Tonight, I bought a Nokia phone. It’s the 5th handset I bought this year. The decision wasn’t biggie since the price point is way below my usual budget. Besides, the unit wasn’t something I’d normally look into. In fact, it was a surprise buy.
If you’ve wondered what happened to the digital mobile TV market in the Philippines, it’s basically back to the drawing board. In April 2010, Smart MyTV service was suspended indefinitely, three years after it launched and operated without earning a dime.
According to the latest stats from Admob, the Nokia N70 still tops as the top handset used to connect to the web in the Philippines. This despite the fact that the model has already been discontinued for distribution.
Of course it’s a knock-off but the sales ladies will tell you this upfront — “Sir, it’s a China phone”. I replied back “But the real Nokia phones are also made in China!”. Just take a look at this fake Ferrari-inspired Nokia N79++ TV.

That’s better than going for pay-per-view or going to cinemas at the mall. If only Smart was able to get the mobile TV policies approved earlier, they would have made bonus points in this arena.
