Why mandatory unlocked phones ain’t happening here?

The recent report of Chile implementing the mandatory unlocking of all phones that are sold in the country this month got me thinking if this is possible in the Philippines. Of course it’s possible but I doubt it will be happening anytime soon.

How to unlock SIM Card PUK PIN codes?

The mobile SIM card comes with a PUK (Personal Unblocking Key) code or PIN (personal identification number). The main purpose of these codes is to provide a security.

These codes are normally used to prevent your SIM card from unauthorized use, theft or loss. The PUK is enclosed in a machine-generated security paper. Make sure to take care in storing this paper as it will be your only copy.

More ways to make money online

Over at Web Worker Daily, Anne Zelenka writes about 10 New Ways to Make Money Online. Some of the items she mentioned have already been around for sometime while others have become too saturated as well.

I’m now thinking of ways to make money online that’s more relevant to our region (or specifically in the Philippines):

  • Buy & Sell items in TipidPC. I look at TipidPC as somewhat like the eBay for the Philippines, even before eBay.ph came into the scene.
  • Work as a Proxy Player. Some games require you to play a certain amount of time before you reach a level or number of points. I have been told by a friend that these players (students and office workers alike) would pay other people just to continue their game play (proxy-play) while they’re away. Rates go as low as Php20 per hour and the player also pays for the net cafe rent. Others do it from home too.
  • Sell mobile wallpapers and ringtones. The telcos and CPs have already dominated this space but as an individual with talents, time and enough resources, this can be done. Here’s how I would do it. Create all your original mobile wallpapers and ringtones from scratch. Set up a small website to upload screenshots or demos of the products you created. Setup an SMS server on your PC (software costs as low as Php5,000 and all you need is a mobile phone and the cable). Start receiving request for downloads and get paid via Smart Money or Globe G Cash.
  • Proxy blogger. I know some network bloggers are doing this. They have too many blogs to write for that they could not maximize their output for a day. So, if they’re being paid $5 per post, they would look for someone else to blog for them and pay them $2 or $3. They reach their daily quota and they still get a cut.

Lots of other niche industries not yet tapped around here.

A look back at YugaTech in 2006

I’m combing thru 798 posts on Yugatech for the year 2006 and here are some notable stuff I’d like to share.

2006: The Year of the Scandals?

I don’t know about you but some of the scandals that rocked the Philippine blogosphere may have been fueled by this blog. :D

And who could forget the first and only true rant I made this year: Some people just don’t get Problogging. It’s always the one where you least expected it.

The Year of the Blog Trainer

This is probably the most exciting part of my year. Aside from being a fulltime problogger and netrepreneur, I accidentally became a trainer (well, at least that what’s printed in my contracts). That, coupled with trips both local and abroad (from Legazpi, to Vigan all the way to Taiwan, Pakistan & Indonesia) really caught my fancy. I’m looking forward to more travels to many more places next year.

The Seven Figure Blogger

When I celebrated my 1st year into fulltime problogging last month, I didn’t realized how far I’ve move along. Although a lot of my fellow Filipino probloggers already knew about this, and I know Darren Rowse got tons of press for doing so, I couldn’t really spell it quite well. Yup, seven digits but only in Philippine peso. I’m still too far behind hitting that 6-figure dollar mark.

It’s been fulfilling and my original plan of just testing how fulltime problogging goes in the Philippine setting has been proven viable — the car, slr camera, laptops and all sorts of stuff are just icing on the cake. It’s all about doing what you love most and making a living out of it.

2006 is the Year of Blog Events

I almost forgot how many blogger events we did this year but the most notable ones are the Globe sponsored BlogCon back in September and the Christmas meetup we did this December.

We’re hoping for more meetups, summits, blogcons and beercons in 2007. Don’t worry as we’re cooking up a post New Year Party next month.

MSM gets Blogging in 2006

This is one of the more notable developments in the main stream media involving the blogosphere. More and more blogs are becoming a source for news and feature stories. ANC did a series of blogger interviews in their Mornings @ ANC while ABS CBN and GMA 7 have put up blogs, albeit haphazardly, for most of their popular TV shows. It’s a start though.

And if the number of citations in my press page is any indication that traditional media in the Philippines is closely monitoring the blogosphere, then we’re almost there.

Blog Marketing is Hot

Based on the number of direct advertisers, invitations, request for reviews, sponsorships and meetings we’ve had in the last 12 months, blog marketing is certainly in. Nothing beats targeted market and demographics couple with virtual word of mouth. “Today’s market niches are no longer geographic, but psychographic“, as Mike Abundo puts it.

Another year to look forward to…

We’re just getting started and we all have our own stories to tell on how blogging has affected us personally, professionally and psychologically.

So, what’s your blogging story for 2006?

Dear Sun Cellular

An old friend asked me to post this on my blog, hoping Sun Cellular would listen and read:

Opening a New Sun Cellular Account

To Whom It May Concern:

Last 18MAR06 I applied for a new Sun Cellular account. I have passed
the necessary requirements as stated in your website.

1. Completely filled-up application form.

2. Valid ID – SSS ID.

3. A. Proof of Billing

– Electricity Bill
– Water Bill

I live in a condominium where the electric and water bills do not bear
the names Meralco or MWSS.

B. Proof of Income – Form 2316 and last 2 payslips.

I vividly remember the lady attending my application informing me to expect 2-3 days processing time. Great!

After 1 week I receive a call requesting for additional statements. Recalling that the statements I provided (water and electricity bills) might not be acceptable, I decided to forward my last 2 credit card statements. I intentionally crossed out my credit card numbers.

Today (28 of March ’06) I receive a call informing me to submit another creditcard statement with my credit card numbers revealed. I will do no such thing and I demand a valid explanation. Anybody in their right mind will not disclose their credit card information to anyone who already has one’s personal information.

I believe I have submitted the necessary requirements. Either you approve my application or not, I don’t really care anymore. I’m no longer excited.

This will definitely fall on deaf ears. Prove me wrong by giving me a response. You know how to reach me.

Regards,
Chester Cheng
