A look back at YugaTech in 2006

I’m combing thru 798 posts on Yugatech for the year 2006 and here are some notable stuff I’d like to share.

2006: The Year of the Scandals?

I don’t know about you but some of the scandals that rocked the Philippine blogosphere may have been fueled by this blog. :D

And who could forget the first and only true rant I made this year: Some people just don’t get Problogging. It’s always the one where you least expected it.

The Year of the Blog Trainer

This is probably the most exciting part of my year. Aside from being a fulltime problogger and netrepreneur, I accidentally became a trainer (well, at least that what’s printed in my contracts). That, coupled with trips both local and abroad (from Legazpi, to Vigan all the way to Taiwan, Pakistan & Indonesia) really caught my fancy. I’m looking forward to more travels to many more places next year.

The Seven Figure Blogger

When I celebrated my 1st year into fulltime problogging last month, I didn’t realized how far I’ve move along. Although a lot of my fellow Filipino probloggers already knew about this, and I know Darren Rowse got tons of press for doing so, I couldn’t really spell it quite well. Yup, seven digits but only in Philippine peso. I’m still too far behind hitting that 6-figure dollar mark.

It’s been fulfilling and my original plan of just testing how fulltime problogging goes in the Philippine setting has been proven viable — the car, slr camera, laptops and all sorts of stuff are just icing on the cake. It’s all about doing what you love most and making a living out of it.

2006 is the Year of Blog Events

I almost forgot how many blogger events we did this year but the most notable ones are the Globe sponsored BlogCon back in September and the Christmas meetup we did this December.

We’re hoping for more meetups, summits, blogcons and beercons in 2007. Don’t worry as we’re cooking up a post New Year Party next month.

MSM gets Blogging in 2006

This is one of the more notable developments in the main stream media involving the blogosphere. More and more blogs are becoming a source for news and feature stories. ANC did a series of blogger interviews in their Mornings @ ANC while ABS CBN and GMA 7 have put up blogs, albeit haphazardly, for most of their popular TV shows. It’s a start though.

And if the number of citations in my press page is any indication that traditional media in the Philippines is closely monitoring the blogosphere, then we’re almost there.

Blog Marketing is Hot

Based on the number of direct advertisers, invitations, request for reviews, sponsorships and meetings we’ve had in the last 12 months, blog marketing is certainly in. Nothing beats targeted market and demographics couple with virtual word of mouth. “Today’s market niches are no longer geographic, but psychographic“, as Mike Abundo puts it.

Another year to look forward to…

We’re just getting started and we all have our own stories to tell on how blogging has affected us personally, professionally and psychologically.

So, what’s your blogging story for 2006?

Thousand Bears for Bicol Project (TBB)

Please help by spreading the word or donating stuffed toys or bears for this cause: Thousand Bears for Bicol Project

Today we received our 300th bear :) I will post photos in my blog this evening and send you all an update. For now, I wish to thank everyone who has so far contributed to the campaign — A grade 5 boy from Ateneo de Manila whose mommy showed him the blog entry and so he was moved to donate 20 toy puppies (puppies are good too!) ; 20 bears from a friend of mine from HSBC Hongkong; another 20 bears from a dear friend who has always been supportive of our causes; another 20 from my good friend Andrea’s kids.

Andrea has also been able to hook us up with Operation Compassion in Legazpi, together, we will help oversee the distribution of the bears on a date very close to Christmas (either December 22 or 23). Our prayer now is to hold a little salo-salo for the kids (almost a thousand of them) perhaps in one of the evacuation centers.

All day yesterday, I was worried about how I would get all the bears (and other furry friends) to Bicol and today the Lord answered my prayers. Through the help of our home church, Greenhills Christian Fellowship under the auspices of our churchmate Brother Mike Asperin, we will be transporting all 1000 bears for free to Legazpi on a PAF plane! God is truly wonderful and provides ALL the time.

Filipino associations in Manitoba, Canada and Sacramento, California are also getting together to send over some bears. I am amazed at the power of His hand when it moves the hearts of people everywhere. Please continue to keep those bears coming as we are still quite far from our target of 1000. Kindly forward this email to those whom you think would be interested to help us out.

What do we need?

Teddy Bears – new or in good condition
or friendly looking and cuddly stuffed toys that can be hugged by the children

We are also accepting art materials – notebooks, pens, pencils and crayons that we can pack and give to the children. In addition to play therapy, art therapy is also a proven effective tool in helping heal the children.

Where can you drop off the materials?

Quezon City — 41 Milkyway Drive, Blue Ridge, Quezon City contact – 918-906-8852

Makati — The Room Upstairs, 2nd floor, LRI Building, Nicanor Garcia (formerly Reposo), Makati City tel no. 899-9318

Alabang – Room 306, Medical Arts Building, Asian Hospital (clinic of Dr. Noemi Guloy)

Can we have the bears picked-up?

Some companies and schools are doing “bear drives” so yes, we can pick up a minimum of 30 bears from your school or office.

A Thousand Bears for Bicol (TBB) is an exercise in watching the way God’s hand works and seeing how wonderful and awesome He is in His kindness and faithfulness towards all of us. God cares for all the little children and is especially loving of widows and orphans. I know that through you, He cares for His children in Bicol. I pray that you allow yourself to be His vessel of love and kindness.
Thank you once again for spreading the word and God bless you all this holiday season.

Blessings and teddybear hugs,
Cathy Babao

What is blogworthy and what is decent content?

