How online ad rates are quantified?

A question was sent to me yesterday asking how rates are quantified in online advertising, including variables which may affect it. I believe this type questions are better addressed by internet marketers.

The truth about Inq7.net

Joey Alarilla wrote a piece on “The truth about INQ7.net…” which explains what has happened to the site Inq7.net and what will happen to the new Inquirer.net.

That, after some months of speculations (and denials), a praise release, and an obvious re-alignment of articles (with the occasional incidents of infinite domain redirections). Nice to really hear it from the horse’s mouth this time.

It almost completely answered the what but none of the why. So, now that it has been put on record, we can safely say that the Inquirer group took the better half of the deal. Here’s what I think why:

  • The Inquirer team has always been on the driver’s seat while GMA7 has been at the back-seat all these 5 or 6 years of partnership.
  • GMA 7′s Php100 million investment for the joint project ended up producing the No. 1 site in the country.
  • All existing advertisers at Inq7.net were all moved to Inquirer.net. I don’t see the same ads displaying on GMANews.tv. Not sure how the sales team and the ad revenues were split though but I suppose it would have been cut into half as well.
  • All organic search engine results with the domain inq7.net on it re-directs to Inquirer.net. See sample search results here.
  • Inquirer.net still (somewhat) inherits the Inq7.net brand.

In the end, Inquirer.net only lost the Inq7.net brand domain but all the other perks are still intact esp. the most critical one — advertising.

So, the challenge is on for the best Philippine news sites — the more players and content providers there are, the better for us the reading public. May the one with best original and relevant content wins.

Taking the Philippine Blogosphere Offline

That’s our tag line for our blog parteeh which will be tomorrow. I never really got to explain that one until yesterday while I was having coffee with the editorial team of GMA 7 (News & Public Affairs). As they’ve graciously invited me to drop by their station and introduce me to the team involved in their blog network and the new GMANews.tv portal, I decided to stay for a while (if you can call 5 hours a coffee break) and discuss my ideas and plans for a solid blogging community in the Philippines as well as get their side of the story on the recent break-up on the Inq7.net project. I don’t know if I did promise them I won’t tackle the issue anymore here on my blog as it’s already done and been dealt with although I said it would be nice if the online reading public would know the whole meat of the story.

Ok, going back to the party. This event is a landmark for me to show to the rest of the local IT industry that there IS a community and it’s not just virtual but a real one you can meet and greet. The event tomorrow will be the proof of that — organized by bloggers for bloggers. As of last count, we have over 100+ attendees (though only around 80 are bloggers as we have to give slots to sponsors, speakers, etc.)

The overwhelming support that we have from the sponsors and donors who selfishly sent in their contributions is unbelievable. What I am most proud of is the amount of effort the members of the Steering Committee put into this project. If it were not for them, this event wouldn’t even be possible. Some of them are even the first ones who pledged money for the party. Huge, huge props to the team.

So, well see y’all there tomorrow!

P.S.
I’m hoping to win that iPod Video too! *hahaha*

A media giant’s SEO challenge

Now that we’re witnessing the final phase of the transition from Inq7.net to GMANews.tv and Inquirer.net, both will be facing some setbacks as they move along and away from each other. I’m sure a new layout will unfold over at Inq7.net which will divide the real estate space equally between the two media entities.

PDI & GMA 7 inks new deal for INQ7.net?

This was in the news yesterday — Philippine Daily Inquirer, GMA Network launch ‘new INQ7.net’. I previous wrote about an impending split-up by a tip from multiple sources. Now, this comes as a total surprise for me.

Starting January 2007, INQ7.net will become a news portal or “doorway” to the Philippine Daily Inquirer and GMA Network news websites, top executives of both media giants announced in a brief event held at the GMA Network headquarters in Quezon City.

What I don’t really get from this deal is that there’s almost nothing new. It says Inq7.net will serve as portal for both Inquirer.net and GMANews.tv website.

Here’s what I think the story is all about, and please allow me to venture another guess:

GMA 7 Network and the Philippine Daily Inquirer did in fact split up. GMA Network will deliver its own content and will now host the streaming videos (which Inq7.net is now doing). The Philippine Daily Inquirer will run Inquirer.net, which they used to do before the tie-up years ago. The statement that Inq7.net will serve as a portal may mean that all content headlines will appear on Inq7′s website but the links will either forward it to Inquirer.net or GMANews.tv whoever owns that article or news.

