Rainy Day Friday Round-up

Been raining all week, floods all over and two out-of-town trips canceled. Still, if anyone is interested in some offline action, join us in our weekly badminton games at WestDrive Badminton at Brgy. Kapitolyo, Pasig. That’s every Thursday starting 9PM ’til midnight. Play-all-you-can for only Php75. Just tell the reception it’s under Bimbo’s name in the reservation list.

I’ve been meaning to write some more local stuff but ended up deleting 3 separate drafts. Will just point you to some of the brewing discussions elsewhere…

MacDells: Serving OS X on a PC

What better way for Apple to gain more Mac switchers, increase its market share, and earn more revenues than by licensing the OS X? Makes sense, IMO. Besides, Apple seems to be slowly embracing Windows.

David Berlind of ZDNet thinks so too:

The most widely read Tech Mag in the Philippines?

I used to buy a lot of tech magazines before (last year) but lately I noticed I’m not too excited to grab one from the magazine store anymore.

So, here’s a question that once popped out of nowhere during one of our regular meet-up sessions: What’s the most widely read Tech Mag in the Philippines?

Frankly, I have no idea then. I can name the ones I used to read and often see on the newsstands.

Guess what the answer was:

PC Magazine Philippines

Would you agreed? Well, PC Magazine has the brand and recognition almost worldwide so it does make sense. What Tech Mags you usually read?

P.S.
I have two articles printed on this October-November issue of PC Mag Philippines — one about blog monetization and the other on Paypal vs. Google Checkout.

When Old Media goes New Media

When Jayvee approached me to collaborate with them (as a consultant) on building up Hinge Inquirer’s blog network, I was surprised that traditional publications are looking into new media as a path to expanding their readership and brand.

After several months and with the help of uber WP theme designer Gail, I’m allowed ready to disclose my participation with HIP and their 6 new blogs:

I used to do the themes but Gail took over around the middle of the project. I have a 2-year contract with them — hosting the sites, tweaking and some SEO jobs. In exchange, I get a percentage of the revenues from monetization. Hopefully, the payback will be good. :D

Contributing to Mobile Philippines Mag

I’ve been invited to contribute to the newly reformatted Mobile Philippine Mag and review some gadgets. I’ve always wanted to write for magazines or review some gears and gadgets. I thought that by blogging, I could hone my writing/communication skills and maybe one day be able write this off my top 100 things to do before I retire. :D I guess blogging did get me this gig.

My first assignment is this gear: the Oakley Thump.

Oakley Thump

Watch out for it on the November issue of Mobile Philippines. ;)

Btw, my other feature article on PC Magazine Philippines was pushed to the October issue. It should be out anytime now though.

Contributing for PC Mag Philippines

I’ve been asked by the guys at PC Magazine Philippines to write a couple of articles on problogging and blog monetization. I’ll be joining the ranks of fellow bloggers like Migs, William, Gary and Mike though I think they are regular contributors already.

Writing a 1200-word article seemed a bit harder than doing four 300-word blog posts, so I’m putting more time with this one to be more thorough. Haven’t finished yet but I’m halfway there.

If you (a Filipino problogger) want to be included in the write-up and it’s okay to quote how much your earn from your problogging gigs, drop me a line.

If you have an extra hundred bucks, do grab a copy of PC Mag Philippines on it’s August issue to read my article.

This is my first time, so be gentle. :)
