Hello ‘Windows’: Microsoft to wipe out ‘Nokia’ and ‘Windows Phone’ brands

Relevance: 100%      Posted on: September 16, 2014

UPDATED Sept. 19, 2014: With the release of new mobile handsets running on Windows 8.1 such as the Cherry Mobile Alpha Luxe and Play and the HTC One (M8), one can notice that they refer to the new gizmos as Windows, sans the Phone from the branding. This seems to be the case for the Redmond giant, as a leaked official internal document details the company's plans to not only remove the 'Windows Phone' branding on all partner manufacturer handsets, but as well as the 'Nokia' branding on their now-owned mobile phones, keeping the 'Lumia' as their primary brand alive.…

Nokia was reported to be planning to launch a Windows Phone flagship codenamed EOS which will use the same PureView technology found on the Nokia 808 PureView. According to The Verge's sources, the Nokia EOS will be the "true PureView Windows Phone" and will use a large sensor similar to the one powering the Nokia 808. Like the previously reported Lumia 920 successor - the Nokia Catwalk, the Nokia EOS will also be clad in aluminum rather than polycarbonate as statement of its flagship status. No further details have surfaced but the Nokia EOS is expected to debut this year.…

Did Microsoft just screw Nokia with Windows Phone 8?

Relevance: 92%      Posted on: June 21, 2012

The earlier announcement of the Windows Phone 8 received mixed reactions. One -- that it's time for MS to add those features WP7 should have had in the first place and; two -- that all existing WP7 handsets will not be upgraded to WP8. In the middle of it all is Nokia which just released their new line of Lumia WP7 smartphones. Usually, with major mobile OS upgrades, entry-level to mid-range smartphones are normally bypassed on the updates (mainly due to hardware support). However, Microsoft's final decision that all WP7 handsets are not getting a taste of WP8 will send…

Is Nokia going Android or Windows Phone 7?

Relevance: 88%      Posted on: February 9, 2011

If the recently leaked memo of Nokia CEO Stephen Elop shows some tell-tale signs of platform shifts for Nokia, they might just jump and take on other mobile OSes. The two most likely targets are Windows Phone 7 and Android. Nokia's Symbian is losing grounds in almost all levels -- even the 2-year old Google Android has surpassed their shipment numbers in 2010. So, in order for Nokia to compete more aggressively, it has to let go of Symbian's monopoly over their handsets. Meego will not cut it (too late already). Nokia could go and use Windows Phone 7 with…
