey surely did gave him that impression.

Benefitting from search engine traffic is not about how good you write about a certain topic, how passionate you are with the issues or how aggressive you are with your principles. You get ziltch in Google for that.

It’s all about how many times you wrote the popular keywords (and its permutations), how many times you stuff universal themes such as “sex”, “scandal”, “nude”, “videos”, “pictures”, and “sexy” with each and every popular name you see on TV, and how often you write about them.

While very good and popular bloggers are generally known/discovered thru “blogrolls”, the more popular blogs are discovered thru Google. Yes, Google makes it possible for an unknown bloggers to have a popular blog. If you get the drift. Just ask Big Brother.

P.S. Just checked. PinoyBigBlogger.com is still available. Anybody want to own it for a blog project?

Why ShowBiz Blogs rule the Pinoy Blogosphere

Divergent Poles decided (about 2 weeks ago) that he will no longer post entertainment topics on his blog and has been a bit disappointed that political blogs have fallen off the Top 10 in PinoyTopBlogs.

As os today, only the Sassy Lawyer’s Houseonahill.net remains on the Top10 for political blogs. Jove, Max Limpag, PCIJ, and Manolo’s blogs slipped off the rankings in the last couple of weeks.

This tells me what Filipinos would rather read about in the blogosphere; Encantadia, Pinoy Big Brother, Ang Panday, etc. are on top of the list and one’s rights to express oneself freely in the web is a distant second. I have seen folks fight harder over which channel is better (GMA vs. ABS-CBN) than this issue seeing that there are scant comments regarding this issue. Now this is sad. I will stop here, before I say something I regret.

Allow me to dig up some reasons why, less on the social perspective and more on the technical why this trend is happening.

  • A huge portion of a Political blog’s traffic comes from regular readers. Repeat readership is not a significant factor in the rankings.
  • A big majority of a showbiz blog’s traffic comes from search engines. It reach up to 80% for most of the newer showbiz blogs. These is one of the difinitive factors affecting blog stats.
  • Keyword popularity. There will always be more searches for “Cassandra Ponti” than “Gloria Arroyo”.
  • Age group of internet users. Political blogs only attracts internet users somewhere between the age of 21 to 60. Showbiz blogs can attract internet users as young as 12 and as old as 80.
  • Traditional media influences. There will always be more showbiz shows than political/current affairs on TV.

Hence, in terms of market reach and mass appeal, showbiz rules. (This may be true with other countries as well.)

More reads for the long week-end.

The week-end will be real slow. No banks or offices, at least until Tuesday. Most will be packing a longer break until next week if they filed a vacation leave for Wednesday and Thursday.

For me, it means, I get to blog more across all my blogs and even read more blogs myself. Here are some of the more interesting reads I’d like to share with you:

What is the “Ang Panday” Experiment?

The “Ang Panday” project is an SEO experiment of Marc for the upcoming teleserye “Ang Panday”, starred by Jericho Rosales and Heart Evangelista. Full disclosure can be read in his recent entry over at Pinoy.Tech.Blog.

The project involves a real-life experiment on SERPs using link popularity. The goal here is to increase link popularity for the Ang Panday blog.

So, if you want to help out, show some link loving by pasting these codes into your blog/s:

  • <a href="http://ang-panday.blogspot.com">Panday</a>
  • <a href="http://ang-panday.blogspot.com">Ang Panday</a>
  • <a href="http://ang-panday.blogspot.com">Ang Panday – Jericho Rosales</a>
  • <a href="http://ang-panday.blogspot.com">Jericho Rosales and Heart Evangelista Forever</a>

We’ll be watching out for this little “Panday” SEO exercise in the following weeks.
