YugaTech expands coverage to Showbiz, Politics, Sports

Relevance: 100%      Posted on: April 1, 2013

YugaTech has been covering most of the local and global tech scene for the past 8 years and we believe it is time to expand our news to other categories like sports, showbiz, entertainment, politics and everything else that trends on Twitter. Since last year, we've already beefed up our news and reviews team. The editorial team is now at 4, including 2 full time contributors and one part-time correspondent. We are currently looking to expand this team to about 10 contributors in the next 6 months. The new bloggers will be a diverse mix of folks who are familiar…

Why ShowBiz Blogs rule the Pinoy Blogosphere

Relevance: 94%      Posted on: November 7, 2005

Divergent Poles decided (about 2 weeks ago) that he will no longer post entertainment topics on his blog and has been a bit disappointed that political blogs have fallen off the Top 10 in PinoyTopBlogs. As os today, only the Sassy Lawyer's Houseonahill.net remains on the Top10 for political blogs. Jove, Max Limpag, PCIJ, and Manolo's blogs slipped off the rankings in the last couple of weeks. This tells me what Filipinos would rather read about in the blogosphere; Encantadia, Pinoy Big Brother, Ang Panday, etc. are on top of the list and one's rights to express oneself freely in…

PEP.PH all geared up

Relevance: 85%      Posted on: March 1, 2007

PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) has formally launched last night together with the 7th anniversary of Yes! Magazine. The showbiz portal looks really promising and has the basic features (forums, gallery, commenting) engaging enough to keep avid fans glued on their monitors. The operator of the site, GMA New Media, is really proud of this site (based on what Ms. Malou Mangahas relayed to me) and though they were not able to snag pep.com.ph (by Philippines Equity Partners Inc.), I'm sure there won't be any type-in problems there (I see they already got pep.net.ph too). What is more interesting is that…

Some of you Globe subscribers might have noticed this for several weeks now but I'd like to make a formal announcement here. YugaTech Mobile is now featured/listed on Globe's myGlobe Portal. The myGlobe Portal can be found at http://3g.myglobe.com.ph -- most Globe SIMs have links to this WAP portal. The portal also features the new branded Yahoo! oneSearch by Globe. The blog is listed under Mobile Websites -> Tech & Blogs. This Content Partnership Agreement was actually signed way back in July 2007 and was supposed to officially turn over by August 1. This includes several of my other blogs…

Accessing Smart Bro Portal on my laptop

Relevance: 75%      Posted on: May 20, 2006

I was with Ajay all evening last night at Starbucks Adriatico in Malate for some very confidential undercover project. :p Thinking that the Starbucks branch there had Airborne Access internet, I brought my laptop with me so we could do some online stuff. I was mistaken. However, there was this wifi access point available somewhere which my laptop detected. The name of the network suggested that it was from Meridian (or SmartBro) but I was surprised I was able to connect to the network. Surfing wasn't any good though as I could not get anything. A few re-connection tries later…

Why the scarcity of local IT news?

Relevance: 65%      Posted on: June 30, 2007

Mon Lizardo of Inquirer.net tells Aileen Apolo that there aren't really much IT news in the Philippines. She was basically "ranting about the lack of Philippine internet news. I read a lot of local tech blogs and news, but there are just aren't any stuff about local IT stuff. How come?" Though most tech bloggers and journalist alike would concur to this observation, I think I have a different angle to this. Let me give you a backgrounder. I bumped into an old friend while heading to the gym last night (Fitness First at The Fort, anyone?) and he told…

Digg 4 wants to be Twitter for News

Relevance: 63%      Posted on: August 27, 2010

The 4th version of Digg has been rolled out with several major changes in the design, front-page algorithm, and social components. The social news site has somehow transform into some sort of Twitter-like streaming of news and links. Since 2004, Digg has been a major source of breaking news and stories for me -- ranging from the oddest, funniest, and most informative collection of stories. However, thru the years, it has been invaded by power-users and power-groups that dominated majority of what comes out in the front-page. It somewhat lost it relevance so the 4th version of Digg is trying…

Searching Google News

Relevance: 60%      Posted on: December 28, 2006

I never realized that I'd get that much coverage after taking the helm at BlogHerald so imagine my surprise when I searched my name at Google News: Looks like BH is listed in Google News as news source. On the same page, I saw several mentions of me I didn't know about (except for the interview with the New York Times I had yesterday): The Day the Pixels Froze: When a Digital World Was Stopped by a Natural Disaster The New York Times December 28, 2006 Earthquake knocks Asia back to phone age, and beyond International Herald Tribune December 27,…
