Huawei E5 “Pocket Mifi” Review

There was a time when mobile Internet was considered a luxury service. It was only limited to corporate executives who needs mobile Internet to access Outlook emails and SharePoint files. Globe’s Visibility and Smart WeRoam were still uber expensive and you’re locked with a contract. Prepaid 3G or even EDGE connection is non-existent.

How to unlock SIM Card PUK PIN codes?

The mobile SIM card comes with a PUK (Personal Unblocking Key) code or PIN (personal identification number). The main purpose of these codes is to provide a security.

These codes are normally used to prevent your SIM card from unauthorized use, theft or loss. The PUK is enclosed in a machine-generated security paper. Make sure to take care in storing this paper as it will be your only copy.

End of week round-up

Been a little busy with so many other things since I came back from vacation which made posting on this blog a little slower than usual. However, stories still abound:

Here’s a short note from a SitePoint newsletter: According to ContentBiz, one of MarketingSherpa’s publications, Google paid out $1 billion to Adsense publishers last year.

SIM Registration & Phone Number Portability

With the prevalent incidents of phone scams, it brings to mind the lobbying of certain sectors to require SIM registration for pre-paid users. A SIM, or subscriber identity module, for prepaid phone users are, up to now, completely anonymous allowing phone scams go unchecked and hard to trace because of this anonymity.

While post-paid subscribers are required strict compliance to documents for identity verification, prepaid users go unchecked. And a huge chunk of the subscriber base of these telecom companies (Globe Telecoms, Smart Communications & Sun Cellular) are using prepaid SIMs. With the registration comes similar benefits like that of post-paid subscribers — the ability to re-claim your phone number in case it got lost or the SIM card is damaged. Very important to people like me who has gathered hundreds of contacts over the years.

Malaysia has already initiated steps for SIM registration. When do we start with ours?

On the same note, Inq7.net published a story today about Congress gathering feedback from the public with regards to Phone Number Portability. I am not sure how they are doing it but perchance they bump into my blog any one of these days, I’d like to share/add some points:

  • Phone Number Portability allows for convenient switching between mobile providers because subscribers need not change their numbers and inform their contacts about it.
  • No more buying of new SIMs or SIM swap promotions just to trick people into switching providers.
  • Avoid subscriber-padding. I’m sure these telecoms are just counting the number of SIMs sold and not the actual number of people using them.

I would only imagine why them telcos are so opposed to it, raising technical and operational issues. I’d say it’s more of an economic concern for them.

P.S. Incidentally, my entry at Pinoy.Tech.Blog today is about my “Nokia 3230, up close and personal“.

Week-end AfterMath

Got back from a short trip to Baguio. Yes, it was raining most of the time but that did not prevent us to take a well-guided tour of the city — Mines View, The Good Shepherd, Burnham Park, Ibay’s Silver, Wagwagan Central, The Grotto, and the strawberry farm. (Pictures will be posted tonight.)

Unfortunately, my phone got yanked. Of all the places in the world, SM Baguio, while we’re doing an early morning shopping for personal stuffs. Must have been fished out from my jacket pocket. Just bought that phone last May. Darn. All of my 400+ contacts are there, lost to oblivion. Double darn.

Those contacts are priceless.

Okay, moving on… I’m getting anew one, preferrably post-paid. :)
