PLDT upgrades to 7.2Mbps HSPA850

Relevance: 100%      Posted on: February 11, 2009

In a report from Business Mirror last Monday, PLDT president Napoleon Nazareno said they are upgrading their networks to a faster HSPA850 platform. This will enable PLDT (and Smart) to offer 3G speeds of up to 7.2Mbps. Smart Bro is currently promoting its 2Mbps network. The HSPA850 has starting rolling out this February in Metro Manila and could be spreading across major cities in the country in the next couple of months. The PLDT Group earmarked an investment of about $50 million (~Php2.35 billion) for the said HSPA technology. If those existing 3G USB dongles can support HSPA850, we should…

PLDT myDSL to go 2Mbps?

Relevance: 95%      Posted on: December 17, 2005

Just read this yesterday in the newspapers (was it manila Bulletin?) and there's an ad for PLDT DSL along with their promo for the Guild Wars. A copy of the full page ad can be found here and if you look closely (or maybe zoom in the image on the lower right corner), the connection speed for Plan 1995 is already at 768Kbps and for only Php3,000 per month, you can get as fast as 2Mbps. *sweet* At first I thought maybe PLDT has again upgraded the connections of existing broadband subscribers to adjust for this new scheme but I…

Cheapest internet in South-East Asia?

Relevance: 67%      Posted on: January 21, 2006

With PLDT's recent Super Saver Line promo, can the Philippines stand to claim the cheapest internet service in the whole of south-east asia? Bundled with a fixed landline, PLDT's Vibe promo comes out as low as Php160 per month (roughly $3/month). I'm not sure about broadband (Singapore & Hong Kong still rules the arena of big bandwidth pipes) though. Remember that just about 5 years ago, a DDU (dedicated dial-up) account could cost you as much as Php3,500 a month. At that price now, you can hook up with PLDT or Globe and get as much as 2Mbps of broadband…

Manny Pacquiao knocks out PLDT WatchPad

Relevance: 66%      Posted on: November 15, 2009

My brother kept on begging me for a week to set up PLDT WatchPad on the laptop so we can hook it up on the LCD TV for the Manny Pacquiao vs. Miguel Cotto fight today. Being on a 2Mbps Plan 1995, I thought the PLDT WatchPad might be a bearable option to watch the big fight. PLDT was also promoting WatchPad a lot and promised subscribers can watch the Pacquiao-Cotto fight for free. I was scheduled to fly back from out of town around that time so I shrugged off the possibility of seeing the fight live. Fortunately, our…

Put internet in your ordinary TV with PLDT TVolution

Relevance: 64%      Posted on: February 13, 2014

In line with PLDT’s vision of a “Connected Home”, the MVP-owned telco launched an add-on service called TVolution which turns a subscriber’s regular idiot box into a powerful gateway to tons of contents on demand through the PLDT HOME Fibr connection. TVolution refers to both the service and small peculiar device (as seen below) that makes it possible. The device, which is officially coined as the MediaQ M310, is manufactured by Huawei and pairs to your TV via HDMI. Seeing and holding the Huawei M310 for the first time, we were impressed by how Huawei was able to fit everything…

Free PLDT DSL upgrades this January

Relevance: 62%      Posted on: January 5, 2006

My PLDT myDSL line went kaput just around lunch today and was only able to re-connect just now. One thing I learned about PLDT's customer support is that they don't have one or you can't get to talk to one. What I'd do is call sales and inquire about upgrading my DSL bandwidth or ask for any new promos. Then, I'll segue into asking if they could connect me to their support personnel at the NOC. Works almost all the time. Anyway, going back to the DSL upgrades, the customer rep did confirm that PLDT will be doing another round…

Got home this evening to find pamphlets at my doorstep from Globe. Apparently they are now offering broadband connections to residential areas with speeds of up to 2Mbps. Sweet. Sun Cellular caps 2Mbps 3G to 650Kbps

Relevance: 61%      Posted on: August 7, 2009

Several readers sent in reports that Sun Cellular is allegedly capping their 2Mbps unlimited 3G internet (Sun Wireless Broadband) to just 640Kbps. While this bandwidth capping has not been official confirmed, a number SWB users have been sharing bandwidth results from their experience that there's indeed some sort of capping going on (using Mobile Data Monitoring Application). The Sun Wireles Broadband (SWB) unlimited service has a monthly service fee of Php799 (the cheapest 3G internet service in the Philippines) for unlimited 3G internet within Metro Manila. Sun Cellular promises speeds of up to 2Mbps on their 3.5G network. Consumer reports…
