Paypal Exchange Rates: Bank or Credit Card?

Relevance: 100%      Posted on: February 17, 2008

This was a question I've been very curious to know ever since Paypal allowed direct withdrawals to local banks and via credit card. This week-end, my CC bills arrived so I'm able to compute the going exchange rates for both withdrawal methods. I made two 500-dollar withdrawals direct to my HSBC credit card on January 24 and February 12, 2008. The bank exchange rates for those dates are Php41.16 and Php40.77, respectively. The exchange rate that appeared on my CC bill were Php40.42 and Php39.88, respectively. That's an average of Php0.815 difference for the two transactions. Note: When withdrawing Paypal

Paypal Users get Seller Reputation Status

One of the basic security features of Paypal is the Seller Reputation Status and Philippine Paypal users are now provided with one. Seller Reputation The Seller Reputation Number measures how many Verified PayPal members have paid that seller. New transactions are added 30 days after they occur, to ensure that the Reputation Number reflects successful exchanges. In essence, the higher the Seller Reputation Number of a Paypal user, the more trusted their account is. It could be considered as some sort of a trust rating. This feature will become very useful as more and more Filipinos use Paypal as a…

Full Paypal Support in 2007

Dustin Cheng reports in his blog that eBay promised full Paypal functionality in the Philippines by 2007. Another interesting query came from another eBay veteran who suggested that since PayPal is coming next year ( YES! eBay & PayPal promised that full PayPal support is coming in 2007!!! YEY!), why don't they come out with a PayPal Prepaid system that would definitely be embraced by the prepaid loving Filipinos. Kudos! I missed this event last November because I was too busy then and totally forgot all about it. The Paypal issue is actually the main reason I wanted to go…

How to get Paypal in the Philippines

Sign up for Paypal in the Philippines! Someone emailed me today asking some advice about Paypal. He wanted to ask how to sign-up for Paypal even if he's in the Philippines. Paypal will tell you -- you can't. Yuga will tell you -- technically, you still can. I call it proxy registration. If you have a relative or a friend who lives in a Paypal approved country. You can ask them to use your email account to sign-up with PayPal for you. They will also need to have a bank account to tie up the Paypal account and be verified.…

Why the uber-restricted launch of Paypal Philippines?

Relevance: 91%      Posted on: October 17, 2006

A lot of people were ecstatic with the news that Paypal has now added the Philippines on its list of supported countries. However, the inclusion was far from what we're expecting. It's even far from a half-baked launch. The limited Paypal access only allows users from the Philippines to sign up for a Paypal account and add their US-accepted credit cards to top up their account. That means one can only send money and it has to come thru your credit card -- that's it. You can't even transfer from a bank account so if you don't have any credit…

Scary Paypal Lockdowns

Just a few months after Paypal made huge waves in the Philippines, there's already a horror story in our midst. Paypal lockdowns -- yup, unexplained Paypal account cancellation without refund. One of the well-known Pinoy bloggers around emailed me about the recent demise of his Paypal account. For no apparent reason, all his funds have been frozen -- the $750+ amount was reduced to zero (nil, ziltch, nada)! With no explanation whatsover. (Can't name the blogger as of the moment. He's still filing an appeal.) The only possible reason for this lockdown would have been an unverified account. That could…

Is Paypal blocked in the Philippines?

Relevance: 90%      Posted on: November 27, 2005

I only noticed this a couple of days ago when a good friend of mine was visiting me here. He was chatting with his mom who's in Canada over YM. While talking about the possibility of opening a Paypal account for her from Canada, he fired up a browser and was going to guide his mom thru the sign-up process. Alas, the Paypal website does not load up. I did a ping and traceroute but got nothing still. Paypal is up, that I am sure of but it seems they've blocked access from IPs originating in the Philippines, or maybe…

Was full Paypal support a lot of help?

Relevance: 87%      Posted on: January 8, 2008

Months before Paypal legitimately opened its doors in the Philippines, there was much discussion on how the service could help a lot of Filipinos locally and abroad. It wasn't the de facto money remittance of choice (even until now) for OFWs but it may have paved the way for more online transactions for Filipinos. So, let me bring the question up again. Has Paypal actually made a significant change in the way you transact online? Did it allow people who did not use (or do not have access to) credit cards able to purchase online? Did it increase the volume…
