Philippine Competition Act will open the market to new telco players

Relevance: 100%      Posted on: June 10, 2015

The Philippine Competition Act is finally done at the bicam level which means it's up for signing by the President to be enacted as a law. This is the longest running bill in Congress and the current landmark bill passed by the 16th Congress. It's been around since the 8th Congress (1990s). The Senate version, Senate Bill 2282, was sponsored by Sen. Paolo Benigno Aquino IV and unanimously approved (13-0) last December 2014. The Philippine Competition Act will make sure that no business entity would have an unfair advantage over its competitors so that consumers would enjoy the benefits of…

SMC plans to break telco duopoly in 2014

Relevance: 82%      Posted on: November 26, 2013

Despite of a few futile attempts by other companies in the past, Ramon Ang of San Miguel Corporation seems unfazed and tells Philippine Daily Inquirer that “there’s still room for a formidable third player” in the local telco industry. SMC’s current COO adds that such endeavor is already in the company’s pipeline for quite some time already, but has been pushed to the back seat in favor of other acquisition opportunities. Following that statement, SMC has formally issued a letter to the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) confirming the company’s plan of launching a mobile telecommunications business in 2014. Ang clarifies…

Why We Want a Third Telco Player

Relevance: 65%      Posted on: January 19, 2015

There are currently two major telcos in the Philippines right now. In the previous reports that we've shared, it's obvious that quite a number of subscribers aren't totally satisfied with the service that they're getting. In this article we list down a few points why we think there is a need for a third telco player in the Philippines. Let's first take a trip down memory lane. There used to be three major telecom players (PLDT/Smart, Globe, and Digital/Sun Cellular) between 2003 to 2011 and we saw how fierce the competition was. In 2011, PLDT bought majority stake of Digitel (Php74.1…

ABS-CBN looking to break the telco duopoly

Relevance: 60%      Posted on: May 30, 2013

The Lopez-led media conglomerate, ABS-CBN Corporation, has recently announced that it inked a Network Sharing Agreement with Globe Telecoms that will pave the way for the media company’s plan of being one of the key players in the local telecommunications industry. The Network Sharing Agreement that ABS-CBN and Globe recently signed allows the former to use Globe’s servers, towers and switches that would enable the media company to deliver traditional telco services such as SMS, voice calls and internet surfing. Poll: Is your telco really just a tweet away?

Relevance: 58%      Posted on: September 9, 2011

Having been a long-time subscriber on Globe and Smart for years, I was glad when they expanded their customer service to Facebook and Twitter. No more long waits and busy lines with phone calls and un-answered emails. Or so I thought. For the past several months, the Twitter channel has been the most valuable channel for me to reach out for support or just ask questions. So we now have @talk2globe, @smartcares and @suncelltweets operating almost 24/7 answering questions on Twitter. The channel gives us the feeling that they're now more reachable and we get the badly needed help in…

Philippine Podcast Central

Relevance: 55%      Posted on: November 22, 2005

Microwarehouse sponsors the Philippine Podcast Channel which features their top picks for the different podcast channels ranging from Gay Speak of Danton Remoto, technology magazine T3, lifestyle channel on Health and Fitness by Chinggay Andrada, politics by Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism, Twisted by Jessica Zafra and Halikinu Radio show from the Ateneo campus. Some of the other channels are derived from existing television talk shows (Mommy Talk, Digital Tour, etc.) which I doubt is a real podcast in the truest sense. What they could have done is stripped off the video and re-packaged the audio for download or via…

Telco points “Kill Switch” is device manufacturers’ responsibility

Relevance: 55%      Posted on: February 25, 2015

The recent issue on "Kill Switch" being pushed by the Department of Justice is aimed to protect security and privacy of mobile phone users. Globe has responded that the idea is a good one and has been in practice in the US. However, they point out that it's the primary duty of the phone manufacturers rather than the telcos. No more legislation is required for this kill switch measure to be implemented, according to Sec. de Lima. The "kill switch" serves as an emergency stop or safety mechanism to shut off devices and erase its memory from a distance in…

Casino charges NTC under telco’s payroll

Relevance: 55%      Posted on: June 26, 2011

Rep. Teddy Casino made a bold charge against NTC Commissioners that they may be under the payroll of telcos, citing that the Commission has not made any strong regulatory powers over the telcos for the longest time. Casino also referred to the on-going process where PLDT is finalizing its acquisition of Digitel, making the over-all market share between Smart and Sun Cellular over 70%. Of course, this is just merely allegations and the good congressman does not have any solid proof to back his claims. Still, these allegations will surely get a lot of support from consumers. NTC has been…