The idea of sharing the brand (Inq7.net) and the real estate seems logical to me IF the two would have to go separate ways.

But again, this is just another theory (after I read the article 3 times). We’ll see come January 2007.

Anybody noticed the inquirer.net transition?

I blogged about the rumored break-up of Inq7.net from media partner GMA 7 almost 2 months ago. You can read more about it here.

So, I noticed earlier today that some of the sections of Inq7.net are now resolving to inquirer.net already. See sample screenshot below:

Inquirer

You can actually see this now if you go to the section via the left navigation tabs. The screenshot here shows the Technology section as http://technology.inquirer.net

I might have overlooked this but I’m pretty sure this domain transfer was very recent. Again, I might be wrong still it’s a bit sneaky to inject the new domain there, eh?

This clue adds up to the whispers about the breakup. It could happen anytime soon.

GMA 7 to split from Inq7.net partnership?

Network giant GMA 7 and Inquirer Publications joined in a content partnership some 7 years ago to launch the new company and news site Inq7.net. Yesterday, while I was pitching ideas for an netrepreneurship awareness campaign and awards of some sort, I was told that GMA 7 is planning to remove its interests in Inq7.net (was that a fifty-fifty split?).

So I asked my reliable source “why?” When, after 7 years in the online media and having been profitable in the last 2 years, GMA 7 wants out?

The answer to me was, “maybe they want to compete?

I guess so.

Nonetheless, I think Inq7 will do just as fine.

Update: I just got someone from the inside confirming this story. It was already mentioned to the employees but no details. It could be due to issues on content or profit, we can only guess.

Alexa vs. Netcraft

In one of my old entries about “Top Philippine News Sites“, I was discussing with Marites Johns of newsBalita about the effectivity of Netcraft and Alexa in ranking website popularity.

From my quick search on Google, all I get is that both Alexa and Netcraft uses their own proprietary browser-installed toolbars to measure surfing activities.

Since there are no exact number of toolbars installed for each of them, we can’t really tell which is more reliable.

However, I think we can verify this by comparing both rankings agaist the site’s published traffic.

Under Netcraft, we have the top 6 below:

1. Sun.Star – 2,518
2. Daily Inquirer/GMA – 3,320
3. newsBALITA – 4,989
4. Philippine Star – 5,580
5. ABS-CBN – 10,029
6. Manila Bulletin – 11,549

With Alexa, we get another set:

1. Daily Inquirer/GMA – 3,179
2. Philippine Star – 8,645
3. Manila Bulletin – 21,670
4. ABS-CBN – 22,247
5. Sun.Star – 38,562
6. Abante Tonite – 46,993

From what I know, Inq7.net should lead the pack with a total monthly pageviews of 41 Million. Marites adds that newsBalita gets 2 Million pageviews/month. Maybe Max will share how many pageviews Sun.Star gets.

Again, I will go back with another info about MySpace having more pageviews than Google. In that list, Yahoo leads the pack at 43.7 Billion pageviews and Alexa correctly ranks it at #1 while Netcraft puts it at #2. Google is #2 on Alexa but #1 on Netcraft. While both Netcraft and Alexa was not close to Google’s actual ranking in terms of pageviews, Netcraft overly underrated MySpace to #85 as compared to Alexa’s #8.

From the figures above we can tell that Alexa is more accurate in predicting rankings. Yes, both may be unreliable but both have a good sample size (in the millions) of the total population.

For a global perspective check out State of the News Media for 2006.

