Interesting late night Tuesday round up!

Unlock iPhoneThere’s a plot to release the iPhone unlocking software into the wild, wild web. A prize of $100,000 is in the offing. Several individuals and companies have actually solved the AT&T unlocking dilemma but threats of lawsuits prevent them to move forward.

Reports say that unlocking the iPhone invites DMCA complaints from AT&T and Apple. As usual, Apple will fiercely try to lock this down to protect their contract with AT&T. But what if they can’t?

It’s all about the money…

eBay acquires Skype for $2.6B

After much anticipation over the past week, US auction giant eBay has just announced they’ve bought Skype for about $2.6bn (£1.4bn).

The Skype website has full information about the deal:

The acquisition will strengthen eBay’s global marketplace and payments platform, while opening several new lines of business and creating significant new monetization opportunities for the company. The deal also represents a major opportunity for Skype to advance its leadership in Internet voice communications and offer people worldwide new ways to communicate in a global online era. Skype, eBay and PayPal will create an unparalleled ecommerce and communications engine for buyers and sellers around the world.

What does this mean for every Skype and eBay users? Integrated conference calls into eBay auctions I guess. Now, buyers and sellers will also be able to talk to each other before closing a deal. It’s also possible to have video streams later on. Just stretch your imagination.

Founded in 2002 by Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis, Skype offers high-quality voice communications to anyone with an Internet connection anywhere in the world. The Skype software is easy to download and install, and enables free calls between Skype users online. Skype’s premium services provide low-cost connectivity to traditional fixed and mobile telephones.

I just hope support and customer care isn’t as inept as Paypal.

GreenZap

Just last week, a new online account service, GreenZap, launched its site for pre-registration to potential online users. Though it was new, I took the plunge and signed up for it. It aims to go head-to-head with bigwigs such as Paypal, eBay’s online payment processor.

GreenZap members can send money to anyone around the world as long as they have an email address. Members can spend money purchasing goods and services from other GreenZap members or from other popular sites, including eBay® and Yahoo® Auctions. Members can load money to their GreenZap account for spending or earn money by telling others about GreenZap.

During the pre-registration phase, GreenZap is rewarding consumers with $25 in their account for signing up. The account is free and there are no set-up charges. GreenZap will be launching early this summer.
