PLDT WiFi Zone: Can paid public WiFi survive?

Relevance: 100%      Posted on: March 9, 2012

Yesterday, PLDT and Intel held a joint event to present a partnership for the PLDT WiFi Zone and the Intel-powered ultrabooks. They didn't really share anything concrete plans bewteen the two brands but it was an opporunity for me to ask a lingering question -- can paid public WiFi still survive in this time of cheap mobile internet and free public WiFi? The PLDT WiFi Zone was first introduced sometime in December with regional pocket launches in Cebu (during Sinulog) and in Baguio (during Penagbenga). PLDT WiFi Zone speed test. Prior to this, Smart Bro also offered a similar WiFi…

Hands-on: ZTE MF90 LTE Pocket WiFi

Relevance: 85%      Posted on: March 17, 2014

The successor to the ZTE MF80 pocket WiFi from 2 years ago is the new ZTE MF90 which is now an LTE modem as well. This new model was officially released last month by MSI-ECS. The previous model supported HSPA+ networks with speeds of up to 42Mbps (prior to that we had the ZTE MF60). During that time, telcos have already deployed their HSPA+ network and we were getting a good 10-12Mbps using the pocket WiFi. Having used the MF60 and the MF80, it would seem that ZTE does not have some sort of design signature in every pocket WiFi…

Smart now has their own version of a portable 3G+WiFi router they called SmartBro Pocket WiFi. This new product competes head-on with Globe MyFi launched back in July. The SmartBro Pocket WiFi is only available on a postpaid Plan 495 for 50 hours of 3G internet every month. You will also need to add another Php150 per month for the Pocket WiFi device for the next 24 month lock-in period (that makes Php645/month for 24 months). Giveway: Huawei E5151 Pocket WiFi

Relevance: 84%      Posted on: February 19, 2013

Last month, we featured Huawei's new pocket WiFi -- the E5151. The router supports up to 10 devices and has provisions for a LAN or ethernet port. While most people would scoff at the LAN port, it's actually very useful when you travel a lot and stay in hotels where they only have wired internet in the rooms (and I travel around a lot so this is what I often bring on trips). You can check out more about this device here. It's now available in stores with prices between Php3,500 to Php4,500. If you still can't afford one, we'll…

Huawei makes some of the most interesting little gadgets around and when I visited their booth at CommunicAsia yesterday, they've got a dozens of Pocket WiFi and USB sticks for all sorts of cellular network on display. There were so many pocket WiFi devices and its iteration so I didn't have to really check out every single one of them. The one above is the Huawei WiFi E589 which supports LTE, 3G and 2G connections with speeds up to 50Mbps. This one is the Huawei E398 which is an LTE USB dongle, similar to the one being used by Smart…

Huawei E5151 adds LAN port to Pocket WiFi

Relevance: 81%      Posted on: January 19, 2013

Huawei's newest iteration of their pocket WiFi is slightly different from the previous ones. The E5151 comes with a built-in LAN port just in case you want to hook it up to a wired line. In my previous foreign trips, I would always bring with me a Huawei pocket WiFi and a portable WiFi router (like this one). The pocket WiFi is for a local 3G SIM that I normally use to avoid data roaming charges while the portable WiFi router is the one I use to convert hotel wired internet to wireless. The Huawei E5151 solves that problem by…

AT&T Unite LTE Pocket WiFi while roaming in the US

Relevance: 81%      Posted on: January 11, 2014

Since I have a back to back event coverage here in the US (CES in Las Vegas and NAIAS in Detroit) my initial plan was to subscribe to the Globe-AT&T roaming promo which is $15 a day. However, I will be here for 10 days so that's going to be $150 at the very least. So I went to hunt for an alternative. When I was gadget shopping over at Fry's here in LV, I discovered this prepaid pocket WiFi from AT&T and asked about it. The LTE device costs $99, including the prepaid SIM card. I can then load…

Looks like an HSPA+ capable pocket WiFi is now available in the grey market -- we spotted one a week ago over at TPC, a ZTE MF60 4G, selling for Php7,500. The device works the same as the old portable WiFi devices, only that this model supports the new HSPA+ network from both Globe and Smart -- and as such has the possibility to reach the 10Mbps or 12Mbps downlink speeds of the telco.
