Smart completes roll-out of 9,500 LTE base stations

Relevance: 100%      Posted on: July 19, 2012

Since we beta tested the LTE service of Smart from last year (it ended around March), I've been asked a lot of times when they will officially launch the service in the Philippines. There was lot of noise about it since last year leading to 1st quarter of this year and then there was silence. We were expecting that by June, Smart would have already launched its LTE service commercially and we'd actually be able to experience those blazing fast mobile internet speeds (I was getting as fast as 40Mbps on SpeedTest and up to 2MB/s on torrents). During the…

The Ayala-led telecommunications company, Globe Telecom, has announced that its entire network is now equipped with 4G HSPA+. The telecom giant has just completed its 100% 4G HSPA+ rollout last month. Back in June, Globe Telecom became the first full 3G network in the Philippines. "The Globe 4G HSPA+ network extends the company's ability, as a telecommunications provider, to adequately serve high data usage of customers amid proliferation of bandwidth-intensive applications and growing preference for smartphones and other mobile devices," Globe President & CEO Ernest Cu said. Next in the pipeline is the improving the LTE network of the company.…

Rumor: SM’s Henry Sy buying Globe Telecom?

Relevance: 74%      Posted on: May 27, 2012

We got this really surprising tip from a source that rumor is going around that billionaire tycoon Henry Sy is looking to buy controlling shares of Globe Telecom. Henry Sy has interestes in a lot of markets -- retail, real estate, banking, leisure, etc. This rumored interest in the telecoms industry could have been sparked by the recent acquisition of Digitel by PLDT, putting the competition between Smart and Globe in a spotlight. Earlier, Globe has secured a $90 million loan from China Banking Corp. to spend for the expansion of its 4G network in the Philippines. China Bank is…

Globe Telecom takes over BayanTel

Relevance: 74%      Posted on: December 28, 2012

Without much funfare, Globe Telecom is effectively the new owners of BayanTel. Or something to that effect. The negotiations between Globe and BayanTel have been going for some time now with the former offering to pay the latter's debts. Globe and BayanTel has been in talks about this for a long time and the two has even gone into joint-use in recent months. BayanTel has been in debt for a long time and is under rehabilitation. The biggest asset that telcos are looking to get from them is the additional spectrum. In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, the…

Globe Telecom launches new website and logo

Relevance: 70%      Posted on: October 1, 2013

Out with the old, in with the new. That is what Globe Telecom is doing now as they usher in a new and modern look for their website and company logo. The first thing you'll notice when you visit the new Globe webpage is the use of a richer shade of blue, which is also evident with their new glossy logo, and a set of clean looking finger-friendly icons. The slider page is still there but is now slightly larger and placed at the center. Hover your mouse on the icons placed above the website and it will show another…

Leaked iPhone 4S Pre-order Page from Globe Telecom

Relevance: 70%      Posted on: November 24, 2011

An anonymous source gave us this link of the pre-order page for the iPhone 4S from Globe Telecom. This could mean we're really almost close to the launch of the iPhone 4S in the Philippines (but we already knew that from Globe's CEO a couple days ago). The page is typical of the pre-order page of Globe when they do online reservations for the iPhone (as we've seen in the last several years). Double-checked it several times and it looks like it's nowhere to be found on Globe's homepage which tells us this is still "unofficial". What's interesting is that…

Relevance: 69%      Posted on: May 18, 2009

I have been getting inquiries from people asking about the peer to peer issues with their Globe DSL. Today, Globe Telecom has issued a formal explanation regarding the issue. See details below: These are information that are being disseminated to all CSRs to be relayed to customers when they inquire about the alleged bandwidth capping. What is Peer-to-Peer (P2P) P2P is a file sharing mechanism that allows files to be swapped directly between users' computers instead of having the file first stored on a server between them. An example of a P2P application is BitTorrent. What is our official message…
