Obama and the Call Center Industry

Relevance: 100%      Posted on: November 17, 2008

Since the election of Barack Obama as the next President of the United States, much talk has been going around about his policies and stand on outsourcing among call center employees. My discussions with several people working in the BPO and contact center companies have been mixed. I think he might have been misunderstood in his statements where he said he's going to take some of the outsource jobs back to America. What Obama might do is give some tax breaks or tax incentives for companies if they retain employees in the US. That way, US companies might be persuaded…

Only 3 of every 100 graduates pass Call Center jobs

Relevance: 88%      Posted on: May 14, 2006

Someone sent me a link to this old article from Manila Standard Today about me recent article on call center jobs in the Philippines. The article mentioned that only around 3 out of 100 fresh graduates in the country are hired by call centers. The survey must have been done in 2005, where only 11,526 applicants or 2.89 percent of the total 400,000 new graduates are accepted in BPO companies and call centers. However, the 3% mentioned here seemed misleading since there's no way all those 400,000 college graduates applied in a call center. That means the passing rate is…

Representative Terry Ridon of Kabataan Party list is hoping that third time’s the charm as he re-filed the House Bill 1180 or the BPO Workers’ Welfare and Protection Act of 2013 on Wednesday July 10. The said bill was first filed on the 14th Congress by former Kabataan party list Representative Raymond Palatino. After his first failed attempt, Mr. Palatino re-files it in 15th Congress but failed to even get passed the committee level. Now it’s up to current Representative Ridon to continue the fight. Philippine Call Centers under scrutiny from AT&T data breach

Relevance: 60%      Posted on: April 18, 2015

It's been reported that call centers in Philippines as well as those located in Columbia and Mexico are on AT&T’s watch list due to data breach that affects almost 280,000 US customers. The $25M settlement with AT&T Services was to "resolve an investigation into consumer privacy violations at AT&T’s call centers located in the said countries." This has been by far the largest privacy and data security enforcement action made by FCC or Federal Communications Commission. Call Center Focus also reports that the fine has already been implemented in other call center companies. Additionally, sources say Teleperformance in Mexico is…

Meet Amelia, the humanoid program that will soon replace call center agents

Relevance: 58%      Posted on: May 11, 2014

BPO companies may soon add another member to their workforce with the introduction of Amelia, a humanoid program that can answer phone calls and technical queries with human-like response. Developed by New York-based company IPsoft, Amelia is basically a software algorithm / virtual engineer that can answer phone calls and respond to technical questions in a fraction of time humans do. This is not Amelia, but soon... Amelia can work in ten languages, can provide basic infrastructure management support services, and has the ability to clone itself to handle peak-hour traffic. It can help BPO companies cut costs by as…

Is the Philippines really hot with Call Centers?

Relevance: 54%      Posted on: March 23, 2006

I'm seeing a lot of reports, news and all raves about the Philippines being the center of attention for the call center industry (or is that contact center?). But, is the Philippines the primary destination? Statistics would show we're not. Last week, reports came out that Apple will be opening up a tech support facility in Bangalore, India with an initial manpower of 1,500 and to double by the end of the year. Why Apple didn't pick the Philippines, I can only speculate. The early this week, Dell formally launched its office at the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay…

My Ta-Da Lists

Relevance: 51%      Posted on: December 9, 2005

With the lot of things and to do's that I'm missing, and my post it notes already falling off my PC monitor, I found a need for a useful and easy to use notepad/planner that I can access online. Ta-da List was the first one that came to my mind. I used to have one but I forgot my login so I created another. There are other alternatives which can also be integrated with my blog but I found Ta-da easier, cleaner and faster. Now, the next challenge is to fill up those lists with my regular to do's and…
