Get up to 250GB storage for your GMail

Two months ago, Yahoo! started giving its email users unlimited mailbox storage. Since then, the battle for the email storage got heated with the ante going on Yahoo’s side. I thought it was just a matter of time when Google would offer GMail users unlimited storage too or something close to what Yahoo! E-Mail is offering.

That hasn’t happened yet, but for those hungry for more mailbox space, how about a 250GB upgrade?

Yahoo! Mail Unlimited Storage

I was just checking my Yahoo! Mail today and I noticed it has finally upgraded my Inbox to unlimited. Cool.

Does that mean we’d bee seeing something similar to a GDisk storage soon?

How does unlimited storage work?

It’s pretty straightforward—users that follow normal email practices and comply with our anti-abuse limits can consume an unlimited amount of free email storage. This will apply to both new and existing users.

I guess that means “no”.

Anybody else still using Yahoo! Mail noticed the unlimited storage upgrade?

Lycos offers free 3GB email

Lycos has just upgraded all their email and online storage services to match that of everybody else.

Lycos said Wednesday it had released a beta of the latest version of its Web-based mail service, offering users 3GB of storage and the capability to send unlimited attachments of any size. The company said Lycos Mail is intended for those who need to share large file attachments. In comparison, most other services only permit files of up to 10MB to be attached to e-mails.

Lycos said the remaining feature set of the service was essentially the same as the previous version. The webmail offering is the second service to be imported from parent company Daum Communications of Korea. In October, the service launched Lycos Planet, a version of Daum Planet, which is an interactive networking site.

Free EmailThere’s a catch though. The content of a Lycos Mail Basic account will be deleted if the owner does not login and check the account at least once every 30 days.

I think all other email providers are just playing catch up, otherwise, they’d all loose all their users to Yahoo! or GMail.

Since the Lycos service is ad-supported, and from the looks of it using Adsense, Google ends up winning either way.

Free Unlimited Storage from Elephant Drive

Elephant Drive, in association with Amazon is creating a service similar to that of XDrive. However, they are offering unlimited offsite backup free of charge if you sign up as a beta tester.

Run a Backup Job – You can ask ElephantDrive to to run a Backup Job either by “folder” or by “type”. For a “folder” Backup Job, you select a specific folder on your computer (like “My Documents,” or “important stuff,” or “C://”), and ElephantDrive will make a backup of every file and folder that lives there. For a “type” Backup Job, instead of selecting a specific folder you choose one or more file types (like “doc,” or “xls,” or “mp3″), and ElephantDrive will make a backup of every file of that type it finds. We tried to make this process even easier by having a few of these jobs pre-defined and ready to run — in only two clicks, you can get them started! Better yet, once created, these jobs will automatically run at regular intervals, so you’ll always be up to date.

Upload a specific item – You can also move files and folders between your computer and ElephantDrive on an ad hoc basis using the Trunk Manager. Either drag-and-drop like any other Windows programs, or select the items you to move into your Trunk or back to your computer and click the upload or download buttons.

Carbonite: Backup your entire PC online

After Google’s plan for online storage was leaked and Box.net launches with a free 1GB online storage (the PRO account costs $99.99/year), there’s this new company called Carbonite.

The good thing about thsi thing is you basically download a software which run on the background in your PC then uploads all your files whenever you’re connected to the internet. It also monitors your drive for any new files or updated files then swings back and upload the latest versions of these files.

They claim they can store any amount of your files for a flat monthly fee of $5. Pretty cheap for unlimited online backup huh?

They got a 3-month free account so I signed up and checked it out. Upload speeds average at 5KB per second despite the fact that I’m connected to 1.5Mbps wifi here at Starbucks. If you feel that 5KBps is too high, you can set the software to lower the upload speeds too.
