We've already learned about Yahoo! PH's entire editorial team being given their walking papers a couple months back, leaving the website no original source of local content except syndicated stories from partner publishers. This week, global HQ made an announcement in a blog post that a number of services will also be shut down, including the Yahoo! Philippines website. Yahoo.com.ph now redirects to SG.yahoo.com Not long after the announcement, the Philippine homepage of Yahoo! PH is no longer active and being redirected to Yahoo! SG. Yahoo! Is a Google-Yahoo merger any better?

Relevance: 73%      Posted on: February 8, 2008

The hostile bid by Microsoft to buyout Yahoo for $44.6 billion has prompted a lot of wild speculations for other players, including the Valley giant Google. In essence, the big G is one of those who can afford to buy Yahoo but US anti-competitive laws will obviously not allow it. Let's just say for a moment that it's a viable exit option for Yahoo, what does Google stand to gain? In 2007, Yahoo had gross revenues of $6.969 billion with a net income of just $660 million. If Google pays $44.6 billion for it, that's 67.5x Yahoo's annual income or…

Yahoo! Meme Challenge and iPad Giveaway

Relevance: 71%      Posted on: April 20, 2010

Last week, I finally joined Yahoo! Meme, partly because of that iPad giveaway they were doing but primarily because I don't want some anonymous person taking the YugaTech brand name. I already learned that lesson the hard way with Twitter so I'm not about to repeat the same mistake with the growing network on Yahoo! Meme. Besides, I'm looking at it as some sort of personal blog of sorts (much like Tumblr). So Yahoo! is doing a Yahoo! Meme Challenge for users who submit the most popular, creative and original "meme". Aside from the weekly iPod Nano winners, they're giving…

Could Yahoo! Buzz get bigger than Digg?

Relevance: 70%      Posted on: August 22, 2008

While some would already say that Yahoo! Buzz has already proven itself to bring more massive amounts of traffic to publishers, this has only been felt by a select few. This week though, Yahoo! Buzz was opened to the public and it made a bigger promise Digg never accomplished. Ever since Digg went live it has become the primary source of breaking news and great content for a lot of people. However, the audience is skewed towards the west and male demographics (it started out with tech) -- a profile that made it famous but at the same time was…

Do you like the new Yahoo! look?

Relevance: 68%      Posted on: July 22, 2009

Yahoo! finally showed us their new portal re-design and this time, it's allowing users to somewhat customize the sections of the homepage. Parts of the homepage are now widgetized and users can add 3rd party apps. What I liked the most is the Favorites bar which shows a preview of what's inside the service (Twitter, Yahoo! Mail, Facebook, etc) just by hovering your mouse on the links. And oh, GMail is in there too! You can even add your own blog to the list. The reboot is only available for the global version at the moment. The Yahoo! Philippines homepage…

Another ones bites the dust -- this time it's Yahoo! Buzz. It's the 2nd blog-related service that Yahoo! axed this year. The Yahoo! Buzz blog has this short message post a couple of weeks ago. Yahoo! Buzz will be discontinued as of April 21, 2011. As of this date, you will be unable to access the Yahoo! Buzz site. This was a hard decision. However this will help us focus on our core strengths and new innovations. We appreciate your patronage. The Yahoo! Buzz Team Launched by Yahoo! back in August 2008, Buzz was supposed to copy what Digg was…