Top Philippine News Sites

Max points to a link to a recent Netcraft results ranking the top 20 Philippine News sites. Here’s the list of new websites:

  1. Sun.Star – 2,518
  2. Daily Inquirer/GMA – 3,320
  3. newsBALITA – 4,989
  4. Philippine Star – 5,580
  5. ABS-CBN – 10,029
  6. Manila Bulletin – 11,549
  7. Manila Times – 16,680
  8. Malaya – 25,746
  9. Philippine News Agency – 49,368
  10. Journal Group – 56,801
  11. Daily Tribune – 82,215
  12. Manila Standard – 83,102
  13. Philippine Headline News – 96,046
  14. Abante – 120,524
  15. Abante Tonite – 143,651
  16. Newsbreak Online – 216,768
  17. Business World – 267,385
  18. Minda News – 342,468
  19. Cyberdyaro – 398,530
  20. Bulalat – 738,857

The rankings are based on stats gathered by Netcraft’s toolbar. I’m comparing the rankings to Alexa results here:

  1. Daily Inquirer/GMA – 3,179
  2. Philippine Star – 8,645
  3. Manila Bulletin – 21,670
  4. ABS-CBN – 22,247
  5. Sun.Star – 38,562
  6. Abante Tonite – 46,993
  7. Abante – 74,233
  8. Malaya – 79,466
  9. Philippine Headline News – 94,166
  10. Daily Tribune – 107,270
  11. Manila Times – 132,966
  12. Journal Group – 133,637
  13. Manila Standard – 146,640
  14. newsBALITA – 191,510
  15. Philippine News Agency – 228,362
  16. Bulalat – 306,493
  17. Cyberdyaro – 415,192
  18. Minda News – 548,457
  19. Business World – 627,055
  20. Newsbreak Online – (same as Inq7.net)

Big difference there. Alexa also gets its traffic rankings from the Alexa toolbar so it all boils down to which of the two is widely used.

The Philippine President has a blog!

Hoping to keep her constituents updated about her activities, Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, daughter of former Philippine President Diosdado Macapagal, has also opened her own blog as well.

Her blog, http://kgma.wordpress.com, also contains links to her official website, and links to speeches, initiatives and accomplishments she has made as sitting president of the Republic of the Philippines.

Apparently, GMA heard about the news in Inq7.net about Mar Roxas joining the blogosphere. Not to be outdone, the president could have asked someone to blog for her as well. The blog is not her official website though.

I believe Inq7.net will surely digg this story as well. This is big! :D hehehe

See, this kind of crappy reporting about blogs will get you nowhere. If you define joining the blogosphere as something similar to what Inq7.net is putting out there, I bet the UN Secretary and US Pres. Bush will have their own un-official blogs as well. If you say that Mar Roxas joins the blogosphere, then it should be Mar Roxas who blogs not somebody else (even in his behalf). No offense to Janet Torral who started the blog but I learned about it last week when the blog was submitted in Pinoy Top Blogs and wanted to blog about it only to be disappointed that it wasn’t really Mar Roxas who’s blogging.

The Philippines According to Blogs

Blogging is slowly becoming a popular alternative to mainstream media. Even mainstream media has already recognized blogging as a tool for gathering news while others even use blog entries to quote interviews in their news articles. The social phenomenon that is blogging has already made a significant change on how information is disseminated thru the internet.

Before we begin to examine the usual signs how blogging has crept into the arena of mainstream media, we need to understand what blogging is and how it came about.

A blog is a condensed term for weblog, commonly used to describe web sites that maintain an ongoing chronicle of information. Blogs range from the personal, technical, informational to the political, and can focus on one specific subject matter or a whole range of subjects.
Many blogs focus on a particular topic, such as “web design”, “politics”, “sports”, or “mobile technology”. Some are more eclectic, presenting links to all nature of other sites. And others are more like personal journals, presenting someone’s daily life and thoughts which most of them started off first.
Blogs have been around almost as internet was introduced in the Philippines in the early parts of 1995. During those times, the early bloggers didn’t have a name for what they were doing besides calling it a personal website or an online journal.

Back then, if you want to have your own blog, you’d have to learn the basics of HTML and a little bit of the technical aspects like FTP (File Transfer Protocol). Besides that, when one has to publish or update their site, it was done manually – editing the pages, adding links and pictures and then uploading the affected files or webpages. It was a tedious and time-consuming effort, added to that the scarcity of internet connectivity, updating a website or blog takes a great deal of effort and patience. Thus, the frequency of updates was scarce and nowhere near with what we enjoy today. Now, there are blogging tools and services which allow almost anyone who has internet connection to create their own blog in a matter of minutes.

