Download Opera Mini for free.

Opera takes the Free way.

Relevance: 72%      Posted on: September 24, 2005

Opera made the big bold move this week by offering their $29-dollar browser (version 8.5) for free. As of today, there are about 1.6 Million downloads already. It was a bit of a surprise why Opera would take the free model, but it was high time I guess. There have been reports that Opera had made a deal with Google and other big sites (like Amazon I guess) for delivering ads which is set to replace their $30 Million revenue from selling the browsers. Yup, they do have buyers -- 100,000 shelling out $30 annually. Not much but it's still…

Google buying Opera doesn’t make sense.

Relevance: 65%      Posted on: December 16, 2005

The Search Engine Journal says Google Opera Acquisition Rumor Makes Sense. I'm looking at it the other way around. First, if and when Google buys Opera, what will it do with its strong partnership with Mozilla (i.e. Firefox)? I guess Google will end up alienating those who are using Firefox and loving the Google Toolbar in it. Besides, their Firefox/Google Toolbar referral program is a strong indication that their support is with Mozilla. Then, they've hired Firefox developers left and right (and I think still looking for some more). Well, they did strike a deal with Opera before (which Om…

There's story spreading that Facebook is interested to buy Opera browser to create its own custom "social" browser and compete with the likes of Google, Apple and Microsoft. It's been revealed that one of Facebook's biggest challenges is in mobile (one reason why they bought Instagram), the odds are stacked against it compared to in the desktop arena.