I though the two terms above are somewhat related to each other so I’d like to discuss them here. The Ca t asks what makes an issue, news or topic blogworthy? This was in response to her plea to help spread Pyro’s case. I’d like to take the stand of some anonymous blogger and venture an answer or two to The Cat’s question:

  • First, blogworthiness is a relative term. One topic might be blogworthy for me but it might not be blogworthy to others.
  • Topic relevance. If I have a blog about travel, it would be a little awkward to have a post similar to what I did here. If the topic was relevant to travelling, it would make sense to post about it on the travel blog. Otherwise, it’s not blogworthy at all.
  • Too personal. Yup, some subjects are just too personal to blog about.
  • Blogger Relationships. A lot of bloggers have now formed close relationships on top of just being fellow bloggers online. Others become true friends, ninongs or ninangs, maybe even as significant others. Still the general populace of the blogosphere is still a little diluted in terms of personal relationships that a request like this might not strike favorably and be deemed not worth a space in their blog.

Then, there’s this “what’s in it for me” mentality everyone has (including me).

So, we move forward to what makes decent content and who determines if it’s decent or not? I was just chatting with Mikey and told him that one of the bloggers in their upcoming content network had mistaken me as the organizer (the entry has since then been edited). I wanted to correct the blogger right away but I thought the organizers of Dash Media were either doing this in stealth mode until I found the link of their email here.

First, let me clarify that I was never a part of Dash Media (and never will be, although we host the site on one of our servers). Second, I have been brewing a Filipino blog network of my own for the longest time (say December 2005?). We haven’t launched it yet due to logistical problems. In as far as marking it as the first Filipino blog network, Shai Coggins has already taken that spot a long time ago with her About Weblogs (which was consequently merged with b5media).

The vision of Dash Media is to become the 9rules of the Philippine Blogosphere, which is why they are filtering the good blogs from the not-so-decent ones. It’s like PinoyBlog for those who can write decent and have a decent design as well. I wouldn’t call it an elitist network as some of the western bloggers would refer to 9Rules but I’d like to stretch the discussion on where to draw the line between a decent blog and a noisy blog (noisy, being not decently written). You will notice I am using the word decent as this was the same term used by Dash Media to draw the line between a blog that’s worthy to be added to your Bloglines account and a blog that’s just plain boring and uninteresting.

I believe the regular Filipino blog reader is intelligent enough to know which is good content and which is not. This is the reason why most of us have RSS Feed readers — it serves as our personal filter to weed out the noise from the ever growing blogosphere. My other worry is that this could cause some sort division as to who has the better content.

Ok, I’ll stop here before people thinks this is another “my network versus your network” thing, which isn’t because I don’t have one yet. :D

AOL’s new Netscape is a Digg-killer?

The beta version of the new Netscape portal really looks like another Digg-clone. Techcrunch calls it “the massive digg-killer” noting that Netscape serves a whopping 811 million monthly page views – far more than Digg today. With that amount of existing traffic, Jason Calacanis (the head huncho for WeblogsINC and Netscape), is pretty excited that they could build something great with the so-called meta-journalism (or social journalism).

The main difference between the new Netscape and Digg is that the latter is 100% pure user-driven while Calacanis’ new one will have editors or moderators. This means that the news that gets on top of the frontpage are then followed-up by the paid meta-journalists by way of verification, interviews and further research. Basically, the users themselves will be the ones nominating which stories should be covered more.

Digg CEO Jay Adelson responds to Netscape challenge:

Finally, we are very proud of the fact that there have been thousands of clones of digg. Keep them coming! (Time Warner is the first billion dollar company to do it, but bring it on. Surprised they went for the look and feel too, though.)

Oh wait, any new social news and bookmarking site now becomes a clone of Digg? Besides, was Digg ever an original idea? Digg was just a mix and match of the best features of del.icio.us and Slashdot. At least at Netscape, any attack/criticism on their site still gets the frontpage. Last time I heard, any submissions to Digg that’s anti-Digg are buried to oblivion.

I like Digg, don’t get me wrong, but if the owners talk as if their ideas are original and any other group or individual trying to improve it by either cloning or innovating on the idea are just a mess isn’t a nice way to welcome a new player.

Om Malik goes fulltime Problogging

{Nope, not because he got fired or something.}

Valleywag leaked the story from an internal memo at Business 2.0:

Date: Thu, 8 Jun 2006 14:44:34 -0400
To: The Staff
Conversation: Om, Sweet Om
Subject: Om, Sweet Om

To: The staff

As many of you already know, Om Malik, after three years of writing about startups, Web 2.0, the GoogleNet and everything else, has decided to eat his own dog food. He’s accepted seed funding to turn his mega-popular blog, gigaom.com, into a real business.

When Om told me about his plan to start a company, I reacted predictably: I burst into tears, fell to the floor, clutched his ankles, and begged him not to go. This had nothing to do with Om having introduced me to the superior grilled lamb chops at Pakwan. I really like the dude.

Luckily, I was able to make him an offer he couldn’t refuse: Om will be staying on as a contributing editor, writing a monthly column for Business 2.0 that will start in September.

Watch this space for details of an upcoming pour celebrating Om’s, and our, good fortune.

JQ

This has forced OM to prematurely announce his transition. We can say that Om Malik has gone fulltime Problogging and his GigaOM Blog is only as big as Mike Arrington’s Techcrunch. :)

Props to micro-pubs. ;)