Blogging became so phenomenal because of its viral effect – linking other related blogs, pointing to online sources and digging deep into the issue with a personal touch. It has democratized people thru the internet and allowed regular folks to express their own thoughts and opinions without censor or editorial filters which all professional journalists have go to thru before getting published. In a way, blogging is instant news delivered with a touch of personal opinion.

Blogs will not depose mainstream media, rather it will add to it. News media, despite it’s inherent credibility is still more often than not, bland and too objective. What blogs offer is a taste of personalized news coupled with reader interaction – something which traditional media lack.

In the Philippines, blogging has just begun, yet we now have several prominent people who use blogging as a tool to reach their audience and to freely express themselves.

Comm. Dondi Mapa of the CICT could probably be the first high-ranking government official to put up a public blog (http://1mjobs.blogspot.com). His blog aims to reach the relevant sectors and the general public to the importance of CICT in in generating jobs. The blog allows direct interaction with the readers and Comm. Mapa likewise gets suggestions and comments direct from his readers and the general public.

There is also a blog entitled “Philippine Debt Management Issues” (http://lowerphildebt.blogspot.com) which was published by former Philippine Treasurer, Nina Lasala. Her blog was meant to server as an open forum for investors, fellow finance officers, and other interested parties to discuss the state of Philippine Debt Management.

One of the most popular Filipino blogs today is HouseonaHill.net (www.houseonahill.net) of Connie Veneracion, a retired lawyer now currently staying at home and working full time with her blogs. Her blog topics spread from photography to politics. She also runs a cooking blog at PinoyCook.net which has been popular with a lot of OFWs around the world.

Dean Francis Alfar, a seven time Carlos Palanca Awardee, also runs his own personal and literary blog called “Notes from the Peranut Gallery” (deanalfar.blogspot.com). Jim Paredes of the Apo Hiking Society has been blogging since November 2003. His blog is entitled “Writing on Air” (http://haringliwanag.pansitan.net/).

Former Inquirer columnist Dean Jorge Bacobo was the first Filipino journalist who started to blog (deanjorgebocobo.blogspot.com) though he has not been publishing anything on his blog for a while now. Joey Ararilla (http://babelmachine.blogspot.com/) of Inq7.net now holds that spot. Manuel L. Quezon III, also a columnist of Inquirer and curator of the Ayala Museum, also has a blog at www.quezon.ph/blog as well as technology columnist Chin Wong (hwww.info.com.ph/~chinwong/) of the Manila Standard (www.manilastandardonline.com).

Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) has also recently put up their very own blog at www.pcij.com/blog. For some months now, Inq7.net (www.inq7.net) has been maintaining a blog-hybrid on their news website, entitled “Talking Points”. They also ran a section featuring interviews with regular bloggers, YOU Blog Addict (http://you.inq7.net/gear/index.htm), and another one for HackenSlash (www.hackenslash.net/gameblog/), the game blog. Likewise, Manila Bulletin Online (www.mb.com.ph) also created a feature in their Technology section specifically for blogging and Filipino bloggers called “Blog-O-Rama”.

The blog portal “The Philippines According to Blogs” (www.pinoyblog.com) is a collaborative blog that aims to serve as a starting point for any Filipino blogger and even regular blog readers to explore the Philippine blogging scene. The PinoyBlog portal enables regular blog members to re-publish a short summary of their entries with links pointing back to their own blog site. Likewise, casual readers will only need to browse to one site, read the summaries and click on the entries which interest them. This blog aggregation service is what converges the bloggers and their readers in the portal which in turn creates the blog community.

Last May 7, 2005, the 1st Philippine Blog Summit (www.iblogph.org) was held at the NISMED Center of UP Diliman. Over 150 bloggers and blog enthusiasts attended the summit which was covered by news media GMA 7 and ABC 5. This event initiated the evangelization of blogging in all sectors of society. Prominent speakers and presentors at the summit included Comm. Dondi Mapa, Dean Alfar, the delegates from Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ).

Though blogging is still in it’s infancy in the Philippines, we may someday find more and more people, especially those from the government sector, to use weblogs as a tool to reach their constituents. Presidential candidates in the recent US elections have their own blogs that acts as a marketing tool and a portal to for their constituents during the election period. Who knows, maybe some time in the near future, the President of the Philippines will also have a blog of her own?
