Why telcos can’t guarantee minimum 3G speeds?

During a press briefing with one of the local telcos last week, the question of minimum speed was again raised by one of the members of the media. NTC has also released a memorandum circular to that effect but I think the issue will continue to linger.

Internet Coverage over Internet Speed

Been in the boondocks for about a week now on a semi-vacation mode (and semi-retreat kind of way) so I’m not able to regularly publish new entries here. With a thousand miles away from mega Manila and a couple hundred more miles from the nearest city, my mountain resort hide-away is almost devoid of any internet coverage.

Philippines ranked #8 on Worldwide Porn Revenues

With about $1 billion in annual revenues, the Philippines is tied at No. 8 with Canada and Taiwan for the largest revenues from pornography in 2006. This is according to the Internet Pornography Statistics report by Jerry Ropelato of Top Ten Reviews. For a poor 3rd 2nd world country, that’s something, huh?

Internet Penetration in the Philippines

According to a friend of mine, ACNielsen doesn’t have any relevant internet-usage research studies in the Philippines. This is the same topic I brought up during the iBlog3 — no extensive public study has been made in recent years about internet penetration and online usage behavior in the country.

So, when the issue of Internet Usage in the Philippines was tackled, everyone had their own numbers to throw out. Some would say 20% while others maintain the slow growth rate of 12%. While digging a little deeper into this topic, I found several statistics and research studies from the Internet World Stats and here are some of the figures I found there:

Philippines estimated population: 87,236,532 (2006); 84,174,092 (2005); 78,181,900 (2000)

Internet Users (2000): 2,000,000 (source: ITU)

Internet Usage (2000): 2.6%

Internet Users (2005): 7,820,000 (source: C.I.Almanac)

Internet Usage (2005): 9.3%

While the latest data was taken at the end of 2005, the growth of internet users must have also increased by then. However, also bear in mind that the population is also growing so that percentage shouldn’t have been affected that much. Still, the internet usage growth rate from 2000 is 291%. If you extrapolate that, we could make an educated guess of 10.15 Million for 2007 or 11.6% penetration.

Compare that to neighboring countries such as Malaysia (47.8%), Hong Kong (68.2 %), Singapore (66.3%) and we’re way behind. Although there are others like Vietnam (17.5 %), Thailand (12.5%), China (10.4%) and Indonesia (4.5%) so we’re really not that far behind. *heh*

The day DRM died

EMI, in an unprecedented move, is offering all it’s digital songs DRM-free. TechCrunch reports Apple is gonna sell them for $1.29 per song.

Now, that’s a huge surprise though it may not really affect us here in the Philippines since iTunes was never available here but to the rest of the iTunes population, this day (April 2, 2007) marks the death of DRM.

Kudos to Steve Jobs for openly voicing his opinions against DRM earlier.

Blogging is a privilege, not a right

I wanted to write about this a long time ago but kept it off until today when I read several comments about the Phil. Blog Awards. Yes, blogging is a privilege. It is not for everybody. It is only for those who have internet access. It is only for those who have enough time on their hands. It is only for those who have something to write or say.

So, don’t be surprised to learn that the demographics of bloggers are the ones who can pay for DSL on their homes and offices or even that Visibility or PLDT WeRoam. Don’t be surprised that these bloggers are the ones who have enough time to write and bloghop instead of worrying about their 8-5 jobs (worse, look for a job) or studying for their final exams and do their homework.

If you join our online community at MotorcyclePhilippines.com and you happen to go to one of the EBs (eyeballs), you will realize that 99% of them have motorcycles. And yes, that does not represent the Philippine demographics (i.e. not 99% of the country have their own motorbikes). I co-own that site of close to 40,000 members and I don’t even have my own bike.

If you join a Photography club and 80% of the people who come to photo shoots have dSLRs, it doesn’t mean the 20% who have point-and-shoot cameras is the minority group in the entire country. In fact it’s the other way around — there are more point-and-shoot camera than dSLR owners in the Philippines.

So, if you go to events that require you to wear formal attires, don’t expect that people attending it is representative of any bigger sample population. The ones you might be expecting are still in school finishing their exams, or still at the office doing OTY (thank you overtime). The ones you will meet are the people who have enough time on their hands, the ones who have gas money, or the ones who can pay for a taxi cab. Go to our blog parteeh and you’ll see that the demographics of the people there are totally different from that of the blog awards.

More than half of the population in the Philippines are poor. My parents are poor. My brother didn’t finish college nor does he have a job to feed his 3 kids. That doesn’t mean I need to find a way for them to blog and be part of this online community. I can’t, because they have something more important to spend time on other than writing about their thoughts. I wish I could, but I have to fulfill my other responsibilities to them first.

Blogging is a privilege, it’s not a right. Do not equate it with your constitutional right to suffrage or to get a decent education (hell, not even everyone has had education). So don’t expect that the blogging population is in any way representative of the voting population.

What if the Digg crowd becomes cultural?

Now that Digg has expanded beyond the realms of Technology, geeks will not be the only ones who’ll dominate the community. With the introduction of major channels like Science, World & Business, Videos, Entertainment, Gaming and recently also Sports, we will slowly see the tide levelling with non-tech topics getting more and more exposure. Digg is trying not to alienate its grassroots population and has done so by making the Tech channel as the default front page.

With this expansion, I believe the community is now faced with more possibilities and a cultural twist is a potential scenario.

What if the Digg crowd becomes cultural? What if all Filipinos tag other fellow Filipinos as Digg Friends. Same with Indians and Singaporeans, and possibly Chinese and Koreans? These cultural group could be a force strong enough that they could practically influence what appears on the front page of Digg.

Tech is a universal topic and whatever country or culture you are from, there is a huge probability that you’ll be interested in a similar tech news as everyone else.

However, this may not be true in the field of Sports, Gaming and Entertainment. Ragnarok is huge in the Philippines but not in the US; Efren Bata Reyes is a legend in billiards and Manny Pacquiao is getting a lot of attention lately; Richard Gutierrez and Angel Locsin are hot items in the Entertainment industry as well as the Alyssa Alano “Keys Me” video.

What if we have enough Filipino Diggers that could catapult every story about these people into the Digg frontpage? Same could be true with other personalities in other Asian countries.

When that happens, we could be seeing a huge shift in the western make-up of social communities such as Digg. Brazilians have conquered Orkut and more than a 4th of Friendster users are Filipinos. What could prevent them from taking over Digg?
