Samsung Galaxy Y vs. Netphone 701

Relevance: 100%      Posted on: October 4, 2011

A lot of people are asking me why the Netphone 701 (ZTE Blade) is more expensive than the Samsung Galaxy Y Netphone Edition. So I looked a little closer and wondered the same. Here's a quick comparison to give you a better overview of the two Netphone variants. Aside from the fact that the Samsung Galaxy Y is the newer handset (released October 2011) compared to the Netphone 701 (released October 2010 as ZTE Blade), the latter is twice as expensive as the former. Here's a comparative chart of the two: The big advantage of the Netphone 701 over the…

Samsung Galaxy Y gets the Netphone treatment

Relevance: 91%      Posted on: October 2, 2011

Smart Communications has just added a new phone to their Netphone line-up. It's an entry-level Android phone by the name of Samsung Galaxy Y with a cheaper price tag of only Php5,990 for the prepaid kit. What's interesting though is that instead of using the Netphone naming system (something like the Netphone 501 or maybe a Netphone 303 -- this is just an example), they just used the original name given by Samsung. Most likely reason is that Samsung has a good reputation with Android handsets and it will sell more if they stick with it rather than using the…

Smart Netphone 701 now at Php4,999

Relevance: 71%      Posted on: January 27, 2012

Smart's flagship Netphone unit, the Netphone 701, is now on fire sale at just Php4,999, almost half the original price of Php9,990. The Netphone 701 is the first and only Netphone-branded handset that Smart carried when they promoted the SmartNet ecosystem. Since then (September 2011), they did release any new device with the Netphone brand. Instead, they came out with Netphone Edition handsets like the Galaxy Y and Desire S. The Samsung Galaxy Y, with its suggested retail price of Php5,990, became a very popular handset especially with the Smart Plan 349. The unit was so in demand that most…

Globe CloudFone vs. Smart Netphone

Relevance: 68%      Posted on: September 22, 2011

A lot of people that heard about Globe's Cloudfone had the impression that it was developed to compete with Smart Netphone. Well, I think that's as believable as the idea that Globe got the Samsung Galaxy S2 to compete with the Smart Netphone 701. Ok, let's pretend for a moment that the Cloudfone Ice was a direct competitor to the Smart Netphone 701. Globe's ad somehow gives us a hint in that direction (the strategic naming of the phone is also a giveaway). Let's look at the hardware specs and see which handset is better (funny how Huawei and ZTE…

The next Smart Netphone handset could be a Huawei

Relevance: 68%      Posted on: March 15, 2012

After Smart released the very first Netphone handset last year (i.e. Netphone 701), they have not followed that with another one except for a couple of Netphone Editions like the Galaxy Y. We wonder if Smart will still introduce new ones and from our past interviews, they've promised they will. It's pretty obvious that the Samsung Galaxy Y Netphone Edition was a blockbuster and sold hundreds of thousands. The retail price of around Php6,000 was a sweet spot (especially with Smart Plan 349) that even retail stores have even increased the selling price to Php7,000 due to the huge demand.…

There you go — no need to buy a Smart Netphone

Relevance: 63%      Posted on: October 3, 2011

Smart has just revealed its very first Netphone Edition smartphone -- retaining the original name of the Samsung Galaxy Y complete with the Netphone suite of apps. It's a curious move considering they actually had the un-released and cheaper Netphone 501 hanging since Mobile World Congress back in February. From the looks of it, the Netphone 501 (another ZTE handset) is supposed to be the cheaper variant of the Netphone line-up and should have been launched together with the Netphone 701 many weeks back. Why Smart did not release that cheaper Android phone is unknown but by the fact that…

Globe outs Samsung Galaxy Y PowerSurf Edition

Relevance: 62%      Posted on: October 10, 2011

If Smart has the Galaxy Y Netphone Edition, Globe is also introducing the Samsung Galaxy Y PowerSurf Edition which comes free with Plan 499. Just saw this ad from one of the dailies today -- it features both the CloudFone Temptation and the Samsung Galaxy Y with Globe PowerSurf 299 which offers 300MB of data plan for 30 days. Both the Galaxy Y and the CloudFone Temptation are free on Plan 499. Globe earlier introduced the CloudFone Ice to compete with the Netphone. No mention as to the prepaid kit price of the Galaxy Y or the Temptation.

Two new dual-SIM smartphones were recently launched by Samsung -- the Galaxy S Duos and the Galaxy Y Duos Lite (also known as the Galaxy S Duos S7562 and Galaxy Pocket Duos S5302 in international markets). For starters, the Galaxy S Duos has a 4-inch WVGA TFT display with 233 ppi pixel density and is powered by a 1 GHz ARM Cortex-A5 processor with a Adreno 200 GPU under the hood. It features a Smart Dual SIM function which allows both SIM cards to be active at the same time. It supports 3G and HSPA but won't allow two data…

Samsung To Release Galaxy S6 & S6 Edge Ironman Edition

In line with the recent premiere of the Avengers: Age of Ultron in South Korea, Samsung has announced that its planning to release a special edition Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge with an Ironman-inspired paintjob in the next coming weeks. The announcement came straight from the head of Samsung Marketing Lee Young-Hee. However, the picture you see above is just a mock-up made by an artist named Classico, and may not possibly be the final look of the Ironman-inspired Samsung Galaxy S6. Lee didn’t disclose a lot of information about how the Galaxy S6 Ironman Edition will look like…
