Huawei E587 claims speeds of up to 42Mbps

The Huawei E587 is an upgrade to the Huawei E586 supporting HSPA+ networks but this time, instead of the 21Mbps speeds of the latter, the E587 can now handle bandwidth speeds of up to 42Mbps. I believe this is also the same unit that is being using by Smart in their Rocket WiFi Plus plan.

PhotoBloggers’ Session: Shooting Fireworks

I’ve discussed this idea with Anton several times before but we’ve now made some really concrete plans especially that the World Pyro Olympics will start this Friday.

Here’s the plan — set up a Blogger EB and teach Photography for Bloggers. All you need is a point-and-shoot camera at the very least. No fancy stuff but if you have an SLR, the better. And don’t forget the tripod!

So, anybody interested? Free tickets here & here. Here’s the first session details:

Dates: Weekends of January 6, 7, 12 and 13, 2007.
Meeting Time: 5pm until the end of the fireworks usually around 10pm.
Meeting Place: Starbucks, Blue Wave where we will park our cars and walk to MOA and the venue before 7pm.

You can leave a comment here or go over to Anton’s blog to sign-up. Btw, this is a free session and all you need to bring is your own baon and coffee money.

Off to Indonesia

Another week out of country, this time to Jakarta. Still lucky that the free wifi internet here at the NAIA is still working though a bit sluggish. AirborneAccess has strong signal but doesn’t seem to have any internet connectivity thru it.

We’re off to Jakarta via Singapore Airlines in an hour but will have an hour stop-over at Singapore.

Must have spent a fortune on new shoes, clothes and stuff. Hopefully, my luggage won’t get lost in translation this time. :D

I can’t make it to the Philippine Web Awards but my fellow bloggers at PinoyTechBlog and PinoyTravelBlog will be there, just in case we win an award (and solidify that lifetime PR7 link). *heh* If anyone is going to the PWA, you can hook up with Migs, JAngelo, Jolo, Anton, Karla or Arnold.

Again, you can reach me via SMS (international roaming) but if it’s not urgent, an email would do. ;) That is, if I get some internet in my hotel room.

From the Inbox

Several things I’d like to share coming out of my Inbox:

  • Krispy Kreme is really sending me a truckload of doughnuts. They’ve sent email on several of my blogs. Maybe we could all do some Krispy Kreme blogger meet-up? Doughnuts on me.
  • PinoyTravelBlog & PinoyTechBlog both made it to the Finals of the 9th Philippine Web Awards (PR7 links immortalized!). Awards Night will be on December 7, 2006, at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Makati City. I think I will be in Jakarta on this date. Anybody want to go and proxy me? Free tickets.
  • Luis discovered that the newly launched Makati PNP Website was a one-man operation. Can we safely say kickbacks? The guy has a Friendster blog.
  • The domain speaknsurfcafe.com points (URL mask) to my post here about Globe’s Speak ‘n Surf. Should I thank Victor Martin Mariano for using my blog to point his domain. That’s a neat trick huh?
  • Very fine photos of USN F/A-18 fighters and their Prandtl-Glauert Clouds (c/o my reader who wants to remain anonymous). His very first contribution last July garnered total pageviews close to 17,000.
  • Shout out to Nick of Tingog.com for being very understanding. I respectfully declined his blog tag. If I did, I would have to do the same to a dozen others before him. Thanks, mate.
  • Another reader also emailed me asking for ways to determine if his GF’s blog has been added to Google Sandbox. We did a little poking around and it looks like it. Is there a definite tool to find that out? How about get a link from an old and highly trusted domain? Would that fix it?
  • Another email from a reader asks how to go about after being banned from Adsense. I explained the varying levels and suggested ways around it. This one deserves a whole post in itself.

Anybody else emailed me that I forgot to answer? Please resend them after 48 hours after the first one if I haven’t gotten back to you.

Google changing lives in the Philippines

A recent article of USA Today’s Tech section entitled “Google’s hidden payroll” states that Google’s Adsense program has greater effects in 3rd world countries such as the Philippines.

Anyone with a site is eligible, and Web forums are awash in success stories of small online entrepreneurs placing ads on their sites, sitting back, and watching checks from Google roll in.

But it is Web entrepreneurs in the developing world who are reaping the greatest benefit from the program.

A lot of successful cases have been shared in the official Adsense Success Stories and hundreds of thousands more worldwide with a growing number of them from the Philippines. The article mentioned a couple of them:

Andrew de la Serna runs a small search engine in Davao City, Philippines, and derives about 40% of his monthly income from Adsense. “It’s great to do what you love to do and earn money from it at the same time,” he says.

His earnings have allowed him to purchase a cellphone, develop new websites, and build up his savings account.

Dr. Rodolfo Rafael, who owns a small medical clinic in San Fabian, Philippines, says the Adsense earnings from his medical website allow him to “dream big” and reinvest in his medical practice.

The Social Software Weblog adds:

Perhaps those of us trapped in English only, US-centric webspace only come across developing world sites with Adsense when one comes by email or blog comments to pick our fat pockets. (Of course there’s no shortage of people doing the same or worse in the US as well.) Meanwhile there’s a whole world full of people out there talking amongst themselves and doing their thing online – and apparently Adsense is kissing their babbies and rescuing their kittens from trees and stuff.

Anybody care to post links to their favorite localized sites supported by Adsense and containing compelling, original content?

Ok, so I searched for the names of the people mentioned in the story and these are their sites as far as I can tell:

* http://www.nibbleguru.com/
* http://www.alleba.com (Ouch, the company blog has 2 readers via Feedburner. Seems like a totally legit search engine for info related to the Phillipines though.)
* http://www.freeware-alternative.uni.cc/

For US Publishers, a thousand bucks ($$$$) may be too small for them but for us here in Asia, it could already be equivalent to a middle management level salary.

From my Inbox

Once in a while, a regular reader would send me topic suggestions for my blog. If I like the topic, product, service, or I see some potential I would plug them here. Here’s the first batch “from my Inbox” :

click-farm.com was created to provide a comprehensive listing of spam sites that use Google’s AdSense and other pay-per-click marketing software in a less-than-ethical manner. We maintain a dynamic, user-created listing of these sites and provide this information free to the public. Download this list today and add it to your competitive filter in AdSense to immediately see increased revenues.

If you’ve struggled trying to figure out why sometimes you may get a few high-yield clicks here and there while most clicks only pay a few cents then you’re a victim of the click farms. Their low-paying ads dilute the legitimate higher paying ads and keep them from appearing more often on your site.

Here’s a sample list of splogs advertising on AdSense you may want to include in your blocked list.

Web Dev Philippines (www.webdev.ph) is a new focus online community for web development. It includes a specific category called SEO Philippines for those interested to discuss search engine marketing, site optimization and related stuff. Another section focuses on blog marketing, development and blog monetization. I will be regularly lurking that area during my free time. Hop on a join us there. (Update: Just realized I was promoted to forum mod there. :D )

MillionDollarHomePage copycats. It is estimated that there are about 500 copycat sites of The Million Dollar Home Page of Alex Tew. There’s this one French guy who emailed me telling me about a similar projects called MonPremierMillion.com (French for My First Million). I liked the way he placed the pixels which is patterned from the map of France.

Anyone planning to put up The Million Peso Blog?
