How to Increase Your WiFi Signal

Relevance: 100%      Posted on: September 12, 2007

Whenever I'm on trips and billeted in wifi-enabled hotels, I still always end up on a floor where the signal is poor or non-existent. Either I go down to the lobby to get some good reception or position really close to the glass windows hoping to sniff a bar or two of wifi signal. Little did I realize I can actually increase the wifi signal using stuff commonly found around the house. See this YouTube video for a short demo: Hat tip to Mark Erickson of Infinite Solutions for this neat trick. I think the LAN cable and the 3G…

Relevance: 98%      Posted on: September 2, 2014

That is probably a question a lot of people ask when installing a new WiFi router at home. The answer was provided by Jason Cole in this rather highly mathematical (more like physics actually) demonstration in his own apartment. By positioning the WiFi router at an optimal location, we could get a better reception. Jason Cole shows us how does that look like in this model.2 This area mapping provides a more visual display of how signal strength is affected by obstructions or interference and signal refraction. If only we could also have a simple tool such as this to…

Steve Jobs said all smartphones have this problem -- hold it in a certain way and your phone signal goes down. Was curious so I wanted to try this one several of the phones I have here - the Galaxy S, Xperia X10 and Desire. So I tried holding these 3 phones in every possible way to see if I could somehow affect the signal strength. Fortunately, all the 3 Android phones have this built-in "Signal Strength" monitor which is measured in -dBm (an abbreviation for the power ratio in decibels). If you have an Android phone, you can see…

Nokia by Microsoft” might replace Nokia branding

Relevance: 88%      Posted on: July 9, 2014

Since Microsoft bought Nokia some time ago, a lot of people have been asking - what will happen to Nokia? Well, apparently new images of an alleged Lumia 830 show that the device is still branded by Nokia, but it has "by Microsoft" next to it now. Same font is to be found here, and thankfully, Microsoft doesn't shove its name onto your face with the labeling. If this is all true, then we won't probably see anything called Microsoft Mobile for now - and it definitely can't be called just Nokia as that's not part of the purchase. What do…
