Satellite Internet on the Island costs Php9k

One of my biggest problems when going on vacation in one of the smaller islands in Palawan is lack of internet connectivity. The one we’re staying right now (Coral Bay, Coron) doesn’t even have electricity 24/7 and we’re only able to charge our gadgets in the evening (6pm to 6am).

ZTE MF60 HSPA+ Pocket WiFi Review

We featured this HSPA+ capable mobile hotspot from ZTE a few weeks ago and we’ve finally gotten a review unit to test. Like many other pocket WiFi (MiFi) devices before it, the ZTE MF60 is one pretty kick-ass unit. If only it were more affordable.

Nokia’s debut on the netbook market was met with a lot of excitement. Being the number one mobile handset maker in the world, it’s pretty interesting how they’d implement their very own netbook with the Nokia Booklet 3G.

Why telcos prefer time-based charging on 3G?

If you survey various telcos around the globe, you will notice that all of them offer packet-based charging for 3G or Ev-DO. Only in the Philippines you’d get time-based charging. And the reason why?

SmartBro 3G on its way to HSDPA 3.6Mbps?

With the purchase of PLDT/Smart of CURE, the company now has a wider band for its 3G network. With the largest spectrum of 15MHz, Smart already uses the 1920-1935MHz and the 2010-2025MHz band. The additional frequencies from CURE would practically double its capacity and pave the way for higher 3G speeds.

Globe caps Visibility users to 5GB a month

The other day, we had a meeting with a Globe executive to finalize details of an upcoming project (that’s for another story though). During our meeting, I stirred our discussion to some juicy stories and they were candid enough to share some information (which I believe is bloggable since I wasn’t asked to sign an NDA *hehehe*).

I was told that new Globe Visibility users will be capped at 5GB of usage per month. The current monthly service fee for their mobile broadband solution (3G/HSDPA) is still at Php2,000 plus some activation fee. The cap is now included in the fine print but the existing subscribers will retain the eat-all-you can feature (unlimited).

Still suffering from ISP dis-connectivity

Over at PTB, Arnold is taking a spot survey from readers on the status of their ISP’s connectivity. For my end, it’s still spotty. There will be times that the speeds are decent (though not at par with normal) and there will be times that it’s totally useless to go online.

I have PLDT myDSL which is the worst hit. Surprisingly though, Smart Bro seems to be doing much better than expected.

So, I went out and tried several AirborneAccess hotspots but couldn’t login. Then I discovered that my free account from them already expired last December 31. Time to use that Globe WiZ backup but none is in sight.

Again, Smart 3G/GPRS saves the day. It’s not really that fast but feels better than dial-up (97kbps via 2Wire).

How’s everybody else’s connection nowadays?

Testing Smart GPRS on the road to Vigan

We head out to Vigan around 2AM this morning. I brought my car, asked my cousins to drive for me so my brother tagged along. I thought that if I had to spend this whole week in some place like Vigan, might as well make the most out of it.

Just before we left, I was checking the AirborneAccess website if they have any available hotspots in the historical city. Unfotunately, there was none, but I just remembered that Arnold posted his life-saving day by Smart 3G the other day. So I borrowed my cousin’s N6680 to try it out with my laptop. The settings would not work for the N6680 but when I tried my N3230, it worked!

Smart 3G

While on the road, I hooked up my laptop to my mobile phone and tested out Smart GPRS. Took me a while to be connected and when I was able to login, the pages load real slow, I couldn’t logon to Yahoo Messenger and I can’t view cPanel/WHM. Not a big problem but a little inconvenient especially when you want to check on your server that’s been cranking up in the past few days.

Anyway, my connection spoeed was just around 40Kbps and the pages are crawling. Even GMail is having a hard time loading.

Still, it’s way better than nothing at all. And for Php10 per 30 minutes, it’s a bargain.
